Book The Classic Science Fiction Collection

Download or read book The Classic Science Fiction Collection written by H. G. Wells and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 1221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 100 years, science fiction writers have told tales of alien encounters and fascinating technologies and warned of the dangers of dystopian governments. From Victorians experimenting with time travel to pioneers exploring the depths of space, the stories collected here are a tribute to the imagination of the inventors of the modern science fiction genre. Some tales are filled with boundless optimism for the ingenuity of humanity while others provide fearful warnings of the risks of war and the dangers of technology. In the late 19th century, writers across the world began looking to the future. In France, Jules Verne explored the possibilities of future technology and the wonders of exploration in his novels Journey to the Centre of the Earthand Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In England, H. G. Wells established himself as one of the founders of science fiction with his novels The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds. They were both also prolific short story writers. Others followed suit. In Bengal, the feminist Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain used her fiction to advance women's rights and education. In the United States, Jack London found science fiction the perfect way to express some of his unique political ideas. By the end of World War I, science fiction had established itself as a major genre. With the birth of the pulp magazine came a slew of accomplished writers - authors such as George Griffith, John Ulrich Giesy, Homer Eon Flint, Cyril G. Wates and others excelled at the short story, able to experiment and create a sense of wonder in their fascinating tales. This collection includes stories by: Grant Allen Stephen Vincent Benét Miles J. Edgar Wallace enjoyed writing science fiction. "Planetoid 127", first published in 1929 but reprinted as late 1962, is a short story about an Earth scientist who communicates via wireless with his counterpart on a duplicate Earth orbiting unseen because it is on the opposite side of the Sun. The idea of a mirror Earth or mirror Universe later became a standard subgenre within science fiction. The story also bears similarities to Rudyard Kipling's hard science fiction story "Wireless". Wallace's other science fiction works include "The Green Rust", a story of bio-terrorists who threaten to release an agent that will destroy the world's corn crops, "1925", which accurately predicted that a short peace would be followed by a German attack on England, "The Black Grippe", which is about a disease that renders everyone in the world blind, and The Sodium Lines; or, The Day the World Stopped. Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) was an English writer. As well as journalism, Wallace wrote screen plays, poetry, historical non-fiction, 18 stage plays, 957 short stories and over 170 novels, 12 in 1929 alone. More than 160 films have been made of Wallace's work. Table of Contents: Planetoid 127 The Green Rust 1925 - The Story of a Fatal Peace The Black Grippe The Day the World Stopped

Book excerpt: "ARL has published a book and Web site profiling selected rare and special collections in major research libraries of North America, Celebrating Research: Rare and Special Collections from the Membership of the Association of Research Libraries. The compendium is a sampling of the abundance and variety of collections available for use. Special collections have been broadly construed to encompass distinctive, rare and unique, emerging media, born-digital, digitized, uncommon, non-standard, primary, and heritage materials. Celebrating Research includes 118 collection profiles, each from a different ARL member library. Each profile is illustrated with color photographs and tells a story of a single collection, recounting how the resources were acquired and developed. The compilation is rich with examples of how research libraries are engaging different communities to deliver library services and encourage the use of such distinctive collections. Also included is an introductory essay by British rare book expert Nicolas Barker and an appendix that provides a broad description of each library's special collection holdings and pertinent contact information. The book contains a detailed index; the Web site provides a search engine. The volume is the result of a collaborative effort among ARL member libraries on the occasion of the Association's 75th anniversary. It was edited by Philip N. Cronenwett, Special Collections Librarian Emeritus, Dartmouth College Library; Kevin Osborn, Research & Design Ltd.; and Samuel A. Streit, Director for Special Collections, Brown University Library."--Publisher's website.
