Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if? Abraham Lincoln dies only a few days after becoming president. Vice President Hannibal Hamlin takes over the office and then hastens to Charleston, South Carolina, in a desperate attempt to avert the Civil War. Accompanying him as military advisor is a brilliant young general. The Ghosts of Antietam is an adventure in alternate history that takes a fresh look at the Civil War through the eyes of one of its most maligned characters, General George B. McClellan. The novel poses questions: Was the bloody conflict truly inevitable? Was McClellan a traitor or a hero? Would Hannibal Hamlin have made a better president than Abraham Lincoln? At Charleston, George McClellan saves Hamlin from death at the hands of a rabid secessionist and enjoys a vexing flirtation with the beautiful Mary Chesnut. After seeing a tragic example of what the Civil War would be, McClellan urges Hamlin to make a courageous political maneuver, which lures Jefferson Davis back into Union and dooms the Confederacy. But later, McClellan is shocked into the realization of an alternate world in which the war actually did take place. George McClellan now relives his wartime odyssey of conflict with Lincoln and the devious, vindictive secretary of war Edwin Stanton. The Ghosts of Antietam is an adventure of conflicting realities in which President Hamlin ends slavery without war and George McClellan attempts to save Lincoln from assassination, with surprising results. Or as the ghost of Edwin Stanton says to Vice President Richard Nixon, Its not the same old bullshit they put in the history books.

Book Holding Charleston by the Bridle

Download or read book Holding Charleston by the Bridle written by W. Clifford Roberts and published by Savas Beatie. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the eve of the Civil War, the London Times informed its readers that Castle Pinckney has “been kept garrisoned, not to protect Charleston from naval attack from the ocean, but to serve as a bridle upon the city.” Located on a marshy island in the center of Charleston’s magnificent harbor, the large cannons on the ramparts of this horseshoe-shaped masonry fort had the ability to command downtown Charleston and the busy wharves along East Bay Street. This inescapable fact made Pinckney an important chess piece in the secession turmoil of 1832 and 1850, and in the months leading up to the 1861 bombardment of Fort Sumter. Holding Charleston by the Bridle: Castle Pinckney and the Civil War by W. Clifford Roberts, Jr. and Matthew A. M. Locke is the first book on the subject—from the fort’s innovative design as part of America’s “Second System” of coastal fortifications to the modern challenges of preserving its weathered brick walls against rising sea levels. The impressive bastion was constructed as a state-of-the-art seacoast fortress on the eve of the War of 1812. Luminaries including President James Monroe and Gens. Winfield Scott, Robert E. Lee, and P. G. T. Beauregard inspected its casemates and barracks. The history of Pinckney is as impressive as its list of visiting VIPs. Defending the fort was one of Winfield Scott’s major concerns during the Nullification Crisis of 1832. Seminole Indians and Africans from the illegal slave ship Echo were held there. In 1860, Maj. Robert Anderson knew Pinckney was the key to protecting his small Federal garrison at Fort Moultrie, but his requests to Washington for troops to hold it went unheeded. That December, three companies of Charleston militia scaled Pinckney’s walls and seized the fort in a daring act that pushed the nation to the edge of civil war. After First Manassas (Bull Run), 156 captured Yankee officers and enlisted men were sent to the island, and in 1863, members of the famous 54th Massachusetts were held there as POWs. The fort’s guns helped defend Charleston during the war’s longest siege. By 1865, the old fortress had been transformed into an earthen barbette battery with a Brooke Rifle and three giant 10-inch Columbiads. During Reconstruction Pinckney became an “American Bastille” for Southerners accused of crimes against the government. Authors Roberts and Locke rely on extensive primary research and archaeological evidence to tell the full story of Castle Pinckney for the first time. Given its importance to America’s history, it is a history long overdue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stretch of land known as East of the Cooper, featuring the charming town of Mount Pleasant, is interwoven with innumerable waterways; these waters pulsate with the ebb and flow of tides like a network of arteries, veins, and capillaries connecting to the living heart that is the sea. Mount Pleasants location on the Charleston harbor and its deep water access has ensured that the sea has played a major role in the lives of its residents, providing thriving maritime industries that are at once historic and contemporary. East Cooper: A Maritime Heritage is a celebration of those industries and the families and vessels that have contributed to this vital part of Lowcountry culture. Throughout history, indigenous peoples, colonists, plantation owners, and seafood industry entrepreneurs have traversed the miles of rivers, marshy creeks, and coastlines of the East Cooper area. This collection of images demonstrates the ingenuity and artistry of these people whose descendants shared their pasts with the authors as generously as their ancestors shared their skills and intimate relationships with the local waters.

Download or read book Mount Pleasant written by Mary-Julia C. Royall and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2001-11-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located along the shores of the Charleston harbor, Mount Pleasant is a graceful, enchanting community known for its exquisite views of the water and landscape. Once comprised of five small hamlets, the area has seen phenomenal increases in both business and population, a growth that was correctly predicted when the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge linked the town with Charleston in 1929. It is a place where small-town charm lingers, even among the fast-paced life in which most residents now take part. Mount Pleasant: The Friendly Town begins the community's story where Mount Pleasant: The Victorian Village left off, and it bridges the 1930s with modern times. This compelling history illustrates the ways in which Mount Pleasant coped with the happenings of the 20th century, including such far-reaching events as World War II and the recovery following the Great Depression, and those much more intimate such as the devastation of Hurricane Hugo and the sesquicentennial celebration of the town. Readers will experience this unique area of South Carolina through the eyes of the residents who lived here during the town's coming of age.
