Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the creation of Dolly the sheep, the world's most famous clone, triggered an enormous amount of discussion about human cloning, in Dolly Mixtures the anthropologist Sarah Franklin looks beyond that much-rehearsed controversy to some of the other reasons why the iconic animal's birth and death were significant. Building on the work of historians and anthropologists, Franklin reveals Dolly as the embodiment of agricultural, scientific, social, and commercial histories which are, in turn, bound up with national and imperial aspirations. Dolly was the offspring of a long tradition of animal domestication, as well as the more recent histories of capital accumulation through selective breeding, and enhanced national competitiveness through the control of biocapital. Franklin traces Dolly's connections to Britain's centuries-old sheep and wool markets (which were vital to the nation's industrial revolution) and to Britain's export of animals to its colonies—particularly Australia—to expand markets and produce wealth. Moving forward in time, she explains the celebrity sheep's links to the embryonic cell lines and global bioscientific innovation of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first. Franklin combines wide-ranging sources—from historical accounts of sheep-breeding, to scientific representations of cloning by nuclear transfer, to popular media reports of Dolly's creation and birth—as she draws on gender and kinship theory as well as postcolonial and science studies. She argues that there is an urgent need for more nuanced responses to the complex intersections between the social and the biological, intersections which are literally reshaping reproduction and genealogy. In Dolly Mixtures, Franklin uses the renowned sheep as an opportunity to begin developing a critical language to identify and evaluate the reproductive possibilities that post-Dolly biology now faces, and to look back at some of the important historical formations that enabled and prefigured Dollys creation.

Book excerpt: A sharp-edged satire of contemporary motherhood from a comic novelist on the rise In the hip haven of Portland, Oregon, a pack of unsteady but loyal friends asks what it means to bring babies into an already crowded world. Sarah studies animal behavior at the zoo. She’s well versed in the mating habits of captive animals, and at the same time she’s desperate to mate, to create sweet little offspring of her own. Georgie is busy with a newborn, while her husband, Humble, finds solace in bourbon and televised violence. Dulcet makes a living stripping down in high school gyms to sell the beauty of sex-ed. Nyla is out to save the world while having trouble saving her own teen daughter, who has discovered the world of drugs and the occult. As these friends and others navigate a space between freedom and intimacy, they realize the families they forge through shared experience are as important as those inherited through birth. A smart, edgy and poignantly funny exploration of the complexities of what parenthood means today, Monica Drake's second novel demonstrates that when it comes to babies, we can learn a lot by considering our place in the animal kingdom.

Download or read book The American Stud Book Vol 3 of 3 written by S. D. Bruce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Stud Book, Vol. 3 of 3: Containing Full Pedigrees of All the Imported Thourough-Bred Stallions and Mares, With Their Produce, Including the Arabs, Barbs, and Spanish Horses, From the Earliest Accounts of Racing in America, to the End of the Year 1877; Also, All the Native Mares As was promised in the publication of the first two volumes of the Stud Book, the author now submits the third volume of the american stud book to the public, and avails himself of this occasion to state that he has thought it advisable not to ex clude from its pages those animals associated with racing fami lies which are not strictly thoroughbred; nor has be omitted others, the facts in regard to Whose pedigrees it was impossible to obtain. Of the latter he hopes to secure a more perfect account for subsequent volumes. Having obtained a certain distinction on the turf and in the stud, a degree of interest attaches to them which necessarily leads 'to enquiry as to their true origin, and this desire for information cannot be satisfied if the animals are excluded. In those instances where a pedi gree is inserted of a questionable character, the fact is noted that the reader may be correctly advised. The produce of thoroughbred mares which have been bred to trotting or other stallions are also, as usual, given a place under their dams, in order to preserve a complete history of the mares, the true object of a genealogical work being to furnish informa tion on collateral as well as direct facts.
