Download or read book The Littlest Giant written by Joshua M. Greene and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated modern adaptation of the beloved Indian classic “Ten Avatars.” King Bali is not a bad soul; he’s just ambitious. He wants big things! As a consequence, he doesn’t have friends. What he does have is an evil adviser named Shukra, who is even more ambitious than the king. When King Bali is visited by a tiny sage, Shukra is suspicious and warns the king to stay away. In this retelling of an ancient story from the Sanskrit histories, King Bali learns that big things can come in small packages — and that sometimes a small courtesy can bring big rewards. Illustrator Emma Moore applies luminescent colors and dynamic perspectives to her visualization of this tale of big and little, adapted from India’s beloved “Ten Avatars.” Author Joshua M. Greene’s elegant and direct storytelling renders an otherwise esoteric subject accessible and relevant for contemporary young readers.

Download or read book The Story of the Life of Mackay of Uganda Pioneer Missionary written by Alexina Mackay Harrison and published by . This book was released on 1898 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Story of the Life of Mackay of Uganda [Told for Boys, i.e., written especially for boys--From Preface] is a biography of Alexander Murdoch Mackay (1849--90), a pioneering Scottish missionary to Uganda. Written by Mackay's sister, Alexina Mackay Harrison, and published in London in 1892, the book was intended to inspire boys to follow Mackay's example and devote their lives to service in Africa. It begins with a brief account of the early European explorers of Africa: Mungo Park, who in 1796 ventured up the River Niger; James Bruce, who in 1770 traced the Blue Nile to its source; and other explorers, including Speke, Grant, Stanley, and Livingstone. An account of Mackay's early life in Scotland follows, reporting the influence on him of a deeply religious and highly literate family, and his early commitment to preaching the Christian gospel. It recounts Mackay's studies in engineering at the University of Berlin, his learning German, and the close ties he developed with German church and missionary circles. In 1876, Mackay answered a call of the Church Missionary Society to serve in Uganda. He arrived in Africa in November 1878, where he spent nearly 14 years, never once returning to his native Scotland. The book describes Mackay's friendship with King Mutesa I of Buganda (reigned, 1856--84) and his difficulties under Mutesa's successor, King Mwanga, who fiercely persecuted the early Ugandan church. The concluding chapter recounts the work of Alfred R. Tucker, Anglican bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1890--99 and first bishop of Uganda in 1899--1911, and of six early Ugandan Christians who continued Mackay's work after his death: Sembera Mackay, Henry Wright Duta, Mika Sematimba, Paulo Bakunga, Zachariah Kizito, and Yohann Mwira"--https://www.loc.gov/item/2021666837

Download or read book Three Children s Novels by Christopher Pearse Cranch written by Christopher Pearse Cranch and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his day, Christopher Pearse Cranch (1813-1892) was a well-known figure in American arts and letters, with close ties to the New England Transcendentalists. Though Cranch made his mark in fields ranging from poetry and journalism to caricature and oil painting, his most enduring achievements are his novels for children. Collected here for the first time in one volume, these three works - The Last of the Huggermuggers, Kobboltozo: A Sequel to the Last of the Huggermuggers, and The Legend of Dr. Theophilus; or, The Enchanted Clothes - establish Cranch as a pioneer in American fantasy fiction. Until now, these texts have been largely inaccessible. Huggermuggers (1866) and Kobboltozo (1867) went through several printings during the last half of the nineteenth century but have not been reissued since 1901. The manuscript of Cranch's third and last novel, The Legend of Dr. Theophilus, disappeared around 1870 and did not resurface until the 1980s. It has never before been published. As the editors explain in their introduction, Cranch was the first American author to write novel-length works solely for children, and to fuse elements of fantasy and adventure. In an era when most juvenile books emphasized moral rectitude and acquiescence to adult authority, Cranch put a higher premium on humor and the imaginative aspects of storytelling. Huggermuggers and Kobboltozo relate the still-entertaining escapades of a shipwrecked American boy, Jacky Cable, and the gentle giants and evil dwarfs who inhabit the unknown island on which he is marooned. In Dr. Theophilus Cranch takes children to a faraway place where the sun cannot penetrate the fog and where a suit of enchanted clothes can cause mayhem and grief. True to the novel's closing lines - "For the young, a magic story. For the old, an allegory" - Cranch also satirizes the medical profession and his society's stunting reverence for the past. The editors note superficial parallels between Cranch's novels and Robinson Crusoe, Gulliver's Travels, and the English "Jack Tales," but they believe that Cranch's stories actually belong more to the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, earlier masters at combining elements of fantasy and adventure. They also detect in Cranch's heroes a thoroughly American self-reliance and resourcefulness. Written during an important transition in the history of American children's literature, these three novels are of special interest to scholars of American Romanticism. Perhaps most important of all they have not lost their attraction for young readers. The presence in this volume of eleven of Cranch's original illustrations for Huggermuggers and Kobboltozo only enhances the stories' imaginative appeal.
