Book The Future Military Presence in the Panama Canal Zone

Download or read book The Future Military Presence in the Panama Canal Zone written by John J. Stang and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic question presented is the future military presence in the Panama Canal Zone. Data was gathered from numerous sources. Background material was obtained from current publications as well as reference books. Due to the current nature of the question and the fact that the ultimate answer must be decided by the Congress of the United States, much reliance was placed on statements made by leading Senators and information contained in correspondence with them as well as personal interviews with individuals representing organizations who are interested in this vital question. A trip to the Panama Canal Zone in January of 1975 was quite helpful in providing information concerning the attitudes of those presently involved in the military mission in the Panama Canal Zone. This trip also funished an opportunity to visit with officials of the Republic of Panama. All indications are that there is little possibility of any great change in the military presence in the Panama Canal Zone in the foreseeable future. (Author).

Book Emperors in the Jungle

Download or read book Emperors in the Jungle written by John Lindsay-Poland and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-11 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emperors in the Jungle is an exposé of key episodes in the military involvement of the United States in Panama. Investigative journalism at its best, this book reveals how U.S. ideas about taming tropical jungles and people, combined with commercial and military objectives, shaped more than a century of intervention and environmental engineering in a small, strategically located nation. Whether uncovering the U.S. Army’s decades-long program of chemical weapons tests in Panama or recounting the invasion in December 1989 which was the U.S. military’s twentieth intervention in Panama since 1856, John Lindsay-Poland vividly portrays the extent and costs of U.S. involvement. Analyzing new evidence gathered through interviews, archival research, and Freedom of Information Act requests, Lindsay-Poland discloses the hidden history of U.S.–Panama relations, including the human and environmental toll of the massive canal building project from 1904 to 1914. In stunning detail he describes secret chemical weapons tests—of toxins including nerve agent and Agent Orange—as well as plans developed in the 1960s to use nuclear blasts to create a second canal in Panama. He chronicles sustained efforts by Panamanians and international environmental groups to hold the United States responsible for the disposal of the tens of thousands of explosives it left undetonated on the land it turned over to Panama in 1999. In the context of a relationship increasingly driven by the U.S. antidrug campaigns, Lindsay-Poland reports on the myriad issues that surrounded Panama’s takeover of the canal in accordance with the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty, and he assesses the future prospects for the Panamanian people, land, and canal area. Bringing to light historical legacies unknown to most U.S. citizens or even to many Panamanians, Emperors in the Jungle is a major contribution toward a new, more open relationship between Panama and the United States.

Download or read book A Revised US Military Role in the Panama Canal Zone written by Frederick G. Kuehn and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the hypothesis that the United States will renegotiate its treaties with the Republic of Panama, the purpose of this essay is to determine a new military role for the Armed Forces in the Canal Zone should this occur during the 1975-1985 time frame. In this conceptual review, possible threats and preventive measures were examined. Factors such as the capabilities of the Russian maritime forces in this hemisphere and the means available to the US Armed Forces in a time of crisis were studied. Recommendations are made concerning US interests and their interrelationships with our national objectives in this area should the hypothesis become a reality.

Based on extensive discussions with 45 U.S. and Panamanian Gov't. officials, this report provides a detailed account of the period from Sep. 1995 to Dec. 1996 during which there were missed opportunities to conclude a base-rights agreement between the U.S. and Panama. Book The Importance of United States Control of the Panama Canal

Download or read book The Importance of United States Control of the Panama Canal written by Camile J Chaisson (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Panama Canal is a perennial source of misunderstanding and disagreement between the United States and the Republic of Panama, and indeed between the U.S. and much of Latin America. Since the Panama riots of 1964, the U.S. and Panama have engaged in a seemingly fruitless effort to establish new understandings regarding the canal. At the moment it appears that they are no nearer to cooperation regarding the status and administration of the Canal than they were in 1964, and are probably farther from agreement than they have been at any time since 1903. This essay includes a history on the treaties and background of the Canal, the political problems, its economic significance and its strategic military importance. It is this author's opinion that United States presence in the Canal Zone is most important and that we cannot relinquish control of this area.

Book Guarding the Gates The Story of Fort Clayton Its Setting Its Architecture and Its Role in the History of the Panama Canal

Download or read book Guarding the Gates The Story of Fort Clayton Its Setting Its Architecture and Its Role in the History of the Panama Canal written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Panama Canal Treaty and Allied Agreements of 1977 between the United States and the Republic of Panama (RoP) governed the operation, maintenance, and defense of the Panama Canal from their implementation on 1 October 1979 until 31 December 1999. At noon on that date, the Panama Canal Treaty terminated and the RoP assumed full control and responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and defense of the Panama Canal. The U.S. military presence in the former Panama Canal Zone ceased at that time and all remaining Department of Defense (DoD) property in the area reverted to the RoP. In anticipation of the scheduled transfer of this DoD property, efforts have been made to produce a lasting record of U.S. military buildings and installations in the former Panama Canal Zone. Personnel from the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), working in cooperation with various DoD services and commands in Panama, have spent 7 years producing site-specific documentation related to the developmental history of DoD installations in the RoP Of those installations, Fort Clayton was among the very last properties to be transferred to the RoP. As previous documentation efforts focused on installations being transferred more quickly, Fort Clayton's physical legacy remained largely unrecorded. With less than a year remaining before treaty termination, discussions began concerning the creation of a comprehensive history of Fort Clayton based upon its built environment. The CERL personnel and U.S. Army South (USARSO) officials agreed on the need for such a history, and this project was born.

Book The Panama Canal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter LaFeber
  • Publisher : New York : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1978
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Panama Canal written by Walter LaFeber and published by New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly updated edition of Walter LaFeber's widely praised study of the evolution of U.S.-Panama relations contains two new chapters on the events that have occurred since the Panama Canal Treaty in 1978.This new edition offers particularly detailed examinations of the 1988 attempt to oust Manuel Noriega and Noriega's role in aiding the Nicaraguan Contras, as well as invaluable background information for understanding the 1989 crises. LaFeber argues that the interdependent, but turbulent, relationship between Panama and the United States continued into the 1980s with the U.S. using General Manuel Antonio Noriega to overthrow the Sandinista government of Nicaragua. U.S. officials in the Reagan administration also subordinated widespread knowledge of Noriega's drug trafficking in order to keep Panama in line with the U.S. policy towards Nicaragua. But by 1986, the United States both knew and demanded too much of Noriega, and the relationship finally began to fragment. LaFeber's updated volume remains the essential source for anyone who wants a complete picture of U.S.-Panama relations from Balboa to the present.
