Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of New England The Embargo Act of 1807 and the War of 1812 checked our commerce, and the con sequent lack of manufactured goods led merchants to invest their idle capital in manufacturing. Water rights were secured at the falls of our large rivers, and dams were built. Rows of factories and streets of tenements soon followed. Thus the cities of Lowell, Lawrence, Manchester, Lewiston, and Holyoke sprang into existence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Other parts of the country can raise far larger crops of various kinds, such as corn, wheat, and oats, but New England is unrivalled as the place to raise men. Its famous sons and daughters have conferred on it a great attraction; and in our travels, viewing the farms and factories, the forests and waterways, the mountains, the rural towns, and the big cities, we Shall often pause to visit the homes or the birthplaces of some of the worthies of the past whose names the Whole nation treasures. Book Easy Lessons in Geography and History

Download or read book Easy Lessons in Geography and History written by Joseph Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Easy Lessons in Geography and History: Designed for the Use of the Younger Classes in the New England Schools The work he prepared on this plan, was of very humble pretensions, it having been no part of the author's design to give a complete system, in an abridged form, of the subjects to which it relates. It was simply what it pro fessed to bow-easy Lessons in Geography and History; designed not to be a substitute for other works of the kind, but rather to serve as an introduction to others. As it respects the present edition, which, as I it is stereotyped, is intended to be of a per manent form, the author trusts that it will be found to be an improvement on the former editions. The whole work has been re-written and considerably enlarged, and the catecheti cal form, which was at first adopted, has been exchanged for the familiar conversation, or the continued narrative, accompanied with questions, either interspersed through thework, or, as in the case with the Second Part, placed at the bottom of the page. These changes, though they may not lessen the labor of the teacher, will, it is believed, render the book more attractive to the pupil, and thereby facilitate his progress. The teacher is earnestly requested to attend to the directions which will be found scattered in various parts of the book; as, otherwise, the design of the author will be, in a great measure, frustrated. He is particularly anxious that the method he has recommended, in regard to the use of maps and the black board, should be tested by a fair experiment, wherever this book may be used. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways of New England: Including the States of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine All the volumes in this series are chiefly concerned With country life, especially that which is typical and picturesque. To the traveller, no life is more interest ing, and yet there is none with which it is so difficult to get into close and unconventional contact. Ordinarily, we catch only casual glimpses. For this reason I have wandered much on rural byways, and lodged most Of the time at Village hotels or in rustic homes. My trips have taken me to many characteristic and famous regions; but always, both in text and pictures, I have tried to show actual life and nature and to convey some Of the pleasure I experienced in my intimate acquain tance with the people. Book The New England States Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New England States Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New England States This Supplement is designed for use during a portion of one of the closing years of the grammar school course, and is based upon the previous books of the Series. The work accords with the Series in its causal treatment of geography and in the full presentation of more important topics. In harmony with the chapter on Industry and Commerce in the First Book on Home Geography, the social and industrial life of New England have been traced through their development from pioneer days, thus making clear the gradual action of geographic controls, and affording a vantage ground of contrast whereby present geographic conditions may be appreciated. This historical treatment of New England industries and the related consideration of all important cities has made it possible to avoid the uninteresting lists of cities and towns with their products, which comprise so large a part of many state supplements. To the same end, the communities of each state are considered collectively in the physiographic districts and industrial groups to which they belong, thus avoiding useless repetition and leaving a series of clear impressions which will abide with the pupil.
