IRREPARABLE HARM Skillful plotting, surprising twists, and a cracking pace keep readers turning the pages in this gripping legal thriller. Downloaded by more than two million readers! Attorney Sasha McCandless has one goal: Make partner at the best firm in town. Then a plum assignment plunges her into a world of deceit and danger. She's tapped to defend an airline when a commercial flight crashes, killing everyone aboard. It's her big chance—high-stakes litigation for an important client. But, as she digs into the evidence, people close to the case start to die. When she discovers the crash was intentional, she teams up with a federal air marshal to prevent another disaster. Soon, Sasha finds herself with a brand-new life goal: Stop a madman before he kills her. INADVERTENT DISCLOSURE Tiny dynamo Sasha McCandless returns in the acclaimed follow-up to Irreparable Harm! It was supposed to be a routine discovery motion. It wasn't. When Sasha travels to rural Clear Brook County for a discovery argument, the judge appoints her counsel to an angry senior citizen facing a competency hearing. Then she's attacked by a group of environmental activists who mistake her for an oil and gas industry executive. Fracking of the Marcellus Shale has left the community bitterly divided and mistrustful of outsiders. She's eager for her appointment to end so she can leave for good. Then the town's only judge is murdered, and she can't walk away. Instead, she races to find the killer against a backdrop of secrets, backroom deals, and corruption, as the town threatens to fracture beyond repair. IRRETRIEVABLY BROKEN “Till death do us part” takes on gruesome significance in Irretrievably Broken. Prescott & Talbott is reeling from the murder of partner Ellen Mortenson—allegedly at the hands of her estranged husband—when a photograph of the dead woman is delivered to the law firm, her face Xed out and "ONE DOWN" scrawled across the bottom. Within days, a second partner is murdered, her husband also accused. Sasha doesn't practice criminal defense, but her former firm asks her to represent Ellen’s husband. Owing Prescott a favor, she takes the case despite her misgivings. Soon she’s representing both of the so-called Lady Lawyer Killers. The long hours take a toll on her own nascent relationship. That’s the least of Sasha’s troubles, though. The real killer is waging a vendetta for a past case gone wrong—and there's one more lawyer on his list.

Download or read book Outlaws in Medieval and Early Modern England written by John C. Appleby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With some notable exceptions, the subject of outlawry in medieval and early-modern English history has attracted relatively little scholarly attention. This volume helps to address this significant gap in scholarship, and encourage further study of the subject, by presenting a series of new studies, based on original research, that address significant features of outlawry and criminality over an extensive period of time. The volume casts important light on, and raises provocative questions about, the definition, ambiguity, variety, causes, function, adaptability, impact and representation of outlawry during this period. It also helps to illuminate social and governmental attitudes and responses to outlawry and criminality, which involved the interests of both church and state. From different perspectives, the contributions to the volume address the complex relationships between outlaws, the societies in which they lived, the law and secular and ecclesiastical authorities, and, in doing so, reveal much about the strengths and limitations of the developing state in England. In terms of its breadth and the compelling interest of its subject matter, the volume will appeal to a wide audience of social, legal, political and cultural historians.

Download or read book Sir Humphrey Gilbert and the Elizabethan Expedition written by Nathan J. Probasco and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the 1583 voyage of Sir Humphrey Gilbert to North America. This was England's first attempt at colonization beyond the British Isles, yet it has not been subject to thorough scholarly analysis for more than 70 years. An exhaustive examination of the voyage reveals the complexity and preparedness of this and similar early modern colonizing expeditions. Prominent Elizabethans assisted Gilbert by researching and investing in his expedition: the Printing Revolution was critical to their plans, as Gilbert’s supporters traveled throughout England with promotional literature proving England’s claim to North America. Gilbert’s experts used maps and charts to publicize and navigate, while his pilots experimented with new navigating tools and practices. Though he failed to establish a settlement, Gilbert created a blueprint for later Stuart colonizers who achieved his vision of a British Empire in the Western Hemisphere. This book clarifies the role of cartography, natural science, and promotional literature in Elizabethan colonization and elucidates the preparation stages of early modern colonizing voyages.

Download or read book Handbook of Liquid Crystals Volume 2B written by Dietrich Demus and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Liquid Crystals is a unique compendium of knowledge on all aspects of liquid crystals. In over 2000 pages the Handbook provides detailed information on the basic principles of both low- and high-molecular weight materials, as well as the synthesis, characterization, modification, and applications (such as in computer displays or as structural materials) of all types of liquid crystals. The five editors of the Handbook are internationally renowned experts from both industry and academia and have drawn together over 70 leading figures in the field as authors. The four volumes of the Handbook are designed both to be used together or as stand-alone reference sources. Some users will require the whole set, others will be best served with one or two of the volumes. Volume 1 deals with the basic physical and chemical principles of liquid crystals, including structure-property relationships, nomenclature, phase behavior, characterization methods, and general synthesis and application strategies. As such this volume provides an excellent introduction to the field and a powerful learning and teaching tool for graduate students and above. Volumes 2A and 2B concentrate on low-molecular weight materials, for example those typically used in display technology. A high quality survey of the literature is provided along with full details of molecular design strategies, phase characterization and control, and applications development. These volumes are therefore by far the most detailed reference sources on these industrially very important materials, ideally suited for professionals in the field. Volume 3 concentrates on high-molecular weight, or polymeric, liquid crystals, some of which are found in structural applications and others occur as natural products of living systems. A high-quality literature survey is complemented by full detail of the synthesis, processing, analysis, and applications of all important materials classes. This volume is the most comprehensive reference source on these materials, and is therefore ideally suited for professionals in the field.

Download or read book Gilbert Stuart and the Impact of Manic Depression written by Dorinda Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early American painter Gilbert Stuart has long been mistakenly represented as a hard-drinking rogue, habitual liar, and inexplicable financial failure. To explain his stylistic unevenness as an artist, he is assumed to have had an inferior assistant, but the documentary evidence for an assistant who painted on his portraits is non-existent-in fact, there is evidence to the contrary. This ground-breaking study demonstrates that Stuart suffered from a hereditary form of manic depression, leading him to create pictures that contain peculiar lapses characteristic of a manic-depressive, or bipolar, artist. Using documentary and empirical evidence-from diaries and letters to x-radiographs of paintings-this book fills important gaps in our knowledge of Stuart, and connects the strange visual effects in some of Stuart's paintings with cognitive deficits attendant with the disorder. In addition to Stuart, other bipolar artists, including George Romney, Raphaelle Peale, Gilbert Stuart Newton, and William Rimmer, are discussed in relation to these deficits, revealing patterns which carry broader implications for all manic-depressive artists. This volume is a significant contribution not only to studies of Stuart and the four other painters but also to our understanding of the mind of a manic-depressive artist. It bridges the broad disciplines of art history and psychopathology.
