Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1920s, in many a sawmill town across the South, the last quitting-time whistle signaled the cutting of the last log of a company's timber holdings and the end of an era in southern lumbering. It marked the end as well of the great primeval forest that covered most of the South when Europeans first invaded it. Much of the first forest, despite the labors of pioneer loggers, remained intact after the Civil War. But after the restrictions of the Southern Homestead Act were removed in 1876, lumbermen and speculators rushed in to acquire millions of acres of virgin woodland for minimal outlays. The frantic harvest of the South's first forest began; it was not to end until thousands of square miles lay denuded and desolate, their fragile soils -- like those of the abandoned cotton lands -- exposed to rapid destruction by the elements. With the end of the sawmill era and the collapse of the southern farm economy, the emigration routes from the South to the industrial cities of the North and Midwest were thronged with people forced from the land. Yet in the first quarter of this century, even as the destruction of forest and land continued, a day of renewal was dawning. The rise of the conservation movement, the beginnings of the national forests, the development of scientific forestry and establishment of forest schools, the advance of chemical research into the use of wood pulp -- all converged even as the 1930s brought to the South the sweeping reclamation programs of the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Tennessee Valley Authority; in their wake came a new generation of wood-using industries concerned not so much with the immediate exploitation of timber as with the maintenance of a renewable resource. In The Greening of the South, this dramatic story is told by one of the participants in the renewal of the forest. Thomas D. Clark, author of many books about southern history, is also an active timber producer on lands in both Kentucky and South Carolina

Book The Southern Forest Resource Assessment

Download or read book The Southern Forest Resource Assessment written by David N. Wear and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Forest Resource Assessment was initiated in 1999 as a result of concerns raised by natural resource managers, the science community, and the public regarding the status and likely future of forests in the South. These included changes to the regiongass forests brought about by rapid urbanization, increasing timber demand, increasing numbers of satellite chip mills, forest pests, and changing air quality. In response to these issues, leaders of four of the regiongass Federal natural resource agencies (USDA Forest Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), and the Tennessee Valley Authority, agreed to work together to provide a careful evaluation of the overall condition and ongoing changes of southern forests. State forestry and fish and wildlife agencies were invited to take part and have actively contributed to the effort. The USDA Forest Service, through the Southern Region and Southern Research Station, has provided overall leadership. The Technical Report (General Technical Report SRS-53) and this Summary Report are the culmination of more than 3 years of effort by more than 25 scientists and analysts from the above agencies as well as southern universities. More than 100 scientists from universities, State and Federal agencies, industry, and conservation organizations provided peer reviews to enhance the reportsgas accuracy and completeness. This Summary Report is intended to provide its reader with an overview of the many forces of change affecting southern forests and the changes they produce. It summarizes the detailed results reported by Assessment Team members in individual chapters of the full Technical Report. The information contained in the body of the Assessment should enhance public understanding of southern forests, inform public debate, and improve public policies that result.

Book Southern Forest Science

Book excerpt: "Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. A first step is to understand the contributions science has made and continues to make to the care and management of forests. This book represents a celebration of past accomplishments, summarizes the current state of knowledge, and creates a vision for the future of southern forestry research and management. Chapters are organized into seven sections: "Looking Back," "Productivity," "Forest Health," "Water and Soils," "Socioeconomic," "Biodiversity," and "Climate Change." Each section is preceded by a brief introductory chapter. Authors were encouraged to focus on the most important aspects of their topics; citations are included to guide readers to further information."

Book Kentucky Forests Eastern Unit Classic Reprint

Download or read book Kentucky Forests Eastern Unit Classic Reprint written by Paul S. Debald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky Forests, Eastern Unit To meet these needs, the Division of Forestry of the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources and the U. S. Forest Service planned and conducted a new inventory of Kentucky forests. The field work was completed in 1964. The mcsweeney-mcnary Forest Research Act of 1928 authorizes the Forest Service to complete a statewide forest inventory of Kentucky at approximate 10 year intervals. This is part of the nationwide program of maintaining a current account of our timber resources. The State of Kentucky appropriated for the current survey. This contribution, supplementing the Federal funds available for a regular survey, made it possible to intensify the inventory. As a result, we can provide the kind of detailed information needed for making long-range plans to meet future demands and in addition help local communities and forest-based industries make more efficient use of the forest resource. Clarence D. Chase, Leader of the Survey Project at the Lake States Forest Experiment Station, directed the inventory. Field survey units of the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the Lake States Station collected the basic inventory data. The Lake States Station computed and tabulated the final statistics and the Central States Forest Experiment Station analyzed and reported the results.
