Book excerpt: Readers of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials will love Minu Freitag’s fast-paced contemporary fantasy adventure The Fragments, the first Book in The Spheres series. “Run!” Easla Amrath is lost in a broken world, haunted by a single memory–a scream in the dark, telling her to run. When 17-year-old Easla encounters the two years older Tayl Bergin in a strange forest, she has no idea who she is. Or where she is. Or why nothing makes any sense. Tormented by terrifying glimpses into a past she can no longer remember, Easla clings to one thought–she must go back and fix this. But to return to her life, she first must recover who she is and what she left behind. So Tayl and Easla embark on an increasingly perilous journey across the broken landscapes of the Fragments, where they discover how much of their past is entangled in an age-old conflict that threatens to destroy not only their future but the future of all worlds within the Spheres. The Fragments’ inventive take on alternate realities, arcane magic and dystopian futures is filled with unforgettable creatures and richly-imagined landscapes. The first book in this new, exciting series is a spellbinding, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends read.

Book The Annals of Quintus Ennius and the Italic Tradition

Download or read book The Annals of Quintus Ennius and the Italic Tradition written by Jay Fisher and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the multicultural influences on Quintus Ennius and his epic poem, the Annals. Quintus Ennius, often considered the father of Roman poetry, is best remembered for his epic poem, the Annals, a history of Rome from Aeneas until his own lifetime. Ennius represents an important bridge between Homer’s works in Greek and Vergil’s Aeneid. Jay Fisher argues that Ennius does not simply translate Homeric models into Latin, but blends Greek poetic models with Italic diction to produce a poetic hybrid. Fisher's investigation uncovers a poem that blends foreign and familiar cultural elements in order to generate layers of meaning for his Roman audience. Fisher combines modern linguistic methodologies with traditional philology to uncover the influence of the language of Roman ritual, kinship, and military culture on the Annals. Moreover, because these customs are themselves hybrids of earlier Roman, Etruscan, and Greek cultural practices, not to mention the customs of speakers of lesser-known languages such as Oscan and Umbrian, the echoes of cultural interactions generate layers of meaning for Ennius, his ancient audience, and the modern readers of the fragments of the Annals.

Book Kierkegaard on Sin and Salvation

Download or read book Kierkegaard on Sin and Salvation written by W. Glenn Kirkconnell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) is simultaneously one of the most obscure philosophers of the Western world and one of the most influential. His writings have influenced atheists and faithful alike. Yet despite his now pervasive influence, there is still widespread disagreement on many of the most important aspects of his thought. Kierkegaard was deliberately obscure in his philosophical writings, forcing his reader to interpret and reflect. But at the same time that Kierkegaard produced his esoteric, pseudonymous philosophical writings, he was also producing simpler, direct religious writings. Since his death the connections between these two sets of writings have been debated, ignored or denied by commentators. Here W. Glenn Kirkconnell undertakes a thorough examination of the two halves of Kierkegaard's authorship, demonstrating their ethical and religious relationship and the unifying themes of the signed and pseudonymous works. In particular the book examines Kierkegaard's understanding of the fall of the self and its recovery and the implications of his entire corpus for the life of the individual.
