Book Biker Gangs and Transnational Organized Crime

Download or read book Biker Gangs and Transnational Organized Crime written by Thomas Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biker Gangs and Transnational Organized Crime, Second Edition, describes and analyzes a rapidly expanding global problem: criminal acts committed by motorcycle gangs. Thomas Barker, one of the world’s top experts on outlaw biker gangs, offers fascinating details about the Bandidos, the Vagos, the Mongols, and other "one percenters" (criminal biker gangs, as opposed to the vast majority of motorcycle enthusiasts). He combines this data with a strengthened conceptual framework that makes sense of this complicated picture. U.S.-based motorcycle gangs like the Hells Angels have proliferated, especially in Canada and Europe, to the point where these gangs have more members in other countries than in the United States. Increasingly more often in recent years their crimes are not limited to rumbles or drug use—these gangs challenge the dominance of organized crime, leading to violent conflicts between the rivals. Germany, Scandinavia, the UK, the Netherlands, and Canada are particularly hard-hit by this rising violence. One of Barker’s unique contributions is his Criminal Organization Continuum, building on the groundbreaking network approach to organized crime proposed by Klaus von Lampe. Introduced in the first edition, Barker elaborates his continuum tool and makes it more multi-dimensional to help refine the definition of adult criminal gangs. The product of years of research, this book lays the groundwork for further study by offering students, police, and researchers the most thorough account available of outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Book excerpt: A gripping history of outlaw motorcycle club culture from its beginnings to the present day. In a world where most of us roll over when confronted by the power of authority, the antihero figure of the outlaw biker stands beyond the crowd, a beacon of social freedom. By choosing to live outside of society’s conventions, the one-percenter has the inner strength to act on his own convictions. Though most of us are too timid to venture into these outer margins of society, the one-percenter not only enters those margins—he stomps on them. In Hell on Wheels, avid motorcyclist Bill Hayes dives deep into the world of the outlaw motorcyclist, exploring legendary clubs like the Hells Angels, the Bandidos, the Outlaws, the Vagos, the Pagans, the Mongols, and many others, allowing the reader to peer into motorcycle club culture. Featuring both modern and historical photos, as well as a rare collection of club memorabilia found in no other publication, Hell on Wheels traces the roots and development of motorcycle club culture: its origins in the years following World War II; the turbulent 1960s and the disco era; the transition of clubs from loose groups of hooligans to highly organized machines; and, more recently, the copious clashes with law enforcement amid the post-9/11 world of the Patriot Act. The one-percenter has become one of the most popular figures in outlaw culture, and Hell on Wheels is his story.

Book The Outlaw Biker Legacy of Violence

Download or read book The Outlaw Biker Legacy of Violence written by Thomas Barker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlaw bikers represent a very small percentage of motorcycle riders who join motorcycle clubs, but they receive disproportionate attention due to their mystique, unconventional behavior, and violence. Although the outlaw biker phenomenon started in the United States, it has since spread throughout the world. The involvement of Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (OMGs) in organized crime at the local, regional, national, and transnational levels fosters violence that puts innocent persons at risk for death or injury and leads to the demonization of “bikers” and the overcriminalization of motorcycle enthusiasts and club members. The Outlaw Biker Legacy of Violence, written by internationally known expert Thomas Barker, addresses the legacy of violence in the outlaw biker culture and tackles the implications of the violence that progressed as outlaw biker clubs evolved into adult criminal gangs engaged in crimes for profit over long periods of time and across borders. Beginning with a history of outlaw bikers and the construction of the “folk devil” of the biker, the book outlines the distinctions between conventional motorcycle clubs, Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs, and Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, and then traces the expansion of these groups across the globe. This book will be relevant to those interested in the examination or investigation of biker gangs in particular or organized criminal groups in general. It is essential reading for criminal justice students and others studying social groups, gangs, and organizations, or the sociology of deviance, and is also relevant for law enforcement professionals dealing with these organizations

