Poor hounds! Why this wholesale condemnation of them, and why is the old saying, and such a true one, too, so frequently forgotten? Book The American Fox Hound Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American Fox Hound Classic Reprint written by Haiden C Trigg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Fox-Hound I have received of late years so many letter from parties who have come into possession of what has become known as the Trigg Dog, and from others desiring to secure them, that I have at last decided to write this book, intended as a brief history of my dogs and those of Messrs. Birdsong and Maupin from which the Trigg Dog originated. I shall be brief, confining myself to facts gathered from my personal acquaintance with both Mr. Birdsong and Mr. Maupin and their dogs, and from my numerous correspondence with these and other famous lovers of the chase, extending over thirty-five years. Some of the letters I have submitted herewith, believing they would be interesting and instructive to the new generation of sportsmen. I have the greatest confidence in the strains mentioned herein, but the different modes of hunting the fox in various sections require certain qualities to predominate; then, there are "as many men of many minds" as there are dogs of "high and low degree." I believe, after twenty-five years acquaintance with them, during which time I have tested their speed, nose, hunting qualities, etc., with representative dogs from nearly every famous pack of the country, and from the evidence of their worth as testified to by many letters from those who have run them after various game in other States, that I have a strain of dogs at least as good as those of their famous ancestors or any of to-day. I know from almost daily experience that I can run to earth or catch the red fox. To those of you who have my dogs, and to you who have other strains, we invite correspondence. I will be glad to exchange information, experiences, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Life of a Fox

Download or read book The Life of a Fox written by Thomas Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of a Fox: Written by Himself No Master of Foxhounds, alive or dead, has a greater right to be heard than Mr. Thomas Smith. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, and though it is not altogether true that the proof of the ability to show sport is the number of Foxes noses on the kennel door, the fact that Mr. Smith killed ninety Foxes in ninety-one days hunting in a Country which has no great reputation as a scenting country, is a piece of evidence in favour of his knowledge of woodcraft, and of his skill in applying it, which cannot be gainsaid, the more particularly when we take into account the epoch during which this remarkable feat was achieved. It is true that Mr. Smith hunted Hounds when the modern system of getting away close behind the Fox, and trying to burst him, had superseded the system that prevailed before 1750 of dragging up to the Fox and trying to hunt him down at the end of a long chase with Hounds that would have been beaten for pace in the first mile by those of Mr. Osbaldiston and Mr. Smith. But much of the contemporary evidence goes to show that Foxes were wilder in Mr. Smiths time in the sense that they probably had to travel long distances for their food, as there were fewer small coverts than exist to-day. Consequently there were fewer Foxes. It is true that these conditions were favourable to the Hounds in that their chance of changing Foxes was diminished. On the other hand the multiplication of small Fox coverts with artificial earths that has proceeded in the last fifty years makes the killing of a lot of Foxes, especially during the Cub-hunting, an easier matter than in the days of Mr. Thomas Smith. Book Fox and Hounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fox and Hounds Classic Reprint written by Edward William Dirom Cuming and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fox and Hounds Osbaldeston's hounds, in the year 1826, when that pack was at the height of its well-merited celebrity. Let us also indulge ourselves with a fine morning in the first week of February, and at least two hundred well-mounted men by the cover's side. Time being called - say a quarter past eleven, nearly our great grandfathers' dinner hour - the hounds approach the furze-brake, or the gorse, as it is called in that region. Hark in, hark! With a slight cheer, and perhaps one wave of his cap, says Mr. Osbaldeston,1 who long hunted his own pack, and in an instant he has not a bound at his horse's heels. In a very short time the gorse appears shaken in various parts of the cover -apparently from an unknown cause, not a single hound being for some minutes visible. Presently one or two appear, leaping over some old furze which they cannot push through, and exhibit to the field their glossy skins and spotted sides. Oh, you beauties! Exclaims some old Meltonian, rapturously fond of the sport. Two minutes more elapse; another hound slips out of a cover, and takes a short turn outside, with his nose to the ground and his stern lashing his side - thinking, no doubt, he might touch on a drag, should Reynard have been abroad in the night. Hounds have no business to think, thinks the second whipper-in, who observes him; but one crack of his whip, with Rasselas, Rasselas, Where are you going, Rasselas P Get to cover, Rasselas and Rasselas. Book Hounds Gentlemen Please Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hounds Gentlemen Please Classic Reprint written by W. B. Forbes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hounds, Gentlemen, Please IT is not very often, I think, that a sportsman who is not a Master of Hounds is more deeply interested in the breeding and pedigree lore of the foxhound than my old friend, the writer of these pages. That being the case, it was, perhaps, very natural that he should endeavour, by his writings, to create a wider interest in the foxhound in the minds of those who follow him - an interest which may induce them to give to that noble animal the fair play, when in chase, that he deserves - and by doing so help to lighten the burden of the who cannot be expected to attend to the hunting education of his field, in addition to his many other duties. In every Sport and in every game the beginner, however keen he may be, is bound to make mis takes. For instance, at polo, in his first season he will probably get a decision for off-side given against him, and so penalise his own side. A tyro at fishing will, to start with, no doubt muddle himself up with his own cast, or fix it firmly in the nearest tree. But it is reasonable to expect that after a year or two's experience, even though the beginner may not have arrived at the top of the tree in the particular branch of sport that he desires to follow, he will, at allvi hounds, gentlemen, please!
