Book Combat Medic World War II

Download or read book Combat Medic World War II written by John A. Kerner and published by Donald S. Ellis. This book was released on 2002 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty-plus years later, Dr. John Kerner has gone through his wartime journals and letters home to come up with an insightful account of what it was like to be an infantry doctor in the most harrowing days of fighting in Europe. Resourceful young Lieutenant Kerner improved on the first aid treatment and transporting methods of the wounded, saving lives of hundreds. He bucked hide-bound superiors, insisting on the needed care of frostbitten soldiers. The medical units in Kerner's charge pushed through France and Belgium into Germany, enduring some of the most brutal fighting of the war. Kerner's humanism permeates every page. His concern was for all wounded -- friend and foe.

Book excerpt: Although readily admitting the importance of combat service support forces, military students and historians alike tend to concentrate on combat and combat support units when studying operations, giving only passing attention to the vital work of the logisticians, signalmen, transport troops, and the rest. This is regrettable, for the operations of combat service support units-especially in a global conflict like World War II with its vast distances and varied terrains-have much to teach us about modern warfare, lessons that remain of surpassing importance to our profession. The Medical Department: Medical Service in the European Theater of Operations supports the proposition that the experience of medical personnel in war directly stimulates advances in medical science. More importantly, it demonstrates that the organization of health care in the combat zones, including evacuation of the wounded, control of disease among troops and civilian populations, and care of prisoners of war, contributed directly to the Allied victory. The exploits of the doctors, corpsmen, and medical support units provide a model for the planning and organization of medical support in today's Army. This volume continues a subseries begun in 1966 with the study of medical support of the Army in the Mediterranean Theater. The Center of Military History will soon complete this project with the publication of a similar study of the very different challenges faced by the Medical Department in the Pacific.

Download or read book Fighting for Life written by Albert E. Cowdrey and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cowdrey tells the remarkable story of how American units developed and implemented new technology under dire pressures, succeeding so brilliantly that World War II became the first American war in which more men died in combat than of disease. Penicillin brought the antibiotic revolution to the battlefield, air evacuation plucked the wounded from jungles and deserts, and a unique system brought blood, still fresh from America, to our soldiers all over the world. Surgeons working just behind the front lines stabilized the worst cases, while physicians and public health experts suppressed epidemics and cured exotic diseases. Psychiatrists, nurses and medics all performed heroic feats amidst unspeakable conditions. Together, these men and women improvised medical miracles on the battlefield that could not have been imagined by practitioners in peacetime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking and comprehensive order of battle for German ground troops in WWII, from the invasion of Poland to the final defeat in Berlin. An indispensable reference work for Second World War scholars and enthusiasts, German Ground Forces of World War II captures the continuously changing character of Nazi ground forces throughout the conflict. For the first time, readers can follow the career of every German division, corps, army, and army group as the German armed forces shifted units to and from theaters of war. Organized by sections including Theater Commands, Army Groups, Armies, and Corps Commands, it presents a detailed analysis of each corresponding order of battle for every German field formation above division. This innovative resource also describes the orders of battle of the myriad German and Axis satellite formations assigned to security commands throughout occupied Europe and the combat zones, as well as those attached to fortress commands and to the commanders of German occupation forces across Europe. An accompanying narrative describes the career of each field formation and includes the background and experience of many of their most famous commanding officers.

Book German Northern Theater of Operations 1940 1945 Illustrated Edition

Download or read book German Northern Theater of Operations 1940 1945 Illustrated Edition written by Earl Ziemke and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 23 maps and 31 illustrations] This volume describes two campaigns that the Germans conducted in their Northern Theater of Operations. The first they launched, on 9 April 1940, against Denmark and Norway. The second they conducted out of Finland in partnership with the Finns against the Soviet Union. The latter campaign began on 22 June 1941 and ended in the winter of 1944-45 after the Finnish Government had sued for peace. The scene of these campaigns by the end of 1941 stretched from the North Sea to the Arctic Ocean and from Bergen on the west coast of Norway, to Petrozavodsk, the former capital of the Karelo-Finnish Soviet Socialist Republic. It faced east into the Soviet Union on a 700-mile-long front, and west on a 1,300-mile sea frontier. Hitler regarded this theater as the keystone of his empire, and, after 1941, maintained in it two armies totaling over a half million men. In spite of its vast area and the effort and worry which Hitler lavished on it, the Northern Theater throughout most of the war constituted something of a military backwater. The major operations which took place in the theater were overshadowed by events on other fronts, and public attention focused on the theaters in which the strategically decisive operations were expected to take place. Remoteness, German security measures, and the Russians’ well-known penchant for secrecy combined to keep information concerning the Northern Theater down to a mere trickle, much of that inaccurate. Since the war, through official and private publications, a great deal more has become known. The present volume is based in the main on the greatest remaining source of unexploited information, the captured German military and naval records. In addition a number of the participants on the German side have very generously contributed from their personal knowledge and experience.

Book Medical Supply in World War II

Download or read book Medical Supply in World War II written by United States. Army. Medical Department and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disruption of the national economy and the delay in delivery of military supplies which developed during World War I convinced Congress of the wisdom of industrial preparedness. The National Defense Act of 1920 charged the Assistant Secretary of War with the 'supervision of the procurement of all military supplies and other business of the War Department pertaining thereto and the assurance of adequate provision for the mobilization of materiel and industrial organizations essential to war-time needs.' The italicized phrase conveyed authority for the far-reaching procurement planning program which began in 1920 and continued until our entrance into World War II.