Book Outlaw Bikers and Ancient Warbands

Download or read book Outlaw Bikers and Ancient Warbands written by Carl Bradley and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-13 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to compare the shared cultural tenets of ancient warbands and outlaw biker gangs. It argues that the values of hyper-masculinity can be traced from the former into the contemporary environment of the latter: codes of honour, loyalty and bravery have prioritised small groups of males over women and other men, creating a history of hyper-masculinity that shows little sign of stopping. Indeed, Outlaw Bikers and Ancient Warbands: Hyper-Masculinity and Cultural Continuity argues that such hyper-masculine culture can be found in many male groups such as the police, military and sports, and that if we want to understand hyper-masculinity and face it as a society then we need to recognize that outlaw bikers are a reflection of behavior that has a very long tradition. This pioneering work explores these issues from ancient times and into the future.

Book Handbook of Police Administration

Download or read book Handbook of Police Administration written by James Ruiz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As figureheads of the most visible segment of criminal justice, today’s police administrators are forced to tackle challenges never faced by their predecessors. Heightened local and global threats, advanced technologies, and increased demands for procedural transparency require new levels of flexibility, innovative thinking, and the ability to foster and maintain relationships within the community. It is more crucial than ever to recruit and retain capable leaders to guide law enforcement agencies at this pivotal time in history. Covering areas such as leadership in policing, use of force, and understanding how the law shapes police practice, Handbook of Police Administration examines the key topics that must be considered by law enforcement professionals. Recognizing that police leaders need the skills and traits of a politician, accountant, attorney, field lieutenant, and futurist, the authors cover a variety of contemporary issues surrounding police administration and management. Divided into five thematic sections, it considers the legal aspects of overseeing a public sector organization, as well as how research, technology, and training can assist modern police leaders in performing their duties more effectively and efficiently. The book covers problematic issues such as officers accepting gratuities, undercover work, and the time criteria required for promotional consideration. It concludes with a chapter comparing administrative issues in Australia with many of the subjects previously addressed with regard to U.S. protocol. Using a range of perspective, differing viewpoints, and controversial issues, Handbook of Police Administration provides a springboard to stimulate discussion at the cutting-edge of debate in the dynamic field of policing.

Book Agony of Hercules or a Farewell to Democracy Notes of a Stranger

Download or read book Agony of Hercules or a Farewell to Democracy Notes of a Stranger written by Alexander Maistrovoy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy: From Triumph to Suicide What type of society most corresponds to the ideals of justice and rule of law? The answer seemed obvious: democracy. Today it seems a paradox, but ancient thought, humanism, as well as rational thinking with undisguised skepticism are related to democracy. They knew how easy and quickly it transformed into ochlocracy. However, founding fathers of Liberal Democracy, like de Tocqueville, thought that rationalism, combined with a compulsory educational system, improvement of living standards, and an advanced legal system, would become a guarantee of democratic development. Unfortunately, these supporting columns are fatally destroyed today. The idea of equal opportunities was changed by unrestrained craving for consumption and hedonism. We see people completely disconnected from their culture, their own country, or the world. The Principle of “the art of goodness and fairness” by Celsus the Younger, the Principle of “pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety” of The Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776, and the Principle of Utility by Bentham and Mill have been perverted and emasculated to the extent that they have just stopped working. The growing “Red-Green-Brown Alliance” threatens not only Democracy, but states of the West. But the most sinister metamorphosis has occurred to the concept of “human rights.” Human rights organizations have become the "new church," following own ideological orientation and financial interests. It canonizes "human rights," but despises the “human” as a creature that is creative, intelligent, and responsible for its own destiny. It has a distinct racist odor and shows contempt toward minorities—religious and sexual. Astonishingly, having lost its internal stability, democracy seeks for an unrestrained expansion. We observe the silliness worthy of new Moliere's pen: "democratic elections" between tribes practicing a ritual cannibalism, as in Papua New Guinea; between tribal clans like in Pakistan; between religious zealots, as this happened in Egypt. Wasn't it a cruel mockery of History that the EU that was on the verge of collapse virtually awarded itself the Nobel Peace Prize, as it was done by senile Soviet leaders; that the President of USA got the same prize just for empty slogans, like Leonid Brezhnev? As it often happens in History, the most pure and noble idea degenerates into its opposite, turning into a parody of itself.
