Book East Midlands English

Download or read book East Midlands English written by Natalie Braber and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume will provide a comprehensive yet accessible description of East Midlands English, an area of neglect in linguistic research. Existing publications, which aggregate the findings of earlier surveys and more recent localised studies presenting an overview of regional speech in the UK, are either lacking up-to-date research data from the East Midlands or simply ignore the region. A coordinated survey of dialects of the East Midlands was part of the Survey of English Dialects (SED) in the 1950s. This data is now over sixty years old and focuses almost exclusively on broad rural dialect speakers. This book will fill the knowledge and literature gaps by comparing vernacular speech in different urban and rural locations in the East Midlands, and examining whether the East Midlands is a 'transition zone' between the North and South. Recordings held by the British Library will be used, and will be supplemented with recordings made with local speakers. Language in the East Midlands is distinctive and there is considerable regional variety, for instance, between speech in the major urban centres of Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Bringing out this regional variation will also improve our wider understanding of language variation in English. The concept of the East Midlands in itself is not a clear one, and this volume aims to address such issues and to examine what makes the East Midlands an area of itself and what this area includes.

Book The Geology of England and Wales

Download or read book The Geology of England and Wales written by P. J. Brenchley and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of 'The Geology of England and Wales' is considerably expanded from its predecessor, reflecting the increase in our knowledge of the region, and particularly of the offshore areas. Forty specialists have contributed to 18 chapters, which cover a time range from 700 million years ago to 200 million years into the future. A new format places all the chapters in approximately temporal order. Both offshore and economic geology now form an integral part of appropriate chapters.

Book Key Issues in Petroleum Geology

Download or read book Key Issues in Petroleum Geology written by F. John Gregory and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2007 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a compilation of 17 seminal papers, taken from various Geological Society Special Publications and the Journal of the Geological Society, on the use and application of stratigraphy in petroleum geology over the last 20 years. The volume focuses on case studies in fundamental stratigraphy, applied and integrated stratigraphy and alternative methods of stratigraphy. The book is introduced with an original scientific and historical review of the subject: all papers are set in context with both the benefits of the techniques and some of the short-comings highlighted. By compiling these papers, commercial stratigraphers John Gregory, Philip Copestake and Julian Pearce have created a volume intended for a wide readership. However, it is of particular relevance for the training of undergraduate students studying courses on petroleum geology, basin development and sequence stratigraphy as well as for all postgraduate students working in petroleum-related scientific fields. It is also intended as a volume of general use for geoscientists entering the petroleum industry, as well as current workers requiring an overview.

Book Geological Hazards in the UK

Download or read book Geological Hazards in the UK written by D.P. Giles and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK is perhaps unique globally in that it presents the full spectrum of geological time, stratigraphy and associated lithologies within its boundaries. With this wide range of geological assemblages comes a wide range of geological hazards, whether they be geophysical (earthquakes, effects of volcanic eruptions, tsunami, landslides), geotechnical (collapsible, compressible, liquefiable, shearing, swelling and shrinking soils), geochemical (dissolution, radon and methane gas hazards) or georesource related (coal, chalk and other mineral extraction). An awareness of these hazards and the risks that they pose is a key requirement of the engineering geologist. The Geological Society considered that a Working Party Report would help to put the study and assessment of geohazards into the wider social context, helping the engineering geologist to better communicate the issues concerning geohazards in the UK to the client and the public. This volume sets out to define and explain these geohazards, to detail their detection, monitoring and management and to provide a basis for further research and understanding.

Book Mineral and Thermal Groundwater Resources

Download or read book Mineral and Thermal Groundwater Resources written by M. Albu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it not generally believed that our town is a healthy place . . . a place highly com mended on this score both for the sick andfor the healthy? . . And then these Baths - the so-called 'artery' of the town, or the 'nerve centre' . . . Do you know what they are in reality, these great and splendid and glorious Baths that have cost so much money? . . A most serious danger to health! All that filth up in Melledal, where there's such an awful stench - it's all seeping into the pipes that lead to the pump-room! Henrik Ibsen, An Enemy of the People, 1882 Henrik Ibsen gave the 'truth about mineral water' more than 100 years ago in An Enemy of the People. His examples came not from the decadent bathing spas of Bohemia or Victorian Britain, but from the very edge of polite society, subarctic Norway! His masterpiece illustrates the central role that groundwaters and, in particular, mineral waters have played in the history of humanity: their economic importance for towns, their magnetism for pilgrims searching for cures, the political intrigues, the arguments over purported beneficent or maleficent health effects and, finally, their contami nation by anthropogenic activity, in Ibsen's case by wastes from a tannery. This book addresses the occurrence, properties and uses of mineral and thermal groundwaters. The use of these resources for heating, personal hygiene, curative and recreational purposes is deeply integrated in the history of civilization.
