Book excerpt: In the spring of 1884, Jack, an adventurous young man, packs his bags in Victoria, BC, and heads for the prairies, looking for a new life and hoping to get involved in an Indian war. Instead, he lucks into an exciting job in the fur trade and meets and befriends many of the great chiefs of the Cree nation, such as Poundmaker and Big Bear, and ends up between a bullet and a target when the North-West Rebellion erupts. After witnessing the historic Frog Lake Massacre and the murder of his friends, Jack is captured by the Cree warriors and, later, guides the famous Inspector Sam Steele on the hunt for Cree Chief Big Bear. The Frog Lake Massacre is the first book in a trilogy about a young man who is trying to forge an independent life for himself in the huge and newly established country of Canada. Along the way, he discovers that bravery and loyalty bring their own rewards.

Book excerpt: Non-fiction authority Myrna Kostash merges the past and the present in The Frog Lake Reader, which offers a startlingly objective perspective on the tragic events surrounding the Frog Lake Massacre of 1885. By bringing together eyewitness accounts and journal excerpts, memoirs and contemporary fiction, and excerpts from interviews with historians, Kostash provides a panoramic perspective on a tragedy often overshadowed by Louis Riela€(TM)s rebellion during the same year. The history is contentious and its interpretation unresolved, but The Frog Lake Reader, with its broad survey of vital historical accounts and points of view, offers the most comprehensive and informative narrative on the Frog Lake Massacre to date.

Book The War Trail of Big Bear Being the Story of the Connection of Big Bear and other Cree Indian Chiefs

Download or read book The War Trail of Big Bear Being the Story of the Connection of Big Bear and other Cree Indian Chiefs written by William Bleasdell Cameron and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1926, this book by William Bleasdell Cameron is the gripping account of his experiences of captivity following the Frog Lake Massacre of the North-West Rebellion of April 2, 1885, of which he was the only male survivor. “On that dread day in April, 1885, when savagery was blood-mad, his constant and understanding kindness to the Indians bore fruit: “Those women are starting for the camp. Go with them; and do not leave them. They will not shoot among the women.” And from that moment until the release of the prisoners two months later he lived amongst them in their wanderings, an intelligent and sympathetic eye-witness of all that happened. This is the story Mr. Cameron has to tell. It is of especial value for its treatment of events on the little-known western front.”—The Washington Historical Quarterly

Book Death in the Peaceable Kingdom

Download or read book Death in the Peaceable Kingdom written by Dimitry Anastakis and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death in the Peaceable Kingdom is an intelligent, innovative response to the incorrect assumption that Canadian history is dry and uninspiring. Using the "hooks" of murder, execution, assassination, and suicide, Dimitry Anastakis introduces readers to the full scope of post-Confederation Canadian history. Beginning with the assassination of Thomas D'Arcy McGee, Anastakis recounts the deaths of famous Canadians such as Louis Riel, Tom Thomson, and Pierre Laporte. He also introduces lesser-known events such as the execution of shell-shocked deserter Pte. Harold Carter during the First World War and the suicide of suspected communist Herbert Norman in Cairo during the Cold War. The book concludes with recent Canadian deaths including the suicides of Amanda Todd and Rehtaeh Parsons as a result of cyberbullying. Complementing the chapters are short vignettes--"Murderous Moments" and "Tragic Tales"--that point to broader themes and issues. The book also contains a number of "Active History" exercises such as activities, assignments, and primary document analyses. A timeline, 24 images, and further reading suggestions are included.
