Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The Ghost was the first of many "fantasias on modern times" written by Arnold Bennett. These illustrated his ability to produce not only realistic novels, perfected in his portrayals of provincial English life set in the Staffordshire scenery of his childhood, but also more sensational stories, written after his move to London where he developed a far more cosmopolitan interest. A supernatural story, The Ghost tells the tale of a beautiful opera star, Rosetta Rosa, whose beauty seems to cast a spell upon all those who meet her. When Carl Foster, a young doctor, sees Rosa at a London opera, and is instantly captivated, he soon finds himself plagued by mysterious happenings, and begins to see a malignant, spectral figure everywhere he turns. When another man enraptured by Rosa mysteriously dies, Carl begins to wonder whether loving her could bring with it a deadly curse. Moving between London and Paris, this fast-paced story draws the reader into a ghostly world of twists, turns, drama, and suspense.

Book excerpt: It was with a certain nervousness that I mentioned Sullivan's name to the gentleman at the receipt oftickets-a sort of transcendantly fine version of Keith Prowse's clerk-but Sullivan had notexaggerated his own importance. They did look after me. They looked after me with such respectfuldiligence that I might have been excused for supposing that they had mistaken me for the Shah ofPersia in disguise. I was introduced into Sullivan's box with every circumstance of pomp. The boxwas empty. Naturally I had arrived there first. I sat down, and watched the enormous house fill, butnot until I had glanced into the mirror that hung on the crimson partition of the box to make surethat my appearance did no discredit to Sullivan and the great lady, his wife.At eight o'clock, when the conductor appeared at his desk to an accompaniment of applauding tapsfrom the musicians, the house was nearly full. The four tiers sent forth a sparkle of diamonds, ofsilk, and of white arms and shoulders which rivalled the glitter of the vast crystal chandelier. Thewide floor of serried stalls (those stalls of which one pair at least had gone for six pound ten) addedtheir more sombre brilliance to the show, while far above, stretching away indefinitely to the veryfurthest roof, was the gallery (where but for Sullivan I should have been), a mass of black spottedwith white faces.Excitement was in the air: the expectation of seeing once again Rosetta Rosa, the girl with thegolden throat, the mere girl who, two years ago, had in one brief month captured London, and whonow, after a period of petulance, had decided to recapture London. On ordinary nights, for theinhabitants of boxes, the Opera is a social observance, an exhibition of jewels, something betweenan F.O. reception and a conversazione with music in the distance. But to-night the habituésconfessed a genuine interest in the stage itself, abandoning their rôle of players. Dozens of timessince then have I been to the Opera, and never have I witnessed the candid enthusiasm of thatnight. If London can be naïve, it was naïve then.

Book The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women

Download or read book The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women written by Marie O'Regan and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2012-10-18 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 25 chilling short stories by outstanding female writers. Women have always written exceptional stories of horror and the supernatural. This anthology aims to showcase the very best of these, from Amelia B. Edwards's 'The Phantom Coach', published in 1864, through past luminaries such as Edith Wharton and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, to modern talents including Muriel Gray, Sarah Pinborough and Lilith Saintcrow. From tales of ghostly children to visitations by departed loved ones, and from heart-rending stories to the profoundly unsettling depiction of extreme malevolence, what each of these stories has in common is the effect of a slight chilling of the skin, a feeling of something not quite present, but nevertheless there. If anything, this showcase anthology proves that sometimes the female of the species can also be the most terrifying . . .
