Book The Friendliest Place in the Universe

Download or read book The Friendliest Place in the Universe written by Hillary S. Webb and published by University Professors Press. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dismayed by the divisiveness of the Trump/Brexit era, anthropologist Hillary S. Webb began to fear that the better angels of our nature had deserted us entirely—if they had ever existed at all. In the Fall of 2017, Webb traveled to Berlin, Germany, for a week’s vacation. There, she found renewed hope in an unlikely place: Cosmic Comedy, an international stand-up venue described as “The Friendliest Comedy Club in Europe.” Down in that dark, beer-soaked basement, Webb watched with awe as the club’s eccentric-but-lovable co-promoters, Dharmander Singh and Neil Numb, gathered a group of culturally and demographically diverse comedians and audience members, transforming them over the course of an evening from strangers into allies through laughter. Convinced that Cosmic Comedy offered a model of togetherness that could help heal the divisions between us, Webb returned to Berlin a few months later with the intent of uncovering the club’s recipe for what is known in humanistic anthropology as communitas or “collective joy.” As with all journeys of the mind and heart, Webb’s investigations revealed more than she bargained for, including the unwelcome realization that collective joy has a dark side and that she, herself, was as susceptible to its intoxicating influence as anyone else. The result is a humorous, hopeful examination of the nature of human togetherness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written for Christian laypersons who want to think about their faith and be given creative and relevant suggestions about what it means to attempt authentic Christian living in todays world, and for religious professionals who want or need to reflect on various topics and issues of the Christian faith journey and desire mental stimulation and spiritual inspiration regarding them. The Rev. Dr. Cliff Cain, Harrod-C.S. Lewis Professor of Religious Studies at Westminster College, provides a compelling response to the question Can God be an effective and reliant participant in a user-friendly 21st century universe? This book is current, intellectually stimulating, and offers a multigenerational perspective to age-old questions that demand answers that enable deeper understanding. Set aside the time to read this marvelous book! Benjamin Ola. Akande, Ph.D. President, Westminster College This book should be required reading for any college course seeking to orient students to the issues that address meaning in their lives. It should also be used as a valuable resource for local church adult education courses. I know Cliff Cain to be a rare combination of scholar and pastor, and this blending allows the reader to catch his enthusiasm and passion for the Christian life. The reader will be drawn-in to an in-depth dialogue about the Christian journey and current Christian issues. I recommend it highly. The Reverend Erwin R. Bode, B.A., M.Div., S.T.M., D.D. Leader in Progressive Ecumenical Higher Education Ministries for 20 years In a fresh and engaging style, Professor Cain applies biblical values and stories in short reflections that give the reader a way to escape the daily rush and settle into the quiet of mindful reflection. Like Jesus own story-telling style, Cain takes language and images familiar to his audience, but turns them on their heads, reinterpreting them with Gospel values, and even connections to other faiths. A User-friendly Universe? is an enriching read for anyone connected to college as a place which celebrates the life of the mind and the cultivation of the spirit. Janice A. Book Immigrants in Prairie Cities

Download or read book Immigrants in Prairie Cities written by Royden Loewen and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-11-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of the twentieth century, sequential waves of immigrants from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa settled in the cities of the Canadian Prairies. In Immigrants in Prairie Cities, Royden Loewen and Gerald Friesen analyze the processes of cultural interaction and adaptation that unfolded in these urban centres and describe how this model of diversity has changed over time. The authors argue that intimate Prairie cities fostered a form of social diversity characterized by vibrant ethnic networks, continuously evolving ethnic identities, and boundary zones that facilitated intercultural contact and hybridity. Impressive in scope, Immigrants in Prairie Cities spans the entire twentieth century, and encompasses personal testimonies, government perspectives, and even fictional narratives. This engaging work will appeal to both historians of the Canadian Prairies and those with a general interest in migration, cross-cultural exchange, and urban history.

Book excerpt: Mindfulness-based STRATEGIC AWARENESS TRAINING This comprehensive workbook provides training based on new findings in computational neuroscience. It will enhance your decision-making skills by increasing the precision of your perception and mental processing. This training will enable you to navigate these disruptive, uncertain times skillfully, and in good emotional and mental health. Part 1 provides a conceptual introduction into understanding the brain as a predicting organ. Part 2 leads you through 8 systematic training sessions to enhance your decision-making skills by enhancing your strategic awareness and belief updating capabilities. The practices are designed to fit in the busy schedules of active people. Mindfulness-based Strategic Awareness Training (MBSAT) has been tested by practitioners for over 10 years and is widely acclaimed. The government of Singapore, known for its outstanding commitment to the education of its population, has included MBSAT in its official skill-building program and subsidizes participation in MBSAT training. This is a remarkable book. On one reading, it is a scholarly and pragmatic guide to self-understanding and realisation—through making the right kind of decisions as embodied creatures in a social world. On another reading, it naturalises—or perhaps socialises—the free energy principle: an account of self-organisation and sentience grounded in statistical physics and applied widely in theoretical biology and computational neuroscience. This book liberates the fundaments of the free energy principle by applying them to the delicate practice of living in the 21st-century. This is achieved by starting from the academic foundations and artfully scaffolding the readers journey with intuitive, lived examples; sometimes, touchingly personal examples. If you commit to the epistemic program offered by this book, not only will you become a fluent practitioner of embodied Bayesian inference and decision-making, you will be able to answer Einstein’s existential question: “Is the universe friendly?” Karl J. Friston, MBBS, MA, MRCPsych, MAE, FMedSci, FRBS, FRS — Scientific Director: Wellcome Centre for Human Neuroimaging — Professor: Queen Square Institute of Neurology, University College London Honorary Consultant: The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery

