Book The Fragments of Stesichorus Illustrated

Download or read book The Fragments of Stesichorus Illustrated written by Stesichorus of Metauros and published by Delphi Classics. This book was released on 2024-04-17 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the nine canonical lyric poets of Greek antiquity, Stesichorus flourished in the sixth century BC. He is best known for composing epic stories in lyric metres and for the colourful ancient traditions concerning his life. Scholars at Alexandria divided his verses into 26 books, which now only survive in fragments. The extant titles suggest themes from the traditional epic heritage found in mainland Greece and Asia Minor, as well as in Italy and Sicily. Stesichorus’ poetry broke with the epic tradition, in which a single performer declaimed verse in dactylic hexameters, as his lyric verses in the Doric dialect were accompanied by a stringed instrument. He completed the form of the choral ode by adding the epode to the strophe and antistrophe. Delphi’s Ancient Classics series provides eReaders with the wisdom of the Classical world, with both English translations and the original Greek texts. This eBook presents Stesichorus’ fragments, with illustrations and an informative introduction. (Version 1) * Beautifully illustrated with images relating to Stesichorus’ life and works * Features the fragments of Stesichorus, in both English translation and the original Greek * Concise introduction to the text * Includes J. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Sappho considers Sappho's poetry as a powerful, influential voice in the Western cultural tradition. Essays are divided into four sections: "Language and Literary Context," "Homer and Oral Tradition", "Ritual and Social Context", and "Women's Erotics". Contributors focus on literary history, mythic traditions, cultural studies, performance studies, recent work in feminist theory, and more. A legendary literary figure, Sappho has attracted readers, critics, and biographers ever since she composed poems on the island of Lesbos at the close of the seventh century B.C. Bringing together some of the best recent criticism on the subject, this volume, together with Re-Reading Sappho, represents the first anthology of Sappho scholarship, drawing attention to Sappho's importance as a poet and reflecting the diversity of critical approaches in classical and literary scholarship during the last several decades.

Book The Cambridge History of Classical Literature Volume 1 Greek Literature Part 1 Early Greek Poetry

Download or read book The Cambridge History of Classical Literature Volume 1 Greek Literature Part 1 Early Greek Poetry written by P. E. Easterling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-05-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from the eighth to the fifth centuries B.C. was one of extraordinary creativity in the Greek-speaking world. Poetry was a public and popular medium, and its production was closely related to developments in contemporary society. At the time when the city states were acquiring their distinctive institutions epic found the greatest of all its exponents in Homer, and lyric poetry for both solo and choral performance became a genre which attracted poets of the first rank, writers of the quality of Sappho, Alcaeus and Pindar, whose influence on later literature was to be profound. This volume covers the epic tradition, the didactic poems of Hesiod and his imitators, and the wide-ranging work of the iambic, elegiac and lyric poets of what is loosely called the archaic age. The contributors make use of recent papyrus finds (particularly in the case of Archilochus and Stesichorus) to fill out the picture of a cosmopolitan and highly sophisticated literary culture which had not yet found its intellectual centre in Athens.

Book Thirty two Stories

Download or read book Thirty two Stories written by Edgar Allan Poe and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's most influential literary figure worldwide is familiar to most readers of short fiction through only about a dozen stories. This is because many of Poe's tales depend on knowledge a reader in 1835 or 1845 might have had that a typical reader in 2000 would not. In this extensively annotated and meticulously edited selection of Poe's short fiction, Stuart Levine and Susan F. Levine connect Poe to major literary forces of his era and to the rapidly changing U.S. of the 1830s and 1840s, discussing Shelley, Carlyle, Byron, Emerson, and Hawthorne, as well as the railroad, photography, and the telegraph. In the process, they reveal a Poe immersed in the America of his day--its politics, science, technology, best-selling books, biases, arts, journalism, fads, scandals, and even sexual mores--and render accessible all thirty-two stories included here. The general Introduction, the headnote to each story, and the annotations included in this volume have been extensively revised from the editors' critically acclaimed editions of the complete short fiction: The Short Fiction of Edgar Allan Poe: An Annotated Edition (1976, 1990).
