Book excerpt: Written in collaboration with Blackfoot tribal historians and educators, Amskapi Pikuni: The Blackfeet People portrays a strong native nation fighting for two centuries against domination by Anglo invaders. The Blackfeet endured bungling, corrupt, and drunken agents; racist schoolteachers; and a federal Indian Bureau that failed to disburse millions of dollars owed to the tribe. Located on a reservation in Montana cut and cut again to give land to white ranchers, the Blackfeet adapted to complete loss of their staple food, bison—a collapse of what had been a sustainable economy throughout their history. Despite all of these challenges, the nation held to its values and continues to proudly preserve its culture.

Book The Vengeful Wife and Other Blackfoot Stories

Download or read book The Vengeful Wife and Other Blackfoot Stories written by Hugh A. Dempsey and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vengeful Wife and Other Blackfoot Stories by historian Hugh A. Dempsey presents tales from the Blackfoot tribe of the plains of northern Montana and southern Alberta. Drawn from Dempsey’s fifty years of interviewing tribal elders and sifting through archives, the stories are about warfare, hunting, ceremonies, sexuality, the supernatural, and captivity, and they reflect the Blackfoot worldview and beliefs. This remarkable compilation of oral history and accounts from government officials, travelers, and fur traders preserves stories dating from the late 1700s to the early 1900s. "The importance of oral history," Dempsey writes, "is reflected in the fact that the majority of these stories would never have survived had they not been preserved orally from generation to generation."

Book Blood on the Marias

  • Author : Paul R. Wylie
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book Blood on the Marias written by Paul R. Wylie and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of January 23, 1870, troops of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry attacked a Piegan Indian village on the Marias River in Montana Territory, killing many more than the army’s count of 173, most of them women, children, and old men. The village was afflicted with smallpox. Worse, it was the wrong encampment. Intended as a retaliation against Mountain Chief’s renegade band, the massacre sparked public outrage when news sources revealed that the battalion had attacked Heavy Runner’s innocent village—and that guides had told its inebriated commander, Major Eugene Baker, he was on the wrong trail, but he struck anyway. Remembered as one of the most heinous incidents of the Indian Wars, the Baker Massacre has often been overshadowed by the better-known Battle of the Little Bighorn and has never received full treatment until now. Author Paul R. Wylie plumbs the history of Euro-American involvement with the Piegans, who were members of the Blackfeet Confederacy. His research shows the tribe was trading furs for whiskey with the Hudson’s Bay Company before Meriwether Lewis encountered them in 1806. As American fur traders and trappers moved into the region, the U.S. government soon followed, making treaties it did not honor. When the gold rush started in the 1860s and the U.S. Army arrived, pressure from Montana citizens to control the Piegans and make the territory safe led Generals William Tecumseh Sherman and Philip H. Sheridan to send Baker and the 2nd Cavalry, with tragic consequences. Although these generals sought to dictate press coverage thereafter, news of the cruelty of the killings appeared in the New York Times, which called the massacre “a more shocking affair than the sacking of Black Kettle’s camp on the Washita” two years earlier. While other scholars have written about the Baker Massacre in related contexts, Blood on the Marias gives this infamous event the definitive treatment it deserves. Baker’s inept command lit the spark of violence, but decades of tension between Piegans and whites set the stage for a brutal and too-often-forgotten incident.

But Ellen and her friends don't give up easily. They realize they've been called to give voice to the invisible women who suffered behind the walls of the house for decades. If you can't get enough of Karen White, Heather Graham, Bobbie Holmes, or Jana Deleon, then this "perfect mix of fun and scary" paranormal mystery is for you! "Slightly wacky ladies, humor & good intentions result in a very interesting story. I’ve already ordered the second one in the series."--Lynne J. Condon ★★★★★ "They begin a dangerous quest digging into the real history behind the Gold House. What they find will blow your mind! My heart was racing throughout this entire book. If you believe in ghosts or even if you don't, I suggest reading by a lamp. I jumped several times as if a movie were playing inside my mind. . . . The three women in this book are wonderful. This is definitely a must-read. 5 stars for Eva! Well done!!"--Book Lover Reviews ★★★★★ "I chose this book to read because I had an awful cold and figured that if I wasn't impressed, I'd just skip finishing it! Boy was I wrong! It was really good! Even when my eyes said they were tired and should be resting, my mind said you gotta keep going. It was a real treat!"--Lynn Reener ★★★★★ "This captivating tale of three friends setting out to renovate and flip a house is definitely not your average haunted house story. The three lead characters and all the other people in this story (whether major players or merely peripheral persons) are so carefully crafted with their own unique personalities and attributes that they spring to life in the reader’s mind. The story, itself, is mesmerizing with all the back-story details of the characters’ lives and especially with the convoluted and macabre history of The Gold House (the house purchased by our leading ladies). This is one of those stories that is achingly hard to put down when bedtime rolls around or something requires your immediate attention. It really is that good."--txdoc, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "This is my first experience with author Eva Pohler and I can't believe I haven't read anything of hers before! Loved the book and I'll be checking out more in this series."--The Novel Lady ★★★★★ "Loved reading this book. So sad that there were people mistreated in our former days. These types of retreats or rest care facilities actually used to operate in the US for many years. Some state owned too. IN The 70 ALL were shut down. THE GHOST that haunted the house and her ancestors first tells a telling tale about what happened inside the walls of the house three women buy and restore to its former glory."--Cozy Mystery Reader ★★★★★ "This is a real page turner. Riviting, and exciting. The characters are very well written, its easy to read and you won't want to put it down."--Southermermaid85, Goodreads Reviewer ★★★★★ "Secrets of the Greek Revival sent a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this story. I couldn’t put this one down. If you are looking for a great read then this is your book. I seriously didn’t know what was coming next. As I don’t like to give away spoilers, and believe me you would not want me to, I will however tell you that I enjoyed this book so much I kept, switching from reading to audio so I could enjoy while driving to and from work."--Denise M. ★★★★★ Grab your copy to begin this ghostly adventure today!
