Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kat trembled in fear; her heart racing as she looked around the windowless room. She sat against the headboard of the bed, staring at the scarring and damage of the wood of the four bedposts, indicating that women before her had been shackled against their will. She glanced fearfully at the guard who sat across the room from her, watching her without sympathy. How could her life have changed in a flash of a few seconds? Just a year before she had joined her family on the island, which had seemed to promise peace and tranquility. It had been anything but for her, as she battled her mother's intolerance and abuse of her, and what seemed like constant scheming against her by her arch enemy she'd known since childhood. And now, just as life was beginning to fulfill the promise of peace, she was facing terror instead. Kat heard the door to her room open, and her eyes widened as he walked in, smiling and greeting her with those black, soulless eyes that were devoid of humanity. Kito came to her mind instantly. She knew now why she was there. Revenge on Kito Robinson. As Kito's enemy drew near to her, Kat wondered if she had any hope at all. Would Kito be able to use his vast resources to find her on time? Or was she doomed as the other missing islanders had been? Cage the Hummingbird tells the story of Kat Jordan, a quirky, impulsive, art prodigy, brain injury survivor who limps her way into the life of Kito Robinson. Kito's atheistic world will be rocked by Kat's outlandish humor, antics, and devotion to her faith. It is a tale of overcoming obstacles of cultural differences, beliefs, and severe suffering and trauma through the incredible power of having a relationship and identity in Jesus Christ.

Book Psychedelia and Other Colours

Download or read book Psychedelia and Other Colours written by Rob Chapman and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Psychedelia and Other Colours, acclaimed author Rob Chapman explores in crystalline detail the history, precedents and cultural impact of LSD, from the earliest experiments in painting with light and immersive environments to the thriving avant-garde scene that existed in San Francisco even before the Grateful Dead and the Fillmore Auditorium. In the UK, he documents an entirely different history, and one that has never been told before. It has its roots in fairy tales and fairgrounds, the music hall and the dead of Flanders fields, in the Festival of Britain and that peculiarly British strand of surrealism that culminated in the Magical Mystery Tour. Sitars and Sergeant Pepper, surfadelica and the Soft Machine, light shows and love-ins - the mind-expanding effects of acid were to redefine popular culture as we know it. Psychedelia and Other Colours documents these utopian reverberations - and the dark side of their moon - in a perfect portrait.

Book The Puerto Rican Movement

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrés Torres
  • Publisher : Temple University Press
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9781566396189
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book The Puerto Rican Movement written by Andrés Torres and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little attention has been paid to the Latino movements of the 1960s and 1970s in the literature of social movements. This volume is the first significant look at the organizations that emerged in the late 1960s to promote Puerto Rican independence and the radical transformation of U.S. society. The Puerto Rican movement was a response to U.S. colonialism on the island and to the poverty and discrimination faced by most Puerto Ricans on the mainland. This anthology looks at the organizations that emerged to combat these two problems in such places as Boston, Chicago, Hartford, New York, and Philadelphia. Almost all the contributors worked with the organizations they describe. Interviews with such key figures as Elizam Escobar, Piri Thomas, and Luis Fuentes, as well as accounts by people active in the gay/lesbian, African American, and white Left movements, create a vivid picture of why and how people became radicalized and how their ideals intersected with their group's own dynamics.

Book Recovering Yiddishland

Download or read book Recovering Yiddishland written by Merle L. Bachman and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to traditional narratives of assimilation, in the bargain made for an American identity, Jews freely surrendered Yiddish language and culture. Or did they? Recovering "Yiddishland" seeks to “return” readers to a threshold where Americanization also meant ambivalence and resistance. It reconstructs “Yiddishland” as a cultural space produced by Yiddish immigrant writers from the 1890s through the 1930s, largely within the sphere of New York. Rejecting conventional literary history, the book spotlights “threshold texts” in the unjustly forgotten literary project of these writers—texts that reveal unexpected and illuminating critiques of Americanization. Merle Lyn Bachman takes a fresh look at Abraham Cahan’s Yekl and Anzia Yezierska’s Hungry Hearts, tracing in them a re-inscription of the Yiddish world that various characters seem to be committed to leaving behind. She also translates for the first time Yiddish poems featuring African-Americans that reflect the writers’ confrontation with their passage, as Jews, into “white” identities. Finally, Bachman discusses the modernist poet Mikhl Likht, whose simultaneous embrace of American literature and resistance to assimilating into English marked him as the supreme “threshold” poet. Conscious of the risks of any postmodern—“post-assimilation”—attempt to recover the past, Bachman invents the figure of “the Yiddish student,” whose comments can reflect—and keep in check—the nostalgia and naivete of the returnee to Yiddish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen F. Stein University of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA Rachel Carson is the twentieth century’s most significant environmentalist. Her books about the sea blend science and poetry as they invite readers to share her celebration of the ocean’s wonders. Silent Spring, her graphic and compelling exposé of the damage caused by the widespread aerial spraying of persistent organic pesticides such as DDT, opened our eyes to the interconnectedness of all living beings and the ecological systems we inhabit. Carson’s work challenges our belief that science and technology can control the natural world, asks us to recognize our place in the world around us, and inspires us to treat the earth respectfully. She calls us to rekindle our sense of wonder at nature’s power and beauty, and to tread lightly on the earth so that it will continue to sustain us and our descendants. This book guides readers on a journey through Carson’s life and work, considers Carson’s legacies, and points to some of the continuing challenges to sustainability. It provides a listing of resources for reading, learning, or teaching about the environment, about nature writing, and about Carson and the crucial issues she addressed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in German, Italian and French these articles have been translated into English for the first time by the author, the former archivist of The Warburg Institute, London. Aby Warburg’s research and writings centred on images, their origins and metamorphoses, and their explanations and interpretations. The articles include discussions of Warburg’s academic work with colleagues such as James Loeb, the American Hellenist and philanthropist, and founder of the Loeb Classical Library, and with Josef Strzygowski, the Polish-Austrian art historian of the Vienna School of Art History. Further articles include notes on Warburg’s Serpent Ritual lecture of 1923; his politico-cultural initiative in 1914–1915; his work on caricature, in particular the Struwwelpeter topic; and discussions on the topic of Judaica. The Viennese art historian Fritz Saxl became his trusted friend and collaborator helping to gather Warburg’s large collection of books and photographs into the foundation of an academic institution in Hamburg in the 1920s, and then for a second time in London in the 1930s. The Warburg Institute has become one of the world’s leading centres of intellectual history. (CS 1109).
