Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruits of the Tree I appreciate beyond the power of words to express, the privilege of participating in this great conference - the greatest religious gathering in the history of the Christian church. I am here because my interest in missionary work was greatly quickened by a personal visit to numerous missionary fields in Asia and Africa. Having been a church member from the age of fourteen, and having taken an interest in church work, I had contributed to foreign missions as to other branches of Christian work, and had heard numerous addresses by missionaries respecting the work done in the foreign field. Book The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Classic Reprint written by Harrison'S Nurseries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trees That Grow the Fruit That Sells Some propagators use the wood pruned from nursery stock to get their supply of buds. Others cut buds from bearing orchards, but make no selection of the trees which bear the most fruit. It has been pretty thor oughly demonstrated that when young trees are propagated by buds or grafts, they have the same bearing characteristics as the tree from which the budding or grafting wood was cut. If this tree is a regular bearer of heavy cr0ps. Of fine fruit, the young trees in all probability will be the same. If this tree is a shy bearer, or produces inferior fruit, the young trees have very little chance of ever becoming profitable orchard units. You can notice it in your own orchard and neighborhood - one Baldwin or York Imperial tree will bear twice as many apples as another standing alongside it, and better Apples, too. This condition applies as well to Peaches and' Pears and other fruits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Apple Tree, With Kith and Kin Of all the fruits with which prodigal nature has blessed mankind, there is none that has entered so intimately into every-day life as the Apple. Surely, then, the poetical side Of this old friend, so beautifully and lovingly sung in almost every tongue, brings its own welcome. We heartily thank 'both author and publisher for the permission granted us to reproduce copyrighted poems of the Apple family, and for the many warm letters of encouragement, and treasures unearthed from old scrap-books. If we have unwittingly trespassed upon the property and rights of others, we apologize and beg forgiveness, in the name of our mutual and lifelong friend, the Apple. Errors there are many, which we request you to correct, and to make any suggestion that may aid in drawing together overlooked, and to us unknown, poems in print on this branch of the family. To the spicy fruit now filling your bins and cellars we add the story of harvest, press, cider, and still, and hope, as the seasons come and go, to send forth the songs of blossom, tree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Trees, Fruits and Vegetables The varieties that seem best adapted to street planting are white elm and box elder, the elm being the huest street tree that is native to the temperate zone. Cottonwood grows better in sin gle rows than in close plantations. To many it is an attractive form, and where the cottonwood leaf beetle has not appeared it makes a fair street tree, though never giving the dense shade of box elder. Silver maple ranks next to \white elm and box elder as a street tree, and will be found satisfactory in the southern half of the state. It is apt to throw out strong water sprouts. Book The Fruits of America Vol 2

Download or read book The Fruits of America Vol 2 written by C. M. Hovey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruits of America, Vol. 2: Containing Richly Colored Figures, and Full Descriptions of All the Choicest Varieties Cultivated in the United States Few varieties of none of our American seedlings, - have had a higher reputation than the Jefferson. It has been pronounced nearly or quite equal to the Green Gage almost unsurpassable standard of excellence, - by some of our pomologists, and in consequence of such an eulogium in its favor, it has been extensively sought after, and introduced into many of the finest collections of this fruit, with the expectation that it would supplant that old and deservedly popular and esteemed plum. But as the trees have come into hearing this expectation has not been realized. The Jefferson proves, indeed, to be a most excellent variety, superior to many others of the same season, but it cannot be ranked with the Green Gage. It possesses, however, great beauty, and, in this respect perhaps, it equals, if it does not surpass, any other variety; it has the same delicate yellow skin as the Washington, but this is blotched and marbled, in the most beautiful blending of tints, with crimson, lake and rich purple. It has also the excellent characteristic of hanging long upon the tree without rotting. Summing up all its qualities, - size, beauty and fine davor, - it must claim a prominent place among our plums, answering as a very good substitute for the Green Gage when that variety is gone, though falling a little short of it in excellence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apple-Tree: The Open Country Books No; 1 The wind is snapping in the bamboos, knocking together the resonant canes and weaving the myriad flexile wreaths above them. The palm heads rustle with a brisk crinkling music. Great ferns stand in the edge of the forest, and giant arums cling their arms about the trunks of trees and rear their dim jacks-in-the-pulpit far in the branches; and in the greater distance I know that green parrots are flying in twos from tree to tree. The plant forms are strange and various, making mosaic of contrasting range of leaf-size and leaf-shape, palm and grass and fern, epiphyte and liana and clumpy mistletoe, of grace and clumsiness and even misproportion, a tall thick landscape all mingled into a symmetry of disorder that charms the attention and fascinates the eye. It is a soft and delicious air wherein I sit. A torrid drowse is in the receding landscape. The people move leisurely, as befits the world where there is no preparation for frost and no urgent need of laborious apparel. There are tardy bullock-carts, unconscious donkeys, and men pushing vehicles. There are odd products and unaccustomed cakes and cookies on little stands by the roadside, where the turbaned vendor sits on the ground unconcernedly.
