Book excerpt: This publication, written by two well-known, highly respected Czech entomologists, provides a summary of knowledge on gall midges, which are small flies from the Diptera order. This book covers their biology, occurrence and distribution in European countries, and their importance in agriculture and forestry. The gall midges forming the family Cecidomyiidae are small flies, usually only two millimeters long. They live in various environments and biotopes. In Europe, about 1800 species of gall midges are known. While the life span of adults is very short (usually only few hours), larvae may live several months, and the soil larvae even several years. The larvae of gall midges are either phytophagous (causing galls on various plants), mycophagous and saprophagous (associated with fungi), zoophagous (predators of other flies and small arthropods) or xylophilous (loving wood and woody material). In this book, the gall midge species for each host plant are described and are arranged alphabetically according to their Latingeneric and species name. Zoophagous, mycophagous and freeliving species of gall midges are always placed at the end of there spective section for specific host plant. An important part of this publication is a collection of black and white and colour photos of galls on plants, and many scanning electron-microphotographs, showing the distinguishing morphological features of larvae, pupae and adult gall midges.

Book The Gall Midges of the Neotropical Region

Download or read book The Gall Midges of the Neotropical Region written by Raymond J. Gagné and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gagne's introductory chapters include biographical sketches of those individuals who have contributed most to our knowledge of Neotropical gall midges. He also discusses classification and distribution, external anatomy and biology, and techniques for collecting, rearing, and preparing specimens for study. The heart of the book comprises two chapters. The first presents the midges themselves: identification keys to the genera, a synopsis of each genus and higher taxon, and a list of all known species from South America. The second includes keys and descriptions of galls and other damage caused by the midges, with known hosts.

Book Plant Galls of Europe

Download or read book Plant Galls of Europe written by J. C. Roskam and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on Herbert Buhr's seminal keys of 1964-1965 (Bestimmungstabellen der Gallen (Zoo- und Phytocecidien) an Pflanzen Mittel- und Nordeuropas) and augmented with Houard's 1908-1913 work on Southern Europe (Les Zoocécidies des Plantes d'Europe et du Bassin de la Méditerranée). The authors have updated this with the research of a new generation of cecidologists, significantly expanding our knowledge of plant galls and their distribution. The 9,000 galls and malformations described by Buhr and Houard have been updated and 1,250 new galls described in more recent literature have been added. The nomenclature of both gall inducers and host plants has been updated, information about specific groups of gall inducers has been reviewed, and new insights have been added by a team of specialists. Moreover, they collected distribution data for the whole of Europe and, where available, adjacent areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book brings to light the most recent findings on the biogeography, biodiversity, host plant induction and natural history of gall inducing insects in the Neotropical region. We attempt to summarize the work done so far in the region, promote several syntheses on many aspects such as host induction, host specialization, distribution among the several vegetation types and zones, the origin of super hosts and the mechanisms leading to geographical patterns in their distribution. Furthermore, the book constructs new perspectives for deeper understanding of galling insect evolutionary ecology and biogeopgraphy in the region.

Book Plant Galls of the Western United States

Download or read book Plant Galls of the Western United States written by Ronald A. Russo and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic guide to 536 species of plant galls found west of the Rockies Beautiful and bizarre, plant galls are growths of various shapes, sizes, and colors produced in response to invading organisms. Describing 536 species of galls and their causative agents, Plant Galls of the Western United States explores this unique realm with stunning photos and fascinating information about the life cycles of the organisms involved. Often species-specific, plant galls can be shaped like stars, baskets, clubs, wigs, bowls, and cups, with colors and combinations that stagger the imagination. This richly illustrated field guide examines how galls develop, and their uses, seasonal appearance and growth rate, predators, and defense mechanisms. The “architects” of galls—bacteria, fungi, mites, moths, beetles, flies, midges, and wasps—are explored in depth, and descriptions are paired with illustrations of these gall-inducing organisms and their typical galls. Gall accounts are divided into those that occur on trees, shrubs, and miscellaneous hosts, including native and ornamental plants. The guide contains a useful glossary and a bibliography. Features 536 gall species—including 120 new to science and 232 that have never appeared in a field guide before Examines for the first time more than 90 species from southwestern oak trees Contains more than 150 species from most of the deserts of the western states

Download or read book Plant Galls of Europe 3 Vols written by J. C. Roskam and published by Knnv Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 2202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1964-1965 Herbert Buhr published his 'Bestimmungstabellen der Gallen (Zoo- und Phytocecidien) an Pflanzen Mittel- und Nordeuropas'. These keys were developed in the great tradition of cecidology in Europe. During the second half of the twentieth century a new generation of cecidologists expanded significantly our knowledge of plant galls and their distribution, about doubling the knowledge known before. We concentrated on Buhr's keys, but implemented additions, especially for Southern Europe, from Houard (1908-1913): Les zoocécidies des plantes d'Europe et du bassin de la Méditerranée. The nomenclature of as well gall inducers as host plants has been updated, and information about specific groups of gall inducers has been reviewed and new insights have been given by a team of specialists. To the proxy 9,000 galls and malformations described by Buhr and Houard, we added about 1,250 new galls which have been described in the more recent literature. Moreover, we collected distribution data for total Europe and, if available, adjacent areas. VOLUME I: Abies-Myrrhis VOLUME II: Narcissus-Zygophyllum VOLUME III: References, Plates, Index

Induced by a variety of insects and other organisms and ranging from tiny pimples to bizarre and often very attractive and exquisitely sculptured growths, plant galls are mystery to many people, but they offer a fascinating field of study for both botanists and zoologists. Galls can be found on a very wide range of both woody and herbaceous plants, with over 50 different kinds occurring on Britain's oak trees alone, and there is still much to be learned about even the commonest examples. An introduction to the nature of plant galls and their formation Brief descriptions of some of the organisms that cause or induce galls Superb photographs of just over 200 of the commonest or most conspicuous of Britain's 1,000 or so plant galls, arranged according to their host plants to aid field identification Descriptions of these galls and the life histories of the organisms that cause them
