Behind them an Old sheep-dog, his soaking paws covered with sand, ran along with his nose to the ground, but carelessly, as if thinking of something else. And then in the rocky gateway the shepherd himself appeared. He was a lean, upright Old man, in a frieze coat that was covered with a web Of tiny drops, velvet trousers tied under the knee, and a wide-awake with a folded blue handkerchief round the brim. One hand was crammed into his belt, the other grasped a beautifully smooth yellow stick. And as he walked, taking his time, he kept up a very soft light whistling, an airy, far-away fluting that sounded mournful and tender. The old dog cut an ancient caper or two and then drew up sharp. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Home Garden The following pages were originally written for small children; as such they appeared in the Coun try Gentleman under the title The Child's Gar den. Gardening is such a big problem I was anxious to make it understandable to the begin ner's mind. Since our entrance into the World's War the knowledge of the Vital importance of food pro duction has led me to put these chapters into book form for children older grown. The fact that flowers occupy some of the space may help to cheer us as we work at the big task of increasing the world's food supply. The wonderful work the Boy Scouts of America are doing to help increase this supply, has, more than any other cause, led me to rewrite these chap ters. Under the' wonderful leadership of my life partner, the Chief Grub Scout, I am sure they will achieve yet greater results. They are wealthy folk, the Elmacotts, and they love their garden and pride themselves on it and hold that in all Sussex no soil can produce finer flowers and sweeter fruit, and though in this year of grace seventeen hundred and three the house, which is the Manor House of the Parish of Home-wood, has no great antiquity, being scarce more than sixty years old, it has about it that completeness, those niceties of detail, the neatness and the order and the well being that are found only in the home which is ruled by a house-proud mistress. And Madame Elmacott is proud of her house, proud of her garden, proud of the flowers that grow in it and above all proud of her stalwart sons, Master Hat and Master Dick, who are at this time with his Grace of Marlborough in Flanders, fighting their country's battles. Book Four Seasons in the Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book Four Seasons in the Garden Classic Reprint written by Eben Eugene Rexford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Come Into the Garden Classic Reprint written by Grace Tabor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Come Into the Garden IT is appropriate to explain that in a book of this character there may be an appearance of inconsistency to the layman in the spelling of plant names. The nomenclature of Bailey's Encyclopcedia of Horticulture has been followed, however, with the exception of the capitaliza tion of the names when they appear apart from their botanical components. Personally, the author believes a page presents a more agree able appearance to the eye when the names of such plants as may be referred to thereon are not treated as proper names; and that it may be read with greater facility and a less disturbed sense of values as a consequence. For those desiring to pursue further reading or study along the lines of any particular chapter, a bibliog raphy of standard works dealing with each chap ter subject will be found at the back of the book, just before the Index. Book The Cross and the Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cross and the Garden Classic Reprint written by Frederick William Norwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross and the Garden Alas! It had never entered into his dream that the serenity of his garden would be broken by the raucous shouts of men, that its peace would be invaded with pain, that the crimson of his choicest flowers would be out-crimsoned by the blood of the most flower-like man he had ever seen. For Joseph had never seen a life that reminded him so much of the flowers in his garden as the life of Jesus of Nazareth. It seemed almost too fair to be truly rooted in this murky and miry world. It seemed to belong to Heaven rather than to earth, it seemed like the promise of what a man ought to be rather than the revelation of what a man could really be. Joseph had watched this flower-like life through the years in Silence and reticence but with growing faith and devotion. When he saw it trampled down under the heels of men, he felt the same indignation, only deeper if possible, as if he had seen them trample down his flowers beneath their feet. In his indignation he was stung out of his reticence he rushed into the midst of the horror and said, Let Him lie among my flowers, He is more worthy to lie there than I. No one else thought of the garden that day but Joseph of Arima thaca who loved it. Long afterwards, when John was writing the story he remembered, and his face was lit Up with a smile as he wrote.
