Book excerpt: This paper studies the behavior in the neighborhood of the starting point of dynamic systems (solutions of difference or differential equations) whose Jacobians are Metzler matrices. (A Metzler matrix is one whose off-diagonal elements are non-negative.) A new concept, that of first-positivity of a sequence, is introduced; a sequence is first-positive if its first non-zero element is positive. First-positivity holds for a sequence of matrices or vectors if it holds for each component. It is shown that the sequence of powers of a Metzler matrix is first-positive; also, for each position in the matrix (defined by row and column), the number of steps to the first non-zero entry in the sequence is equal to the minimum length of a chain from the row to the column through non-zero entries in the Metzler matrix. From this, it is possible to express (a) the time of first-positivity of a specific component of the solution to a system of difference equations and (b) the order of increase of a specific component of the solution to a system of differential equations in terms of the connectivity properties of the governing matrix, the specification of the positive components of the starting values, and the first-positivity properties of the forcing functions. Book excerpt: The problem to be considered here is the one faced by bargainers who must reach a consensus--i.e., a unanimous decision. Specifically, we will be consid ering n-person games in which there is a set of feasible alternatives, any one of which can be the outcome of bargaining if it is agreed to by all the bargainers. In the event that no unanimous agreement is reached, some pre-specified disagree ment outcome will be the result. Thus, in games of this type, each player has a veto over any alternative other than the disagreement outcome. There are several reasons for studying games of this type. First, many negotiating situations, particularly those involving only two bargainers (i.e., when n = 2), are conducted under essentially these rules. Also, bargaining games of this type often occur as components of more complex processes. In addi tion, the simplicity of bargaining games makes them an excellent vehicle for studying the effect of any assumptions which are made in their analysis. The effect of many of the assumptions which are made in the analysis of more complex cooperative games can more easily be discerned in studying bargaining games. The various models of bargaining considered here will be studied axioma- cally. That is, each model will be studied by specifying a set of properties which serve to characterize it uniquely.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents a collection of results, observations, and examples related to dynamical systems described by linear and nonlinear ordinary differential and difference equations. In particular, dynamical systems that are susceptible to analysis by the Liapunov approach are considered. The naive observation that certain "diagonal-type" Liapunov functions are ubiquitous in the literature attracted the attention of the authors and led to some natural questions. Why does this happen so often? What are the spe cial virtues of these functions in this context? Do they occur so frequently merely because they belong to the simplest class of Liapunov functions and are thus more convenient, or are there any more specific reasons? This monograph constitutes the authors' synthesis of the work on this subject that has been jointly developed by them, among others, producing and compiling results, properties, and examples for many years, aiming to answer these questions and also to formalize some of the folklore or "cul ture" that has grown around diagonal stability and diagonal-type Liapunov functions. A natural answer to these questions would be that the use of diagonal type Liapunov functions is frequent because of their simplicity within the class of all possible Liapunov functions. This monograph shows that, although this obvious interpretation is often adequate, there are many in stances in which the Liapunov approach is best taken advantage of using diagonal-type Liapunov functions. In fact, they yield necessary and suffi cient stability conditions for some classes of nonlinear dynamical systems.
