Book The Genera of Fungi Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Genera of Fungi Classic Reprint written by Frederic Edward Clements and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genera of Fungi The first of these has been the relative exhaustion of fields long-tilled at home and the consequent tendency to shift the basis of criteria, with the result that sections have been changed into genera and genera into families. A second feature has been due to the increasing exploitation Of the Tropics, which has disclosed a large amount Of novel material, in certain orders especially. Of even greater interest and significance has been the work Of the revisionists in testing the foundations of the subject and in removing or refashioning faulty units. The chief worker in the arduous task of revalu ating type specimens and other authentic material has been Hoehnel, but a large part in this has also been taken by Bresadola, Theissen, Sydow, Petrak and Weese, to mention only the most active. Essential as this has been to the development of mycology, it was inevitable that it should reveal great differences as to the facts and even greater ones of interpretation. Book Handbook of British Fungi

Download or read book Handbook of British Fungi written by M. C. Cooke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of British Fungi: With Full Descriptions of All the Species, and Illustrations of the Genera Thirty-five years ago one of the volumes of the "English Flora" contained full descriptions of all the species then known of British Fungi. Prior to this several floras, and especially Mr. Samuel Gray's "Natural Arrangement" and Withering's "Arrangement," included the fungi; but it was left to the Rev. M. J. Berkeley to collect the materials, and eliminate from them, a Mycological Flora of the British Islands. During the thirty-five years that have elapsed since the appearance of the last complete Mycologic Flora, no attempt has been made to revise it, to incorporate species since discovered, and to bring it up to the standard of modern science. No apology, therefore, is necessary for the present effort, since all will admit that the want of such a manual has long been felt, and this work makes its appearance under the advantage that it seeks to occupy a place which has long been vacant. It was my intention at first to have added an introduction, treating of the structure and affinities of the different orders and genera included in the present volume, with an explanation of my own views as to the classification adopted, but as the work proceeded it so far exceeded the dimensions originally estimated, that it was found impossible to do justice to this portion of the subject here, and the "Introduction" has been postponed, in the hope that hereafter it may appear as a separate volume. It may suffice to state that, in the face of the bewildering chaos of new genera which have of late been proposed on the Continent, especially for Ascomycetous forms, I have endeavoured to avoid, as much as possible, encumbering these pages with a nomenclature often fanciful, seldom necessary, and which may, at best, be regarded as transitional. Book excerpt: The fifth order of the natural kingdom is made up of an estimated 1.5 million species of fungi, found in every habitat type worldwide. The Book of Fungi takes 600 of the most remarkable fleshy fungi from around the world and reproduces each at its actual size, in full colour, and accompanied by a scientific explanation of its distribution, habitat, association, abundance, growth form, spore colour and edibility. Location maps give at-a-glance indications of each species known global distribution, and specially commissioned engravings show different fruitbody forms and provide the vital statistics of height and diameter. Theres a place, too, for readers to discover the more bizarre habits of fungi from the predator that hunts its prey with lassos to the one that entices sows by releasing the pheromones of a wild boar. Mushrooms, morels, puffballs, toadstools, truffles, chanterelles fungi from habitats spanning the poles and the tropics, from the highest mountains to our own gardens are all on display in this definitive work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Fungi: Phycomycetes and Ustilagineae What is a fungus? This question naturally suggests itself as first claiming attention in a work treating exclusively of the fungi, yet in reality the answer can only be clearly understood after some insight has been gained of the peculiarities of structure and mode of life of the fungi as a group, and also of their origin and relationship with other groups of the vegetable kingdom, because a definition of any group consists of the most pronounced morphological and physiological peculiarities possessed generally by its component members; nevertheless, one or two of the leading characters may be given at this stage. Chlorophyll, the green colouring matter so general in the vegetable kingdom, is entirely absent from fungi, and as chloro phyll is an indispensable factor in enabling plants to utilize inorganic matter as food, it follows that fungi cannot. Assimilate inorganic food, but are entirely dependent on organic matter for food, and may be divided into two groups, depending on the condition in which organic matter is used as food; those that obtain their food material from dead organic matter are called saprophytes, such are the fungi growing on B. