Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 4 of 4 Although it might be, and indeed in this case was proved to be, a momentous thing for a monarch to journey a few miles from one royal palace to another, it would not, on the face of it, seem that this shift of lodgings was in itself a very difficult matter. And yet, curiously enough, at the time when it took place the gravity of the business, its historical importance, its tragedy and its pathos, seemed less conspicuous, at least to the official eye and mind, than the difficulty, the trouble, and the worry of the undertaking. For the King of France to come from his palace at Versailles to his palace at Paris meant an amount of perturbation, of anxiety, of a despair touching the extreme of comedy, of which few except those immediately concerned had any conception. 'I sought, ' he says, 'that stately city of which I had read such wonderful accounts. I found but high and squalid tenements, long and ludicrously narrow streets, poor wretches every were cloth the rags, a crowed of well-night naked children; I beheld a dense population, and appalling poverty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 It has been said that the fall of the Bastille first revealed to France the weakness of her Government, and that the Government never recovered from the revelation. But, indeed, the weakness of the Government had revealed itself before: first, when it consented to summon the States-General, and again, even more flagrantly, when it failed to accept the challenge of Mirabeau, and to coerce a mutinous Third Estate at the point of the bayonet. The weakness of the Government was betrayed rather by the triumph of the Tennis Court than by the humiliation of the Bastille. The weakness of the Bastille proved the strength of the people. The taking of the Bastille is not remarkable as a military achievement; the pettiest war ever waged must needs bear witness to exploits far more illustrious in the eyes of the soldier and the strategist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4: Translated From the Third Edition of the Original German Work The Work of Professor von Sybel on the History of the French Revolution enjoys so high a reputation in Germany that the Translator considers it unnecessary to make any apology for presenting it to the English Public. It has long been considered by the ablest historical critics to contain the most impartial account of that great Historical Drama, which is still unrolling before our eyes, and of which we have not yet seen the catastrophe. If the Author needed any justification for re-opening a subject of such universal interest, it would be found in the long list of documents contained in the following preface, all of which were first consulted by him, and most of them by him alone. His preliminary remarks are sufficient to show how justly he estimates the magnitude of the task he has undertaken, and with what patience, diligence, and good fortune, he has collected the great amount of fresh materials indispensable to its due performance; but only a perusal of the work itself will enable the reader to appreciate the far higher qualities of the genuine historian - the power of weighing evidence, and the impartiality of the just and fearless judge. Book The Four Wars of the French Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Four Wars of the French Revolution Classic Reprint written by David Urquhart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Four Wars of the French Revolution The Chief of the Catholic Church has declared that the abuse of military power is one of the causes of existing evils, which is equivalent to saying that it is necessary to restrain this power. The number of those who, in France, not only bear the name of Catholics, but profess obedience to the Holy See and reverence the person who occupies it, is very considerable. A small number amongst them would suffice to carry out the wishes of the Pope, if they accepted the duty and applied themselves to the task of comprehending how military power has become what it is at the present day: unlimited; as also the origin and the consequences of such a state of things, and the remedies of which it is susceptible. In a letter which I lately addressed to a French Review, I showed how the Crimean War originated, and what consequences have resulted from it; among which we must reckon the fall of the temporal Power of the Pope. It is very evident that if Catholics had foreseen this result, and, further, if they had known that that war was planned with this object, it could never have been made. It is not less evident that a war cannot be planned beforehand with an object totally different from its avowed and ostensible motive except in so far as the military power is in the hands of the executive, without being subjected to any sort of control, either in virtue of the law, or on the part of the nation, either by its knowledge of affairs or by its sentiment of justice.
