This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 Very different was the activity and success of their oppo nents, the Democrats. The plan of subjecting all the pro perty and civilisation of France to their will, which they had first promulgated after the l0th of August, and again during the month of December, was now to be brought into full operation by the new ascendancy which this party had acquired through the trial and execution of the king. As the middle class in Paris kept entirely aloof from politics, the sectional assemblies were only attended by a handful of proletaries, who commenced their sittings late in the evening after work hours, and faithfully represented that sovereignty of the people, whose dicta - according. To the doctrine of the J acobins were to be a binding law on the Convention. Care was taken that there should never be any want of orators or exciting themes of declamation: discussions were carried on till late in the night, on the worthlessness of the ministry and the Gironde - ou the intrigues of the Emigres, and the traitors at home - and above all, on the starvation of the poor, the hard-heartedness of the rich, and the means of extermin ating usurers and monopolists. As many articles were made dear by the stagnation of trade and the mass of as signats, there was reason enough for complaint; and the exasperation was increased by the thought that goods existed in plenty, and that they only had a higher price put on them by the merchants, or were altogether withdrawn from the market, in consequence of the uncertain value of the paper money. And thus a fresh outcry was raised against their grinding selfishness and it was again demanded that the State should decree low and fixed prices, and punish those who refused to sell their goods. The word was passed from section to section; wherever any opposition showed itself it was immediately suppressed by a number of resolute Federes; and on the 12th of February the first of those storm petitions - which were so terribly to characterize the year. 1793 - was presented to the Convention. Commissioners of the sections and the Federes, warmly supported by Marat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The A to Z of the French Revolution

Download or read book The A to Z of the French Revolution written by Paul R. Hanson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution remains the most examined event and period in world history. Most historians would argue that it was the first "modern" revolution, an event so momentous that it changed the very meaning of the word revolution to its current connotation of a political and/or social upheaval that marks a decisive break with the past, moving the society in a forward or progressive direction. No revolution has occurred since 1789 without making reference to this first revolution, and most have been measured against it. When revolution shook the foundations of the Old Regime in France, shock waves reverberated throughout the western world. The A to Z of the French Revolution examines the causes and origins; the roles of significant persons; crucial events and turning points; important institutions and organizations; and the economic, social, and intellectual factors involved in the event that gave birth to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the introduction of universal manhood suffrage, and the Napoleonic Empire. An introductory essay, chronology, and comprehensive bibliography complement the more than 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, making this a great resource for students and history enthusiasts alike.

Book The Transformation of Political Culture 1789 1848

Download or read book The Transformation of Political Culture 1789 1848 written by F. Furet and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-11-24 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in a much praised series on The French Revolution and the Creation of Modern Political Culture examines the way in which the Revolution has been portrayed in European thought and its impact upon the development of political philosophy in the nineteenth century. Opening with the influence of Burke and other contemporaries of the Revolution and the ensuing debate over the question "Why the Terror?", this volume explores such diverse themes as the legacy of the Revolution on the political and social evolution of Germany, England, Italy and Russia; the crisis it brought about in the Catholic Church; and the difficulties encountered in determining the end of the Revolution. By showing that the upheaval in European politics and philosophy caused by the French Revolution continued to shape nations, peoples and thought, the texts brought together in this volume permit a better understanding of the event's extraordinary complexity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 4 It has been said that the fall of the Bastille first revealed to France the weakness of her Government, and that the Government never recovered from the revelation. But, indeed, the weakness of the Government had revealed itself before: first, when it consented to summon the States-General, and again, even more flagrantly, when it failed to accept the challenge of Mirabeau, and to coerce a mutinous Third Estate at the point of the bayonet. The weakness of the Government was betrayed rather by the triumph of the Tennis Court than by the humiliation of the Bastille. The weakness of the Bastille proved the strength of the people. The taking of the Bastille is not remarkable as a military achievement; the pettiest war ever waged must needs bear witness to exploits far more illustrious in the eyes of the soldier and the strategist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 3: A History; The Guillotine Very frightful it is when a Nation, rending asunder its Con stitutions and Regulations which were grown dead cerements for it, becomes transcendental and must now seek its wild way through the New, Chaotic, - where Force is not yet distin guished into Bidden and Forbidden, but Crime and Virtue wel ter unseparated, - in that domain of what is called the Passions of what we call the Miracles and the Portents It is thus that, for some three years to come, we are to contemplate France, in this final Third Part of our History. Sansculottism reigning in all its grandeur and in all its hideousness the Gospel (god's message) of Man's Rights, Man's mn/zts or strengths, once more preached irrefragably abroad along with this, and still louder for the time, the fearfulest devil's-message of Man's weaknesses and sins - and all on such a scale, and under such aspect cloudy 'death-birth of a world huge smoke-cloud, streaked with rays as of heaven on one side; girt on the other as with hell-fire 1 History tells us many things but for the last thou sand years and more, what thing has she told us of a sort like this? Which therefore let us two, 0 Reader, dwell on willingly, for a little; and from its endless significance endeavour to ex tract what may, in present circumstances, be adapted for us.
