Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ribbit is a great, sword-wielding hero whose battles against evil are legendary in his small town of Lily Pad Hollow; at least in his mind he is. In reality, Ribbit is just a young frog with big dreams. When flies mysteriously stop coming to the Hollow, putting everyone in danger, Ribbit jumps at the opportunity to show just what he's made of. The only problem: no frog that has ever dared try to cross the cattail borders has ever returned. But that wasn't going to scare Ribbit away from fulfilling his dream of leaving the Hollow and returning a hero. His two best friends, Phinn and Croak, join him as he embarks on a thrilling adventure leaving his small town behind and traveling into the unknown. Along the way, the three frogs meet creatures beyond their wildest imagination and come face to face with an enemy more evil than any of Ribbit's imaginary foes. Will they be able to return the missing flies and live to tell the tale?

Download or read book The Corrosion of Character The Personal Consequences of Work in the New Capitalism written by Richard Sennett and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Business Week Best Book of the Year.... "A devastating and wholly necessary book."—Studs Terkel, author of Working In The Corrosion of Character, Richard Sennett, "among the country's most distinguished thinkers . . . has concentrated into 176 pages a profoundly affecting argument" (Business Week) that draws on interviews with dismissed IBM executives, bakers, a bartender turned advertising executive, and many others to call into question the terms of our new economy. In his 1972 classic, The Hidden Injuries of Class (written with Jonathan Cobb), Sennett interviewed a man he called Enrico, a hardworking janitor whose life was structured by a union pay schedule and given meaning by his sacrifices for the future. In this new book-a #1 bestseller in Germany-Sennett explores the contemporary scene characterized by Enrico's son, Rico, whose life is more materially successful, yet whose work lacks long-term commitments or loyalties. Distinguished by Sennett's "combination of broad historical and literary learning and a reporter's willingness to walk into a store or factory [and] strike up a conversation" (New York Times Book Review), this book "challenges the reader to decide whether the flexibility of modern capitalism . . . is merely a fresh form of oppression" (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Praise for The Corrosion of Character: "A benchmark for our time."—Daniel Bell "[A]n incredibly insightful book."—William Julius Wilson "[A] remarkable synthesis of acute empirical observation and serious moral reflection."—Richard Rorty "[Sennett] offers abundant fresh insights . . . illuminated by his concern with people's struggle to give meaning to their lives."—[Memphis] Commercial Appeal
Download or read book Novels Novelists and Readers written by Mary F. Rogers and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-07-03 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on British and American novels, Rogers takes a sociological look at the business of literature, the book industry, and the experiences of novelists and readers. Viewing the novel as a vehicle of cultural meaning, the author shows how the literary canon overlooks substantial similarities among novels in favor of restrictive codes based on social as well as literary considerations. She emphasizes the kinship between the social sciences and humanities in her analysis, by reinvigorating affection for the novel and also establishing its rich cultural significance.
Download or read book Katathym Imaginative Psychotherapy written by Ulrich Bahrke and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Dr. Bahrke and Dr. Nohr introduce psychotherapists and psychoanalysts to how they can work with Katathym Imaginative Psychotherapy (KIP) at the current level of psychodynamic knowledge. The method is a method of psychodynamic psychotherapy introduced by Hanscarl Leuner in 1955 under the name "Katathymes Bilderleben" and further developed since then. The authors clearly show the state of the art in case studies and in a systematic presentation. About the method: How does KIP work? The therapeutic practice is based on the inclusion of imaginations in the therapy process. Unconscious desires, conflicts, their defense as well as the transference relationship are thus symbolically illustrated. The imaginations stimulated and accompanied by the therapist are a valuable supplement to the psychodynamic process of understanding and, in addition to conversation, open up an affect-related, motivation-promoting access route in the treatment of many disturbance patterns in short and long-term therapies. In contrast to other psychotherapy methods that use imaginations, imaginations in KIP are understood as a component of relational work, taking transference and resistance into account. Written for ... Psychodynamically working psychotherapists, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts who work with imaginations, as well as all colleagues interested in figurative language, metaphors and dreams.

Download or read book Building and Dwelling written by Richard Sennett and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preeminent thinker redefines the meaning of city life and charts a way forward Building and Dwelling is the definitive statement on cities by the renowned public intellectual Richard Sennett. In this sweeping work, he traces the anguished relation between how cities are built and how people live in them, from ancient Athens to twenty-first-century Shanghai. He shows how Paris, Barcelona, and New York City assumed their modern forms; rethinks the reputations of Jane Jacobs, Lewis Mumford, and others; and takes us on a tour of emblematic contemporary locations, from the backstreets of Medellín, Colombia, to the Google headquarters in Manhattan. Through it all, he laments that the “closed city”—segregated, regimented, and controlled—has spread from the global North to the exploding urban agglomerations of the global South. As an alternative, he argues for the “open city,” where citizens actively hash out their differences and planners experiment with urban forms that make it easier for residents to cope. Rich with arguments that speak directly to our moment—a time when more humans live in urban spaces than ever before—Building and Dwelling draws on Sennett’s deep learning and intimate engagement with city life to form a bold and original vision for the future of cities.

Book excerpt: In the late eighteenth century Hungarian inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen, inspired by the success of his Mechanical Turk, which purported to be an automaton capable of playing chess, set out to create a machine that could actually speak, simulating the organs of speech by means of a series of bellows, pipes, and valves. His narrative of his efforts, together with a typically Enlightenment-era exposition of properties of human languages, appeared in slightly different German and French versions in 1791.
