Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1944 the Canadian Social Science Research Council, with the financial support of the Rockefeller Foundation, organized a series of studies of northern Canada to stimulate public interest in the development of the region and to provide a background for more extensive investigation. In The New North-West, this series of articles and others dealing with northwestern Canada have been brought together in one volume, and the result is a comprehensive description and analysis of the western half of the Canadian northland. The book contains twelve parts. They discuss respectively: administration, Mackenzie and Yukon domesdays (two parts describing in detail the geographical setting and plan of settlements in these areas), mineral industry, fur production, northern agriculture, transportation, health conditions and services, education, the Eskimos and the new north-west. The last section is a bibliography which covers the whole of northern Canada and lists about four hundred selected titles in alphabetical order. It will be of interest to both American and Canadian readers.

Book Boys in the Pits

Download or read book Boys in the Pits written by Robert Gordon McIntosh and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning early in the nineteenth century, thousands of Canadian boys, some as young as eight, laboured underground - driving pit ponies along narrow passageways, manipulating ventilation doors, and helping miners cut and load coal at the coalface to produce the energy that fuelled Canada's industrial revolution. Boys died in the mines in explosions and accidents but they also organised strikes for better working conditions but were instead expelled from the mines and lost their jobs.Boys in the Pits shows the rapid maturity of the boys and their role in resisting exploitation. In what will certainly be a controversial interpretation of child labour, Robert McIntosh recasts wage-earning children as more than victims, showing that they were individuals who responded intelligently and resourcefully to their circumstances.Boys in the Pits is particularly timely as, despite the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, accepted by the General assembly in 1989, child labour still occurs throughout the world and continues to generate controversy. McIntosh provides an important new perspective from which to consider these debates, reorienting our approach to child labour, explaining rather than condemning the practice. Within the broader social context of the period, where the place of children was being redefined as - and limited to - the home, school, and playground, he examines the role of changing technologies, alternative sources of unskilled labour, new divisions of labour, changes in the family economy, and legislation to explore the changing extent of child labour in the mines.Robert McIntosh is employed at the National Archives of Canada.

  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Game in the Garden written by George Colpitts and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what is now western Canada, humans have long used wildlife in order to survive their surroundings, better understand their natural world, and form aspects of their identity. This book identifies the imaginative use of wild animals in early western society to explore a previously neglected avenue of social history. By examining grassroots conservation activities, early slaughter rituals, iconographic traditions, and subsistence strategies, Colpitts clearly demonstrates how western attitudes to wild animals changed according to subsistence and economic needs - through the fur trade, game and sport hunting, and farming - and how wildlife helped to shape the social relationships of people in western Canada. It is a thought-provoking work that will appeal to environmental historians, Native studies specialists, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts.
