Book excerpt: "TRB’s Transportation Research Circular E-C185: The Future of TransXML: Workshop Summary is the proceedings of a December 2013 workshop that focused on potential future development and implementation of TransXML. Planning, designing, constructing, and operating transportation systems involve the exchange of large volumes of data. The lack of common data formats to facilitate the exchange of data across different business platforms has been a limiting factor for transportation agencies, vendors, contractors, and other groups. The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) represents a universal structured data transfer methodology that helps facilitate e-business and e-government. XML data structures, or schemas, provide a mechanism to develop and adopt common formats for data exchange." -- Publisher's note.

Book XML Databases and the Semantic Web

Download or read book XML Databases and the Semantic Web written by Bhavani Thuraisingham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-03-27 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient access to data, sharing data, extracting information from data, and making use of the information have become urgent needs for today's corporations. With so much data on the Web, managing it with conventional tools is becoming almost impossible. New tools and techniques are necessary to provide interoperability as well as warehousing between multiple data sources and systems, and to extract information from the databases. XML Databases and the Semantic Web focuses on critical and new Web technologies needed for organizations to carry out transactions on the Web, to understand how to use the Web effectively, and to exchange complex documents on the Web. This reference for database administrators, database designers, and Web designers working in tandem with database technologists covers three emerging technologies of significant impact for electronic business: Extensible Markup Language (XML), semi-structured databases, and the semantic Web. The first two parts of the book explore these emerging technologies. The third part highlights the implications of these technologies for e-business. Overall, the book presents a comprehensive view of critical technologies for the Web in general and XML in particular. The semantic Web, XML, and semi-structured databases are still relatively new technologies that integrate many other technologies. As these technologies and integration of these advances mature, we can expect to see progress in the semantic web. The information contained in XML Databases and the Semantic Web is essential to the future success of effective e-business on the Web.

Book XML

Download or read book XML written by Christopher Adam Meloy and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: XML is quickly being utilized in the field of technical communication to transfer information from database to person and company to company. Often communicators will structure information without a second thought of how or why certain tags are used to mark up the information. Because the company or a manual says to use those tags, the communicator does so. However, if professionals want to unlock the true potential of XML for better sharing of information across platforms, they need to understand the effects the technology using XML as well as political and cultural factors have on the tags being used. This thesis reviewed literature from multiple fields utilizing XML to find how tag choices can be influenced. XML allows for the sharing of information across multiple platforms and databases. Because of this efficiency, XML is utilized by many technologies. Often communicators must tag information so that the technologies can find the marked up information; therefore, technologies like single sourcing, data mining, and knowledge management influence the types of tags created. Additionally, cultural and political influences are analyzed to see how they play a role in determining what tags are used and created for specific documents. The thesis concludes with predictions on the future of XML and the technological, political, and cultural influences associated with XML tag sets based on information found within the thesis.
