This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles Involved in Dr. Edward Caird's Philosophy of Religion: Inaugural-Dissertation, Zur Erlangung Der Doktorwürde Der Honen Philosophischen Fakultät Der Friedrich-Alexanders-Universität Erlangen The Caird brothers have been recognized for nearly a generation as belonging to the ranks of the most important Scotch philosophers. John Caird, the elder of the two, was principal of the University of Glasgow. Edward, the author of the work here reviewed, was for some time professor of Moral Philosophy in the same university. After resigning this position, he became master of Balliol College, Oxford, which position he filled until quite recently. Previous to the appear ance of this work, he had proven his ability as a philosopher by his Critical Philosophy of Kant, and The Social Philosophy and Religion of Comte. The work here discussed is recognized by friends and foes as one of the clearest and most representative statements of the views of anglo-hegelians. The work has been widely read, and the influence of the lectures was so great that none but Hegelians were chosen for some time afterwards to deliver the Gifford Lectures. Dr. Caird professes to write for those who are destitute of faith, but are terrified at scepticism and proposes to show how in a general way the theory of evolution will help those in this frame of mind. It is the purpose of this criticism to show in a general way how the position of Dr. Caird is Open to attack. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."
