Edwards A man meets an ex-acquaintance on a train journey who has apparently swiped 75,000 Pounds Sterling. The man is accused of complicity at first and then he is written off with a simple mistaken identity. The events which I am about to relate took place between nine and ten years ago. Sebastopol had fallen in the early spring, the peace of Paris had been concluded since March, our commercial relations with the Russian empire were but recently renewed; and I, returning home after my first northward journey since the war, was well pleased with the prospect of spending the month of December under the hospitable and thoroughly English roof of my excellent friend, Jonathan Jelf, Esq., of Dumbleton Manor, Clayborough, East Anglia. Travelling in the interests of the wellknown firm in which it is my lot to be a junior partner, I had been called upon to visit not only the capitals of Russia and Poland, but had found it also necessary to pass some weeks among the trading ports of the Baltic; whence it came that the year was already far spent before I again set foot on English soil, and that, instead of shooting pheasants with him, as I had hoped, in October, I came to be my friend's guest during the more genial Christmas-tide. Book In the Shadow of Sherlock Holmes

Download or read book In the Shadow of Sherlock Holmes written by John Polidori and published by IDW Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Shadow of Sherlock Holmes features 21 stories published during the earliest days of detective literature, 1862 to 1910. These stories are stand-outs in the field, and though not well-known today, they easily match or beat Arthur Conan Doyle's master detective in whose shadow they have been relegated. IDW corrects that literary oversight in this "best of the best" collection.

Book The Secret of the League

Download or read book The Secret of the League written by Ernest Bramah and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A secret organization of upper class dissenters, called The League, is not happy with their weak government and wants to overthrow it. In a clever plan they bring about a civil war in Britain by manipulating the coal strike with foreign help and plant a fascist regime in its place. What comes about is a total breakdown giving an accurate prediction of the rise of Fascism, as George Orwell famously noted. Superficially the novel (also alternately known as What Might Have Been) seems like it is promoting the cause of The League but it is in fact a bleary take on what might end up happening if such a thing comes to pass when the government is overtaken by the conservatives. Who becomes a hero and who becomes a villain is only a matter of seizing absolute power! In fact Orwell credited this novel as his inspiration behind his own successful dystopian classic 1984. Ernest Bramah (1868–1942) was an English author and a recluse who wrote the famous Kai Lung and Max Carrados series. Interestingly Bramah's humorous works were ranked with Jerome K Jerome and W. W. Jacobs, his detective stories with Conan Doyle, his politico-science fiction with H. G. Wells and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood.
