Book The Game Birds of California

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Game Birds of California: Contribution From the University of California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology In the fall of 1912 it was decided that the staff of the California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology should begin to apply a portion of its knowledge of the vertebrate natural history of the state along practical lines, more particularly in an active effort towards conserving the native fauna. In the course of extended field work throughout California we had been forcibly impressed with the rapid depletion everywhere evident among the game birds and mammals, but at the same time we found reason to believe that a careful study of the situation would reveal some effectual means of retarding this downward trend. After observing the course of legislation for several months during the season of 1913, and recalling the popular indifference we had encountered in various parts of the state toward existing game laws, we had come to the conclusion that however numerous or stringent the game laws might be, they of themselves could not be expected to furnish adequate protection. The people at large must be apprized of the facts, and shown the need for, as well as the most effective means of, conserving our game resources. About this time our plans became known to a Berkeley gentleman who was already intensely interested in any and all agencies for the protection of wild life. It was through the financial aid tendered by this man, whose name I am pledged to withhold, that the beginning of our work along economic lines was made possible. The actual task of writing the present book on the status of the game birds of California was begun on June 1, 1913, when Dr. Harold Child Bryant joined the staff of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology under salary provided as above indicated, and, in collaboration with the director of the museum, devoted his time exclusively to this enterprise. Bryant's services formally terminated on August 1, 1914, when he was called to a position as director of education, publicity and research, under the State Fish and Game Commission. He thereby carried the slogan "Game Conservation through Education" into a sphere of application the scope of which he has been able steadily to enlarge and perfect. The work on the game-bird book was immediately taken up where Bryant had left off, by Mr. Tracy Irwin Storer, and the latter, under salary at first supplied from the anonymous source above alluded to, and later by Miss Annie M. Alexander, has, again with the collaboration of the director of the museum, faithfully and unremittingly labored on the book until its completion at the end of 1916. Book Game Birds Ring Necked Pheasant cover

Download or read book Game Birds Ring Necked Pheasant cover written by Gary Kramer and published by Farcountry Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the words and images of award-winning photographer and writer Gary Kramer, Game Birds: A Celebration of North American Upland Birds takes readers on a visual journey across North America in search of turkey, pheasant, quail, grouse, partridge, ptarmigan, prairie-chickens and the game birds of Hawaii. Among these are two on the brink of extinction, the masked bobwhite and Attwater's prairie-chicken; those that are struggling, such as the Gunnison sage-grouse and lesser prairie-chicken; abundant species that have been introduced from foreign lands including the chukar and ring-necked pheasant; as well as species that are widespread due to successful wildlife management efforts, like the wild turkey. Gary's photographs capture the range and diversity of their beauty and behavior, from the widespread and familiar northern bobwhite to the intricately marked Montezuma quail and the seldom photographed Himalayan snowcock. His compelling narrative is delivered with accuracy; each chapter has been reviewed by the top experts in the field. Containing 256 pages and 384 color photos, this volume is the most ambitious book ever attempted on gallinaceous birds, or as they are more commonly known, game birds. Gary may be the only individual to have ever photographed and published images of all 34 game birds found in the United States and Canada, making this book a milestone achievement. If you are an avid hunter, a serious birder or an armchair reader, Game Birds will provide you with range maps, natural history and conservation status and a photographic insight seldom revealed. Foreword by Howard K. Vincent, President and CEO Pheasants Forever, Inc. and Quail Forever. Includes references, conservation organizations, and dust jacket. This edition of Game Birds features the Ring-Necked Pheasant on the cover. A Wild Turkey cover is also available. The interiors of both books are identical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all recognize the California Quail, with its striking good looks and mellow call notes. Widely distributed along the whole Pacific Coast, it has long been of interest to bird-lovers, sportsmen, ranchers, and wildlife biologists. In early times it was an important food source, and stocks were rapidly depleted by market hunters. Today its populations are being restored through the efforts of both private land-owners and government agencies. This comprehensive report summarizes what is known about the history, biology, and management of the species. It recounts the impact of settlement on quail, it describes the quail's intriguing social life, covey relationships, nesting behavior, and habitat requirements. Males, for example, play an important role in chick-rearing; chemical compounds in food substantially influence the nesting success of females. A major part of this book tells how to provide proper over, food, and drinking water that are needed to increase quail populations, whether for hunting or for observation and enjoyment. The suggestions offered stem from decades of scientific research and practical management effort. Written by a renowned wildlife biologist who worked on the quail for many years, this volume will be the definitive work from both the natural history and game management points of view. It is copiously illustrated with photographs and drawings, and will be of use to anyone who wishes to understand and foster the state bird.
