Book Proposals Relating to Parliamentary Reform

Download or read book Proposals Relating to Parliamentary Reform written by Hugh Edward Egerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proposals Relating to Parliamentary Reform: A Sketch of the History of the Question Since 1832 It cannot be attempted here to trace the manner in which the apathy of voters and the encroachments of individuals, together with the exercise of the royal prerogative in selecting and omitting boroughs to return members, tended to narrow the limits of the constituent bodies, nor can any arguments be founded upon what obtained under a wholly different condition of things. The above facts are merely adduced to show that whether wise or unwise the abolition of nomination boroughs cannot fairly be charged as a measure revolutionary in character. Book The Politics of Parliamentary Procedure

Download or read book The Politics of Parliamentary Procedure written by Kari Palonen and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, parliament as a political institution does not enjoy the best reputation. This book aims to recover less known political resources of the parliamentary mode of proceeding. The parliamentary procedure relies on regulating debates in a fair way and on constructing opposed perspectives on the agenda items. The British House of Commons provides the closest historical approximation for the parliamentary ideal type of politics. This book deals with the formation and conceptual change in the Westminster procedure, based on the way they are interpreted in the tracts on procedure. The tracts illustrate the changing parliamentary self-understanding from the 1570s to the present and the growing political role of procedural disputes. The parliamentary style of politics, as discussed in the tracts, can be divided into two genres: the politics of agenda-setting and the politics of debate. The book analyses their formation and overall conceptual change as well as the procedural responses to the increasingly scarce parliamentary time from the period after the 1832 parliamentary reform. It insists that in spite of claims on urgency and on government’s leadership the procedural resources of the House of Commons contribute to maintaining the debate-centred parliamentary style of politics.

Book The Three Reforms of Parliament

Download or read book The Three Reforms of Parliament written by William Heaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Reforms of Parliament: A History, 1830-1885 This volume has grown out of a. Lecture which I delivered last winter in several towns of the North of England. I soon found, as my reading on the' subject advanced, that I had very much more to say than could be comprised within the limits of a single lecture; and, besides, the subject itself so increased in interest to me, that I could not be satisfied till I had set down, in writing, not only what I had gathered from books, but also some of my own recollections and reflec tions. Thus, this history rather grew than was made. Under the circumstances, I dare not claim for it that it is exhaustive. It is, in fact, an extended lecture. But my aim in pre paring it has been to trace the successive steps, and the struggles, by which the existing repre sentation of the people in Parliament has been reached; and likewise to show how each step in Parliamentary Reform has been followed byeconomic and social reforms of scarcely less value. Of course, this latter part of my inten tion could be only partially accomplished by me or by any one at this time. I have recorded some of the results of the first two, ureforms the results of the third and the (so far) greatest Reform must be recorded hereafter by another hand. I envy him who will have to tell the tale. For, grand as is that chapter in' our history which is looked at from a single point of view only in this volume, I believe that the next chapter will be infinitely grander and I am confident that it will both illustrate and confirm those Liberal principles of legislation - I would rather say, those Radical principles - to which I have been attached from my youth up, and which I cherish in ever increasing affection with advancing years.
