This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Commerce and Industry The Geography of Commerce and Industry has been prepared to meet the needs of eighth grade pupils and those who enter high school. It recognizes the dearth of reference works on many of the subjects treated, and has given the leading industries such treatment as to make each chap ter a unit. The dependence of industries upon geographical conditions, the rela tion of man to his environment, and the effect of commerce upon civiliza tion are clearly shown. The industrial life of our own country is fully treated, and then the relation of the United States to other countries, and of these to each other, are shown. Book The Geography of Commerce Industry

Download or read book The Geography of Commerce Industry written by R. S. Bridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Commerce Industry The book is planned for a three-years course. First year: Chapters I-XV inclusive. Second year: Chapters XVI-XXX inclusive. Third year: Chapters XXXI-XLI. In the first year we deal with general principles. In the second year we apply these principles to a detailed study of the practical questions connected with the geography of the British Isles. In the third year we have tried to work out the subject by considering the various countries of the world not as so many separate units to be treated "regionally" one by one, but rather as parts of a wider organic whole which can be studied with more advantage by groups based upon their relation with the world's great trade routes. The chapters have been so arranged that they can be taken in groups (e.g. Chapters VII-XII deal with transport). Thus groups may be omitted or reversed in order if necessary. In this way by judicious selection a two-years course can be planned which will give the student a sound working knowledge of the subject without omitting too much detail. The Questions have been framed to stimulate the reasoning powers of the student and to ensure a thorough study of the atlas, which is the basis of all sound geographical work. Any good cheap atlas, such as Bartholomew's Comparative Atlas, will do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Complete Geography Classic Reprint

Download or read book Complete Geography Classic Reprint written by Alex Everett Frye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Geography Commerce. A work on geography that seeks to lay a broad basis for the study of nations must throw a strong search-light upon their commercial relations. Commerce and the related industries take a leading place in this book, - those of our own country being illustrated by twenty-two colored maps prepared expressly for this work. The intelligent study of a country's natural resources must be based on knowledge of its physical features. For this reason the surface-forms and the climate of the various parts of the world receive full treatment in the text, the maps and the pictures. The natural regions of the United States are made to serve as a basis for the comparative study of other lands. Order of Lessons. Though most teachers using this book will doubtless present the lessons in the order in which they appear, yet those who wish to complete the study of the United States in detail, before showing the broader relations of our country to other lands, can readily do so. The work is so arranged that pupils can go directly from the early lessons on the physical features and resources of our country (pages 30 to 52) to the study of its people, its government and its industries (pages 123 et seq). Book Industrial Commercial Geography of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Commercial Geography of the United States Classic Reprint written by Levi Clyde Rusmisel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial-Commercial Geography of the United States This book is not a technical treatise upon the industries discussed, but simply an attempt to describe, in a clear and simple way. some of the every-day features, as well as some of the unusual things, that belong to these industries. I have attempted to keep constantly in view the human elements of the stories. At the same time, the leading thought has been to emphasize the importance of these activities, as carried on in the United States. The student is free to investigate their existence in other countries should he desire to do so. The nations that control the world arc those which lead industrially, for this is an industrial age. Perhaps ninety per cent, of our pupils will enter some form of industrial life, as the whole world is united by a network of commerce and industry. The study of the great industries is the surest way to obtain a practical knowledge of any country. Commercial Geography is a study of the centralization of industry, and has become one of the most essential branches in our schools. The most valuable stenographer is not simply the most speedy shorthand writer, but the one who can, by reason of her general knowledge, make the most intelligent and accurate transcript with reasonable speed. The best-salaried accountant is not alone the finest penman or most rapid calculator, but the one who is most familiar with the sources of supply, process of manufacture, and cost of the common commodities with which he has to reckon. Likewise, the most successful business man is not the narrow-minded tradesman, but the broad-gauged, calculating man of affairs, whose knowledge of the world's great industries gives him power to cope with the problems of business life. Download or read book New Complete Geography Classic Reprint written by Matthew Fontaine Maury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Complete Geography We have decided to teach these features objectively on a plan that has been highly commended. For instance. Instead of devoting two or three pages of text to the origin of mountains. A subject in which the average child takes no interest, we give in the general presentation of the physical geography of the earth four pictures of mountains, and under each picture give a brief description of the origin and character of the formation. The same course has been followed with reference to other physical features. The pupil will read these descriptions because of his interest in the picture, and will remember them for life because of their association with it. Commercial and Industrial Geography. - A leading feature of this book is the treatment of industrial and commercial geography. In actual life, it is a knowledge of the countries of the earth, and of the people who inhabit them, of their resources and industries, their cities and commercial relations, that one needs for practical business purposes, or even for an intelligent appreciation of the contents of the daily newspapers. Industrial Illustrations. - In carrying out this plan we have been engaged for three years past in collecting from all parts of the world industrial pictures - photographs showing machinery in actual operation, and under these we have placed descriptions which give in a few words a clear idea of the process of manufacture. We have distributed these throughout the book in such a way as to identify each industry with some state or country where it is especially prominent. We believe that this plan will awaken present interest and prove of permanent value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 934 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial and Commercial Geography A group of people can only prosper, increase and grow powerful when their environment furnishes them an abundance of food and of materials for making appliances to supply the other necessities of existence. Examine them as we may, we find that every want of man, whether Eskimo or banker, is a desire for one of these six classes of goods: food, clothes, house or shelter, fuel, luxuries, and tools and materials of industry which enable him to produce and handle the others. So nearly universal are these wants that practically all men have all six classes of goods. Even savages have luxuries in the form of toys, ornaments, and musical instruments. All these materials for a living come directly or indirectly out of the soil or crust of the earth. The man in a ship at sea or in a steel sky-scraper in a modern city gets his sustenance from the soil just as surely as does the farmer who takes potatoes from the furrow. Each particular method by which a man gets some useful commodity leads to an industry Often of world wide distribution. To understand the way the human race turns the earth into its home, we have but to study the various industries by which groups of men achieve their living. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of Commerce: A Text-Book This book involves two points of view: physical geography (physiography), and the activities of men and organizations of men. This makes necessary the union of two phases of thought, often treated as unrelated, one dealing with physical science, the other with economic affairs. The balance between these has been sought in the interpretation of commercial life as dependent upon physical surroundings. This, it is conceived, should be the method for the study of the geographical basis of commerce. If commercial geography is to serve its true ends in education, it must be primarily geography, not a mere aggregation of commercial data. The unrelated facts of commerce have slight educational value; they should be made to illustrate some underlying principle, to make clear a natural law, to stand in relation to the great stream of causes and effects. For the purposes of introductory study as outlined in the present work, facts should be taken with a certain largeness of view, and will have their highest utility in indicating relative conditions at a particular time. The actual amount of the wheat crop in bushels or of the coal output in tons for a given year is of little significance, unless comparison is made with similar data for previous years, also with the statistics of population and with data for other countries. Thus is obtained a view of the relative increase and the relation of the commodity or industry in question. Graphic representation to illustrate the increase of a commodity or industry, either absolutely or in relation to population, or in relation to the increase or decrease of other commodities or industries, or in comparison with production in other countries, etc., has vastly more meaning than has any one set of facts.
