Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Book Crop Traits for Defense Against Pests and Disease Durability Breakdown and Future Prospects 2nd Edition

Download or read book Crop Traits for Defense Against Pests and Disease Durability Breakdown and Future Prospects 2nd Edition written by Alison J. Karley and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-04-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With global populations expected to exceed 9.2 billion by 2050 and available land and water resources devoted to crop production dwindling, we face significant challenges to secure global food security. Only 12 plant species feed 80% of the world’s population, with just three crop species (wheat, rice and maize) accounting for food consumed by 50% of the global population. Annual losses to crop pests and pathogens are significant, thought to be equivalent to that required to feed a billion people, at a time when crop productivity has plateaued. With pesticide applications becoming increasingly unfeasible on cost, efficacy and environmental grounds, there is growing interest in exploiting plant resistance and tolerance traits for crop protection. Indeed, mankind has been selectively breeding plants for desirable traits for thousands of years. However, resistance and tolerance traits have not always been those most desired, and in many cases have been inadvertently lost during the domestication process: crops have been effectively ‘disarmed by domestication’. Moreover, mechanistic understanding of how resistance and tolerance traits operate is often incomplete, which makes identifying the right combination for crop protection difficult. We aimed to address this Research Topic by inviting authors to contribute their knowledge of appropriate resistance and tolerance traits, explore what is known about durability and breakdown of defensive traits and, finally, asking what are the prospects for exploiting these traits for crop protection. The research topic summarised in this book addresses some of the most important issues in the future sustainability of global crop production.

Book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe

Download or read book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe written by Johan Bremmer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the future of crop protection project is to present an overview of crop protection options for European farmers to enable them to work sustainably while securing food production, preserving biodiversity and supporting farmers' incomes. The policy options proposed are based on an assessment of current and emerging crop protection practices and their impact on the common agricultural policy (CAP) objectives. This overview shows that several crop protection practices are under continuous development and have potential to improve future crop protection in Europe. The likelihood that policy options can be implemented successfully depends upon the extent to which they are consistent with the interests of stakeholder groups. These include farmers, suppliers, supply chain partners, consumers and NGOs defending societal interests. Furthermore, it is important that crop protection policy options are embedded in a systems perspective. This should include related areas, such as phytosanitary policy, the entire crop production system, the supply chain, and international trade relationships – which need to be in harmony with the crop protection policy. For each of these crop protection practices, different policy options are proposed, together with an impact assessment.

Book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture

Download or read book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.

Book Future Challenges in Crop Protection

Download or read book Future Challenges in Crop Protection written by New Zealand Plant Protection Society. Symposium and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand is renowned for its innovative primary production practices and high quality produce. Integrated fruit and wine production are the mainstays of horticultural export while intensive pastoral production, in an environment free of international animal diseases of concern, is the basis of that sector. All sectors are striving for production best practice that has minimal environmental impact, maximises food safety and minimises inputs. Unfortunately New Zealand is not a low cost producer. Land and labour costs are high, therefore 'produce NZ' must be targeted at high value markets. Increasingly producers are being subjected to demands from buyers that add significant compliance costs for no increased financial return. They also face restrictions on production practices by people half a world away with no understanding (or desire to understand) the unique production environment in New Zealand. Their concerns, concealed in phrases such as 'consumer demands', are purely to maximise their market share. The future of New Zealand's primary production industries lies with how these pressures are addressed today.

Book Crop Protection and Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Crop Protection and Sustainable Agriculture written by Derek J. Chadwick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in the world population and changes in welfare have led to an enormously expanding demand for food. In the industrialized world, food surpluses rather than shortages are a problem together with adverse environmental impacts from the overuse of chemicals and excessive exploitation of agricultural land. In the developing world, food production cannot keep up with population growth and the gap between demand and supply is growing. This book explores the theme of sustainable agricultural development in the developing world, with a particular focus on crop protection. Includes chapters on the ecology of food production, on sustainable agriculture and crop protection methods, on the economics of food production and more.

