Book excerpt: In 1870 Bismarck ordered the Prussian Army to invade France, inciting one of the most dramatic conflicts in European history. It transformed not only the states-system of the Continent but the whole climate of European moral and political thought. The overwhelming triumph of German military might, evoking general admiration and imitation, introduced an era of power politics, which was to reach its disastrous climax in 1914. First published in 1961 and now with a new introduction, The Franco-Prussian War is acknowledged as the definitive history of one of the most dramatic and decisive conflicts in the history of Europe.

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franco-German War of 1870-71, Vol. 1 of 2 His purpose was to give a concise account of the war. But, while keeping this in view, he involun tarily - as was inevitable from his position - con templated the task from his own standpoint as Chief of the General Staff, and arranged events in connection with a' gen?ral scheme which could only be known at head-quarters. Thus this work, which was undertaken in all simplicity of purpose, as a popular history, isfbpractically from beginning to end the expressiofi of a private opinion of the war from the field-marshal himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franco-German War, 1870-71, Vol. 1: First Part: -History of the War to the Downfall of the Empire; From the Outbreak of Hostilities to the Battle of Gravelotte IN completing the translation of the first volume of the German Official Account of the Campaign of 1870 - 71, the translator would beg the indulgence of his readers for the many imperfections which are inherent in a work of this nature. Compiled, as the original has been, by officers of the German head-quarter staff, whose reputa tion with the pen is not less brilliant than that with the sword, and under the superintendence of Field Marshal Count v. Moltke himself, the account will ever remain a standard military cl. Esie of one of the most remarkable campaigns in the world's history. Although the translator feels that he has fallen far short of doing justice to the undertaking entrusted to him, he hopes that he has to some extent succeeded in his object, viz., that of giving a clear and accurate rendering of the German original, without any attempt at word-painting; with the addition of sufficient foot-notes to render the text intelligible without detracting from the originality of the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crushing victory by Prussia and her German allies in the Franco-Prussian War, 1870–71, destroyed one empire and created another. It finally unified the German states into an empire under Prussian leadership – an empire proclaimed in the very halls of captured Versailles. In 1870 Prussia's reformed mobilization system put enormous armies into the field with unprecedented efficiency. The confidence which the victory encouraged among German militarists, and the intolerable humiliation it inflicted upon France, ensured that an even more destructive war was soon inevitable. This, the first of two titles, lists and illustrates the units of Prussia and her North German Confederation, the powerhouse of a formidable military machine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870 when Bismarck engineered a war with the French Second Empire under Napoleon III. This was part of his wider political strategy of uniting Prussia with the southern German states, excluding Austria. The war was an overwhelming Prussian victory, and King Wilhelm I was proclaimed Emperor of the new united Germany. The Second Empire collapsed and Napoleon III became an exile in Britain. In the peace settlement with the French Third Republic in 1871 Germany gained the eastern French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, areas that were to provide a bone of contention for years to come.

Book Franco Prussian War 1870 1871 Volume 1

Download or read book Franco Prussian War 1870 1871 Volume 1 written by Quintin Barry and published by Helion and Company. This book was released on 2007-03-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this comprehensive study of the Franco-Prussian War presents a detailed account of Germany Confederation’s decisive victory over France. In the first part of this two-volume military history, Quintin Barry examines the war against the French Imperial Army waged by the armies of the German Confederation, directed by that supreme military mind, Helmuth von Moltke. Barry places Moltke and his strategic planning in the context of the European balance of power following the ending of the Austria Prussian War in 1866. He then explores the initial mobilization and deployment of the armies in 1870. All the battles of this opening round of the war are described in detail, including Weissenburg, Worth, Spicheren, Borny-Colombey, Mars la Tour, Gravelotte, Beaumont and, of course, Sedan. The book ends as the Second Empire of Napoleon III lies defeated, crushed by the German armies. Barry has made full use of an extensive number of German and French language sources. His detailed text is accompanied by a number of black and white illustrations and newly drawn battle maps. Orders of battle are also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Franco-German War of 1870-71 The origin of the book was as follows. I had several times entreated him, but in vain, to make use of his leisure hours at Greisau in noting down some of his rich store of reminiscences. He always objected, in the same words: Everything official that I have had occasion to write, or that is worth remembering, is to be seen in the Archives of the Staff Corps. My personal experiences had better be buried with me. He had a dislike to memoirs in general, which he was at no pains to conceal, saying that they only served to gratify the writer's vanity, and often contributed to distort im portant historical events by the subjective views of an individual, and the intrusion of trivial details. It might easily happen that a particular character which in history stood forth in noble simplicity should be hideously disfigured by the narrative of some per sonal experiences, and the ideal halo which had sur rounded it be destroyed. And highly characteristic of Moltke's magnanimity are the words he once uttered on such an occasion, and which I noted at the time: Whatever is published in a military history is always dressed for effect yet it is a duty of piety and patriot ism never to impair the prestige which identifies the glory of our Army with personages of lofty position.