Book The Friendly Green Alien A World Saving Adventure

Download or read book The Friendly Green Alien A World Saving Adventure written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "The Friendly Green Alien" tells the moving story of Zorg, a brave and caring alien from a faraway planet who comes to Earth to finish a very important mission. Twelve exciting chapters follow Zorg's quest to find an old diamond that can break a dangerous curse that threatens both Earth and his world. Every part of the story is a tribute to the kindness, friendship, and determination of young heroes. When Zorg gets there, he meets Timmy and Sarah. The two brave and curious kids decide to become friends with the alien. The trip they take together is about finding their own strength as much as it is about saving the world. The trip tries their resolve and makes their bond stronger. They learn a lot about courage, friendship, and trusting others as they go through each difficult situation. For example, the Whispering Woods' false silence and the River of Reflections' dangerous currents both help them get closer to their goal. The story is built around the events that test the characters' ideas of what is brave and what is horrifying. In the Cave of Echoes, they face their worst fears and depend on each other to help them find their way through the darkness. At the base of the Great Mountain, where the story ends, the big bird called the Guardian checks to see how pure their hearts are and finds that they are true and never change. The final battle against the evil curse shows how unity and good feelings can change things. The old crystal is raised into the air by Timmy, Sarah, and Zorg. They use their best memories and love for each other to create a beautiful light that will destroy darkness. "The Friendly Green Alien" is more than just a fun adventure story; it also has deep themes about friendship, bravery, and the power of kindness. People will remember that love and friendship are the most powerful forces in the universe when Zorg goes back to his world because of the lessons he learned and the connections he made. Chapter 1: A Visitor from Another World. One beautiful night, when the moon was out and everyone seemed to be sleeping soundly, something strange happened in Mrs. Brown's garden. A spaceship that was about the size of a car and sparkled like a silver pearl in the moonlight gently landed on the soft grass. As the door to the spaceship slowly opened, a very strange guest stepped out. You wouldn't normally see a bird, a plane, or something like that. Zorg was there. He was an alien from a world other than ours. It was dark and Zorg's skin was green. She was short, about the height of a kitchen chair. There was awe and surprise in his big, round eyes. It was like everything he saw was the most amazing thing he had ever seen. Because Zorg was in a very important task, he had to travel through space and see stars and planets of all shapes and sizes. The home world of Zorg was in danger. It is beautiful, with fields of crystal flowers and purple skies. The land was about to become a place of darkness and sadness because of a terrible curse that had spread through it. Despite everything, there was hope. There were tales that an old gem was hidden somewhere on Earth that could break the curse and bring light back to Zorg's realm. People said that this crystal was filled with the brightest light and could beat any darkness or gloom, no matter how strong it was. It wasn't like any other rock. It gave Zorg courage to go on his trip, and he felt like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. It wasn't going to be easy, he knew. The crystal could have been hidden anywhere on Earth because it was so big. The crystal might be hiding in mountains, forests, seas, or deserts that Zorg had only read about in old books about his world. His home, on the other hand, gave him strength. To save Earth and his own world, Zorg chose to find the diamond. And the terrible curse was after all threatening all places of light and goodness. Earth, with its lush plants, clear waters, and wide range of animals, was worth protecting. When Zorg first set foot on Earth, he looked up at the stars he had come from. They seemed to glow in a positive way, as if to tell him that every journey starts with one step. Zorg set out on his journey excited to learn more about this new world, meet its people, and find the old diamond. His heart was full of hope, and the excitement of the unknown lit up his eyes. The night was quiet and beautiful, and it was the first time anyone could see Zorg's amazing plan. It was a mission that would bring challenges, bonds, and an experience like no other. Chapter 2: The Meeting When the sun came up and cast a warm glow over Mrs. Brown's garden, a big event was about to happen. Timmy, Mrs. Brown's brave and interested son, was the first person to notice the surprise visitor. He saw something or someone hiding behind a bush while he was outside playing. Zorg, a little green alien from a faraway world, was having a hard time fitting in. Not like most people, though, Timmy felt a rush of joy instead of fear or shock. Since he was a little kid, Timmy has had dreams about aliens. He had stared up at the sky many nights in a row, wondering if anyone else saw him. He was now in his own yard, Zorg! Timmy walked up to Zorg with a smile on his face, and Zorg knew he had finally made his first friend on Earth. When they introduced themselves, they found that they had a lot in common, even though they were from very different places. Timmy was interested in Zorg's beautiful spaceship and his stories about worlds far away. Zorg was amazed at how kind and interested Timmy was in the universe. Zorg told Timmy why he was being sent to Earth. He talked about his home world and how it was in danger from a bad curse. He also talked about an old jewel that might be able to save it. That the crystal was not only strong, but also full of good things and light, Zorg said. It was his goal and Timmy's too to find it. Timmy listened carefully with wide eyes. The idea of going on a real trip to protect the earth made him think of stories he could tell. He quickly told Zorg that he would help him with his search. Although he knew it would be hard, the thought of starting such an important trip made him very determined. They made a plan. Zorg would have Timmy as his guide on Earth to help him get around in this strange place. They would look everywhere and follow any clues they could find until they found the lost jewel. They became friends because they both wanted to change the world and promised to be brave and have exciting adventures. Zorg saw many amazing things around the world thanks to Timmy's tour, like lush forests, vast seas, and a lot of different species. In return, Zorg told stories about his home world, using words to make pictures of beautiful skies and crystal flowers. When they met, it was the start of an unbelievable journey. That showed how strong friendships can be and how people from different backgrounds can work together for a good cause. Because of a good cause, Timmy and Zorg, the boy and the alien, became unlikely partners. Before they left on their trip, the world seemed full of potential, and the air was filled with the thrill of the unknown. Their friendship gave them strength and hope, and when they worked together, they were ready to face any problems that came their way.
