Book GLIM 82 Proceedings of the International Conference on Generalised Linear Models

Download or read book GLIM 82 Proceedings of the International Conference on Generalised Linear Models written by R. Gilchrist and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Lecture Notes in Statistics consists of the published proceedings of the first international conference to be held on the topic of generalised linear models. This conference was held from 13 - 15 September 1982 at the Polytechnic of North London and marked an important stage in the development and expansion of the GLIM system. The range of the new system, tentatively named Prism, is here outlined by Bob Baker. Further sections of the volume are devoted to more detailed descriptions of the new facilities, including information on the two different numerical methods now available. Most of the data analyses in this volume are carried out using the GLIM system but this is, of course, not necessary. There are other ways of analysing generalised linear models and Peter Green here discusses the many attractive features of APL, including its ability to analyse generalised linear models. Later sections of the volume cover other invited and contributed papers on the theory and application of generalised linear models. Included amongst these is a paper by Murray Aitkin, proposing a unified approach to statistical modelling through direct likelihood inference, and a paper by Daryl Pregibon showing how GLIM can be programmed to carry out score tests. A paper by Joe Whittaker extends the recent discussion of the relationship between conditional independence and log-linear models and John Hinde considers the introduction of an independent random variable into a linear model to allow for unexplained variation in Poisson data.

Book The Analysis of Categorical Data Using GLIM

Download or read book The Analysis of Categorical Data Using GLIM written by James K. Lindsey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present text is the result of teaching a third year statistical course to undergraduate social science students. Besides their previous statistics courses, these students have had an introductory course in computer programming (FORTRAN, Pascal, or C) and courses in calculus and linear algebra, so that they may not be typical students of sociology. This course on the analysis of contingency tables has been given with all students in front of computer terminals, and, more recently, micro computers, working interactively with GLIM. Given the importance of the analysis of categorical data using log linear models within the overall body of models known as general linear models (GLMs) treated by GLIM, this book should be of interest to anyone, in any field, concerned with such applications. It should be suitable as a manual for applied statistics courses covering this subject. I assume that the reader has already a reasonably strong foundation in statistics, and specifically in dealing with the log-linearllogistic models. I also assume that he or of GLIM itself. In she has access to the GLIM manual and to an operational version other words, this book does not pretend to present either a complete introduction to the use of GLIM or an exposition of the statistical properties of log-linearllogistic models. For the former, I would recommend Healy (1988) and Aitkin et al (1989). Por the latter, many books already exist, of which I would especially recommend that of Pingleton (1984) in the present context.

Book Breakthroughs in Statistics

Download or read book Breakthroughs in Statistics written by Samuel Kotz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McCrimmon, having gotten Grierson's attention, continued: "A breakthrough, you say? If it's in economics, at least it can't be dangerous. Nothing like gene engineering, laser beams, sex hormones or international relations. That's where we don't want any breakthroughs. " (Galbraith, 1. K. (1990) A Tenured Profes sor, Houghton Mifflin; Boston. ) To judge astronomy] in this way a narrow utilitarian point of view] demon strates not only how poor we are, but also how small, narrow, and indolent our minds are; it shows a disposition always to calculate the payolTbefore the work, a cold heart and a lack of feeling for everything that is great and honors man. One can unfortunately not deny that such a mode of thinking is not uncommon in our age, and I am convinced that this is closely connected with the catastro phes which have befallen many countries in recent times; do not mistake me, I do not talk of the general lack of concern for science, but of the source from which all this has come, of the tendency to everywhere look out for one's advan tage and to relate everything to one's physical well-being, of the indilTerence towards great ideas, ofthe aversion to any elTort which derives from pure enthu siasm: I believe that such attitudes, if they prevail, can be decisive in catas trophes of the kind we have experienced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WILEY-INTERSCIENCE PAPERBACK SERIES The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. From the Reviews of Nonlinear Regression "A very good book and an important one in that it is likely to become a standard reference for all interested in nonlinear regression; and I would imagine that any statistician concerned with nonlinear regression would want a copy on his shelves." –The Statistician "Nonlinear Regression also includes a reference list of over 700 entries. The compilation of this material and cross-referencing of it is one of the most valuable aspects of the book. Nonlinear Regression can provide the researcher unfamiliar with a particular specialty area of nonlinear regression an introduction to that area of nonlinear regression and access to the appropriate references . . . Nonlinear Regression provides by far the broadest discussion of nonlinear regression models currently available and will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in understanding and using such models including the statistical researcher." –Mathematical Reviews

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a surge of interest in methods of analysing data that typically arise from surveys of various kinds of experiments in which the number of people, animals, places or objects occupying various categories are counted. In this textbook, first published in 1984, Dr Fingleton describes some techniques centred on the log-linear model from the perspective of the social, behavioural and environmental scientist.

Book Methodological Issues in AIDS Behavioral Research

Download or read book Methodological Issues in AIDS Behavioral Research written by David G. Ostrow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodological problems have hampered researchers' efforts to understand and control AIDS since the beginning of the epidemic. This practical book addresses these problems by using actual health research case studies to develop strategies regarding design and sampling, measurement, and analysis and modeling issues. Researchers working on both biological and behavioral aspects of the disease will find this work a singularly effective tool to improve their study designs.
