Book excerpt: "A fast-paced spy thriller with enough twists and turns to keep readers entertained." - Publishers Weekly Red Sparrow meets One of Us Is Lying in this action-packed, romance-filled YA debut about a girl trying to outrun her past. Ninety-four countries. Thirty-one schools. Two bullets. Now it's over . . . or so she thinks. Sophia Hepworth has spent her life all over the world--moving quickly, never staying in one place for too long. She knows to always look over her shoulder, to be able to fight to survive at a moment's notice. She has trained to be ready for anything. Except this. Suddenly it's over. Now Sophia is expected to attend high school in a sleepy Montana town. She is told to forget the past, but she's haunted by it. As hard as she tries to be like her new friends and live a normal life, she can't shake the feeling that this new normal won't last. Then comes strong and silent Aksel, whose skills match Sophia's, and who seems to know more about her than he's letting on . . . What if everything Sophia thought she knew about her past is a lie? Cinematic and breathtaking, Tiffany Rosenhan's debut stars a fierce heroine who will risk everything to save the life she has built for herself.

Book The Girl From Nowhere

Download or read book The Girl From Nowhere written by Eliska Tanzer and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My mother was a prostitute. My grandmother and great-grandmother were prostitutes. Maybe I should have given the family business a chance. To Westerners, being Romani means being wild, romantic and free. To Eliska Tanzer, it means being rented out to dance for older men. It means living without running water. It means not being allowed a job or an education. It means being stuffed into a bare room with all your aunts and cousins, fighting over the thin, stained blanket the way you fight over the last piece of half-mouldy bread. It means joining the family prostitution ring when you’re still a child. But Eliska is given a way out after her mother scrapes together the money to smuggle her out of the country to a new life. Arriving in England in a washing-machine box, she thinks she has made it. But as a young girl alone in a new country, Eliska soon sees her dream turn into a nightmare when she is forced to live and work under unbearable abuse as she tries to forge her way alone. Drawing on the struggles of her Romani ancestors, Eliska is inspired with the strength to carry on. She eventually starts a successful business and becomes an accomplished writer and dancer. The Girl from Nowhere is a triumphant story of family, persistence and the meaning of freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since entering the performance lexicon in the 1970s, the term Live Art has been used to describe a diverse but interrelated array of performance practices and approaches. This volume offers a contextual and critical introduction to the scene of contemporary Live Art in Britain. Focusing on key artists whose prolific body of work has been vital to the development of contemporary practice, this collection studies the landscape of Live Art in the UK today and illuminates its origins, as well as particular concerns and aesthetics. The introduction to the volume situates Live Art in relation to other areas of artistic practice and explores the form as a British phenomenon. It considers questions of cultural specificity, financial and institutional support, and social engagement, by tracing the work and impact of key organizations on the UK scene: the Live Art Development Agency, SPILL Festival of Performance and Compass Live Art. Across three sections, leading scholars offer case studies exploring the practice of key artists Tim Etchells, Marisa Carnesky, Marcia Farquhar, Franko B, Martin O'Brien, Oreet Ashery, David Hoyle, Jordan McKenzie, and Cosey Fanni Tutti.

Each entry includes a detailed biography, covering both personal and professional milestones and a complete Western filmography. Book excerpt: When Carole Lombard was tragically killed in a plane crash on January 16, 1942, she was 33 years old and had been a film actress for almost 20 years, yet her best work probably still lay ahead. She had reached a career high point, earning praise for her talents as a comedienne as well as a dramatic actress. As well liked as she was on screen, she was equally popular off screen, known for being witty, uninhibited and a great party-giver. Blonde and beautiful, she reigned as the queen of Hollywood when she married Clark Gable, its king. This book offers a thorough examination of her too-short life and provides information about her 78 films, including cast and credits, synopses, reviews and comments. Photographs from her life and films complete the work.

Book Poverty Row Studios 1929 1940

Download or read book Poverty Row Studios 1929 1940 written by Michael R. Pitts and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-17 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of the sound era until the end of the 1930s, independent movie-making thrived. Many of the independent studios were headquartered in a section of Hollywood called "Poverty Row." Here the independents made movies on the cheap, usually at rented facilities where shooting was limited to only a few days. From Allied Pictures Corporation to Willis Kent Production, 55 Poverty Row Studios are given histories in this book. Some of the studios, such as Diversion Pictures and Cresent Pictures, came into existence for the sole purpose of releasing movies by established stars. Others, for example J.D. Kendis, were early exploitation filmmakers under the guise of sex education. The histories include critical commentary on the studio's output and a filmography of all titles released from 1929 through 1940.