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain and Easy Account on British Fungi: With Descriptions of the Esculent and Poisonous Species, Details of the Principles of Scientific Classification, and a Tabular Arrangement of Orders and Genera It is sometimes necessary for a writer to give some reasons for inflicting a new work upon the public, while treatises on the same subject are already in print; but from this necessity I am in the present instance absolved by the fact that no popular work on this branch of Botany exists, or, to my knowledge, has hitherto been attempted. With all its failings, therefore, this effort has the merit of novelty to commend it, and I trust it will hereafter be found of utility also. The difficulties to be encountered in describing, with as little technicality as possible, the different species of esculent fungi - so that persons unacquainted therewith may discriminate them - have been much diminished by the liberality with which the publisher has illustrated this work. Book Researches on Fungi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Researches on Fungi Classic Reprint written by A. H. Reginald Buller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on Fungi These pages contain a contribution to the physiology, mor phology, and physics of reproduction in the Hymenomycetes, and also a record of some observations upon the discharge of spores of 'ascomycetes and of Pilobolus. Naturally many problems have been left unsolved, but I hope that the new data obtained will give an added interest to some of our commonest plants. The delicate adaptations of structure to function, as revealed by a study of the fruit-body of a Mushroom, a Coprinus comatus, or a Polyporus, have provided me with no small cause for wonder ment and delight, and they seem well worthy of the attention of all those who desire to understand more fully the vegetable world by which they are surrounded. The value of the more purely physical work must be left to physicists to decide. How ever, as showing how closely the various branches of science may be knit together, it is not without interest that the first direct i test of Stokes' Law for the fall of microsc0pic spheres in air has been carried out with the help of a lowly Cryptogam. Effort has been made to avoid duplication of matter contained in that volume. Abundant citations to the more important papers are given, sufficient, it is believed, to put the student in touch with the literature of the subject. While many parasites not yet known in the United States are briefly mentioned, especially the more important ones or those which are likely to invade America, no attempt has been made to list all of these. N on - parasitic groups closely related to those that are parasitic have been introduced in the keys merely to give a larger perspective to the student. Effort has been made to give at least one illustration of each genus that is of importance in the United States. Book Introduction to the Study of Fungi

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of Fungi written by M. C. Cooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Fungi: Their Organography, Classification, and Distribution, for the Use of Collectors The Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany, published by Berkeley in 1857, was for a long time the only volume, in English, which could introduce the inquiring student to a systematic knowledge of Fungi. Later on, this work was discovered to be insufficient, inasmuch as it was more suited to the requirements of an advanced student than an inquirer; so that the field was left open for a more popular and ele mentary work, which, under the title of Fungi their Nature, Influence, and Uses, appeared in 1875, subsequently passing through several editions. The rapid advance in knowledge of the life-history and development of these organisms during the past ten years, and especially the large scheme of classification carried out by Professor Saccardo, ' made it essential that, in order to keep pace with the times, a guide and introduction should be prepared and published for the use Of students, which, whilst not superseding the volume of 1875 as a popular instructor, should treat the subject more after the manner of a text-book, adapted to the illustration of recent discoveries, and an explanation of the methods of classification. The following pages are the result of an effort to supply an acknow ledged want, which I have executed under the impression that it is probably my last contribution of any importance to British Mycology. Download or read book Mushrooms and Other Common Fungi Classic Reprint written by Flora W. Patterson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mushrooms and Other Common Fungi To judge from the statements of early authors, for many centuries Wild mushrooms have been eagerly collected and eaten, especially in Germany, France, and Italy. Perhaps the only recorded voice of absolute protest came from the' ancient Hindus, Who considered those Who ate mushrooms, Whether springing from the ground or growing on a tree, fully equal in guilt to the slayers of Brahmins. Although early history records the use of mushrooms and the high esteem in Which they Were held by the ancients, it is true that their nutritive value has been greatly exaggerated and is not high and that they are not as life sustaining as meat, in spite of the frequent assertions of enthusiastic mycophagists to the contrary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Fungus Flora: Agaricaceae It conveys the idea that species are much more sharply defined than proves to be the case, when the entire Fungus Flora of Europe is included. In all large genera common to European countries, the continental species can be sandwiched between British species. Even in large genera there are as a rule not more than eight or ten primary differentiating specific characters present, and it is the constant correla tion of two or three of those primary characters that constitute a species, as understood at the present day. If two British species are characterised respectively by the marks 1, 2, and 3, 4, then we find that two continental species belonging to the same genus will be indicated by the characters 1, 3, and 2, 4, respectively. Primary specific characters should include only those features that are constant, and not materially modified by geographical or exceptional local conditions as to environment, etc., and such alone should constitute a specific diagnosis. Trivial or local characteristics should follow the essential diagnosis as a rider. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
