Book excerpt: Following back-to-back, long-term undercover assignments in Indianapolis and Dallas, the latter resulting in four dead, FBI Special Agent Jake Kruse returns to Los Angeles. Meeting with the new Assistant Director in Charge, Jake learns of three squad openings. The first two involve wearing a tie and being tethered to a desk. The third, however, is a low-risk undercover assignment that will keep him out of the office for months. It isn't a difficult decision, and he volunteers for the UC op, an intelligence gathering mission targeting foreign agents working for the People's Republic of China. Posing as an office supply salesman, Jake befriends a Chinese American business owner believed to be working for an intelligence officer operating out of the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles. Within weeks, the probe reveals a public corruption and human trafficking operation involving politicians and Hollywood executives. When a young girl is victimized by targets of the investigation, Jake must risk his life and his career to save her from sexual exploitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting the truths of Canada's Indian residential school system has been likened to waking a sleeping giant. In The Sleeping Giant Awakens, David B. MacDonald uses genocide as an analytical tool to better understand Canada's past and present relationships between settlers and Indigenous peoples. Starting with a discussion of how genocide is defined in domestic and international law, the book applies the concept to the forced transfer of Indigenous children to residential schools and the "Sixties Scoop," in which Indigenous children were taken from their communities and placed in foster homes or adopted. Based on archival research, extensive interviews with residential school Survivors, and officials at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, among others, The Sleeping Giant Awakens offers a unique and timely perspective on the prospects for conciliation after genocide, exploring the difficulties in moving forward in a context where many settlers know little of the residential schools and ongoing legacies of colonization and need to have a better conception of Indigenous rights. It provides a detailed analysis of how the TRC approached genocide in its deliberations and in its Final Report. Crucially, MacDonald engages critics who argue that the term genocide impedes understanding of the IRS system and imperils prospects for conciliation. By contrast, this book sees genocide recognition as an important basis for meaningful discussions of how to engage Indigenous-settler relations in respectful and proactive ways.

Book excerpt: A short text (68 pages) that puts the tragic events of 9/11 into political context. The focus is on how the American political system will respond to the challenges posed by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The author is interested in how the major institutions, such as the Presidency, the Congress, and our system of civil liberties and rights is changing to respond to this challenge. The book is well grounded in historical context as well, considering how other major crises have been handled. Other areas typically covered in an American government course, such as the media, religion, and public opinion are emphasized as well. Free when bundled.

Book excerpt: An “ingenious, horrifying” (The Guardian) first contact story by one of the twentieth century’s most brilliant—and neglected—science fiction and horror writers, whom Stephen King called “the best writer of science fiction that England has ever produced.” “Few books capture the obscure, elliptical way that threats move from the background to the foreground of reality like The Kraken Wakes. . . . Feels all too familiar in today’s age of anti-vaxxer disinformation and QAnon conspiracists.” —Alexandra Kleeman, from the Introduction What if aliens invaded and colonized Earth’s oceans rather than its land? Britain, 1953: It begins with red dots appearing across the sky and crashing to the oceans’ deeps. At first, many people believe that these aliens are interested in only what’s down below. But when the polar ice-caps begin to melt, it becomes clear that these beings are not interested in sharing the Earth and that humankind might just be on the brink of extinction. . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tragic Consequences was written for Americans who are concerned about the cultural decline they see all around them, people who watch the nightly news and ask themselves, “What is happening to our country?” It seems we have become a nation of people who are offended by everything but sin. What is happening to our country is simple to explain but sad observe: We are seeing what a culture of sin can do to a country. It is a culture of darkness and depravity, a culture lacking in moral restraint, and a culture where life has little value. When a nation rejects God and accepts sin, the lurid stories carried on nightly news programs are the inevitable result. Within the problem is the solution. Biblical morality reestablished in America by an uprising of God's people standing for righteousness will bring God's forgiveness and our healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mythic discourses in the present day show how vernacular heritage continues to function and be valuable through emergent interpretations and revaluations. At the same time, continuities in mythic images, motifs, myths and genres reveal the longue durée of mythologies and their transformations. The eighteen articles of Mythic Discourses address the many facets of myth in Uralic cultures, from the Finnish and Karelian world-creation to Nenets shamans, offering multidisciplinary perspectives from twenty eastern and western scholars. The mythologies of Uralic peoples differ so considerably that mythology is approached here in a broad sense, including myths proper, religious beliefs and associated rituals. Traditions are addressed individually, typologically, and in historical perspective. The range and breadth of the articles, presenting diverse living mythologies, their histories and relationships to traditions of other cultures such as Germanic and Slavic, all come together to offer a far richer and more developed perspective on Uralic traditions than any one article could do alone.

Book excerpt: The final novel of the acclaimed fantasy series continues the adventures of Titus, Earl of Groan, completed by the author’s widow based on his fragments. Mervyn Peake’s series of novels featuring the inhabitants of Gormenghast castle are “a work of extraordinary imagination.” After Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone, Peake was working on a fourth chapter in the series before his death. Maeve Gilmore, Mervyn Peake's widow, wrote Titus Awakes based on those pages left behind by Peake (The New Yorker). Titus Awakes picks up the story of Titus, 77th Earl of Groan, as he wanders through the modern world. Fans of the Gormenghast novels will relish this continuation of the world Peake created and of the lives of unforgettable characters from the original novels, including the scheming Steerpike, Titus's sister Fuchsia, and the long-serving Dr. Prunesquallor. Published a century after Peake's birth, this strikingly original novel provides a moving coda to Peake's masterwork.