Book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe

Download or read book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe written by Marleen Riemens and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop protection in prevailing agricultural systems in the EU is highly dependent on plant protection products (PPPs) to protect plants against harmful weeds, pests and diseases. The use of PPPs is a cause of health, environmental and public concerns, and a key question is whether their use can be reduced while maintaining adequate yields. This study provides an overview and description of current and new crop protection practices, including mechanical techniques, plant breeding, biocontrol, induced resistance, applying ecological principles, precision agriculture (PA), and emerging plant protection products. The potential and impact of the new crop protection practices is assessed. It may be feasible to design resilient systems that are economically viable, have limited environmental impact and help improve biodiversity. Diverse cropping systems would have a natural resilience to weeds, pests, and diseases, and potentially reduce the dependency on PPPs, enabled by PA technologies. The main challenge is to integrate new varieties, mechanisation, and biocontrol tools in these systems. Continuous development of all crop protection practices is needed to ensure sufficient control of pests, weeds and diseases. The drivers and enablers for implementing alternative crop protection practices are identified, and an analysis of key legislation to support their use is presented.

Book Pest Management and Food Production

Download or read book Pest Management and Food Production written by Montague Yudelman and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their comprehensive paper, Montague Yudelman, Annu Ratta, and Davi Nygaard examine the key issues with regard to pest management and food production over the coming decades. They draw attention to the lack of adequate information on the magnitude and impact of pest losses; without such information, policymarkers are handicapped when devising strategies for meeting food needs. The authors address both chemical and nonchemical approaches to pest management, highlighting the importance of biotechnology. There is growing public sentiment against biotechnology but little appreciation as yet of its contributions to alleviating hunger by, among other things, controlling pest losses. The authors also address the important subject of the roles of different actors in pest management, most notably the private sector.

Book Crop Protection Under Changing Climate

Download or read book Crop Protection Under Changing Climate written by Khawar Jabran and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the impact of important climatic changes on plant pests (including weeds, diseases and insect pests), and their interactions with crop plants. Anthropogenic activities have seriously impacted the global climate. As a result, carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature levels of the earth are on a continuous rise. The global temperature is expected to increase by a 3°C or more by the end of this century. The CO2 concentration was below 300 parts per million (ppm) before the start of the industrial era; however, recently it has exceeded 400 ppm. This is highest ever in human history. Other than global warming and elevated CO2 concentrations, anthropogenic activities have also disturbed the global water cycle, ultimately, impacting the quantity and distribution of rainfall. This has resulted in drought conditions in many parts of the world. Global warming, elevated CO2 concentration and drought are considered the most important recent climatic changes that are impacting global ecosystems and human societies. Among other impacts, the effects of climatic changes on pests, pest-crop interactions and pest control are important with relevance to global food security, and hence require immediate attention by plant scientists. This book discusses innovative and the most effective pest control methods under an environment of changing climate and elaborates on the impact of drought on plant pests and their control.

Book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe

Download or read book The Future of Crop Protection in Europe written by Johan Bremmer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One way of avoiding societal rejection of crop protection practices is to design them in line with stakeholders’ priorities and preferences. This report describes the involvement in crop protection and the opinions regarding the use of plant protection products (PPPs) for the following stakeholder groups: (1) the stakeholders who primarily look at crop protection from a consumption perspective (i.e. consumers, retailers and the food industry), (2) the stakeholders who look at crop protection from a production perspective (i.e. farmers and growers), (3) the stakeholders who look at crop protection from a supply chain perspective (i.e. crop protection industry, plant breeders and other suppliers), and (4) the stakeholders who look at crop protection from a societal perspective (i.e. citizens and NGOs). Four explorative scenarios were developed that look at ways in which existing and emerging crop protection practices might be combined to ensure plant pests and diseases are effectively controlled. These scenarios were discussed in a brainstorming meeting with relevant stakeholders. For each scenario, the potential implications of the crop protection practices for different stakeholder groups (farmers, consumers, industry, NGOs) as well as the identification of their hopes and fears (i.e. potential positive as well as negative knock-on effects) were identified.
