It is a scholarly work that appeared in The North American Review, Volume 129. Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804 - May 19, 1864) was an American novelist, Dark Romantic, and short story writer. He was born in 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne" in order to hide this relation. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. Hawthorne published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828; he later tried to suppress it, feeling it was not equal to the standard of his later work. He published several short stories in periodicals, which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at the Boston Custom House and joined Brook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment as consul took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to Concord in 1860. Hawthorne died on May 19, 1864, and was survived by his wife and their three children. -Wikipedia

She even began to give her daughter, who was only six years old, some instruction in drawing. The following extract concerning her husband, from a letter written to her mother, is charmingly significant of her state of mind at this time. "Beauty and the love of it, in him, are the true culmination of the good and true, and there is no beauty to him without these bases. He has perfect dominion over himself in every respect, so that to do the highest, wisest, loveliest thing is not the least effort to him, any more than it is to a baby to be innocent. It is his spontaneous act, and a baby is not more unconscious in its innocence. I never knew such loftiness, so simply borne. Truly this gives us a beautiful insight into their home-life, and Hawthorne himself could not have written a more accurate eulogium. As intimated in the last chapter, we all make our way through life by correcting our daily trespasses, and Hawthorne was no exception to it; but as a mental analysis of this man at his best Mrs. Hawthorne's statement deserves a lasting recognition. "THE HOUSE OF THE SEVEN GABLES" It was not until early frosts and shortening days drove Hawthorne within doors that he again took up his writing, but who can tell how long he had been dreaming over his subject? Within five months, or by the last week of January, "The House of the Seven Gables" was ready for the press. There is no such house in Salem, exactly as he describes it; but an odd, antiquated-looking structure at No. 54 Turner Street is supposed to have served him for the suggestion of it. Even with the broad humor of Bret Harte, even with the broader humor of Artemus Ward and Mark Twain, there is generally present an undercurrent of melancholy, in which pathos and satire are intermingled. There was a touch of it even with the simple-going Cooper and the kindly Washington Irving. Melancholy and pathos, without the humor, are the springs on which all Longfellow's lines are set moving. But in no American writer is to be found the same predominance of weird imagination as in Hawthorne. There was something of it in M. G. Lewis-our Monk Lewis as he came to be called, from the name of a tale which he wrote; but with him, as with many others, we feel that they have been weird because they have desired to be so. They have struggled to achieve the tone with which their works are pervaded. With Hawthorne we are made to think that he could not have been anything else if he would. It is as though he could certainly have been nothing else in his own inner life. We know that such was not actually the case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "MEMOIR of Nathaniel Hawthorne" is hardly the right title to stand conspicuously at the head of this volume. Of the whole volume, the latter part, confining the stories, is the more important; of the former part, criticism is a more important-at least a more bulky-ingredient than biography. I do not mean to say that Mr. Page's criticism is bulk and no better. On the contrary, it is the criticism of a good intelligence, and of an intelligence improved for this purpose by what is evidently a warm natural sympathy with the object to which it applies itself. I think Mr. Page's style might be mended; but he has many sentences which define acutely the genius of the master whom he celebrates. And he is probably right in thinking that there is more of an inner biography to be got out of an attentive and sympathetic study of Hawthorne's writings, taken especially in reference to the circumstances and genesis of each, than out of any other materials we are likely to get. Why, then, say "Memoir?" since it was Hawthorne's expressed wish that no formal memoir of him should be written, and since, if the matter that is usually implied by that word, Mr. Page has little more to add to what 'has been mentioned in the sketch of Mr. Fields, and those portions of the "Note-Books" to which it has been thought fit to give publicity? Why not rather say "Study?" That, I think, would be the truer title. There is a good deal, then, in Mr. Page's preliminary study to give us a closer view of this reserved spectator of society, a better understanding of his genius as one in which a legacy of weird traditions out of the past - that, together with an imagination naturally prone to weird and mystical constructions of nature and man-were united with a first-rate power of positive penetration and practical insight into his fellow creatures. The positive penetration and practical insight are employed in the services of the mystifying imagination, and by them its constructions acquire a strange reasonableness, a reality facing towards both worlds. By long brooding and meditating a mystical conception, in the light of a psychological science that has its roots in real observation, a bridge is built between the world of magic and the supernatural - nay, the world of allegory and abstraction itself - and the world of sense and touch. It is upon this bridge that the creations of Hawthorne's genius dance with those gestures, and that reality in strangeness, which so haunt and impress the imagination. Besides seizing clearly on this particular point, the present essayist is interesting throughout in his observations on Hawthorne's ways of work, and the action and reaction of his genius and its successive surroundings. Of the stories collected from magazines, and brought together for the first time for English readers in the other part of the volume, 'Mother Rigby's Pipe' is an entertaining instance of the writer's witch-wife vein in story-telling, applied to a purpose of rather sweeping sarcasm against his kind; 'A Virtuoso's Collection' is a capital piece of ingenious historical inventory, showing an extreme readiness in marshalling the resources of knowledge and memory on a fancy parade ; the Canal Boat is quite in Hawthorne's. finest vein of character and landscape description: they all, it is needless to say, bespeak one of the masters who in his English, has seemed classical with the most case, who has had his thought or image the most clearly before him for as mystical as it might be, and found with the least uncertainty the word to fit it with the most precision and grace. -The Fortnightly Review, Volume 19 [1873]
