Book The Fox and the Rose And Other Pagan Faerie Tales

Download or read book The Fox and the Rose And Other Pagan Faerie Tales written by Rebecca Buchanan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fairy Tale: a wonder tale or magic tale that typically features dwarfs, dragons, elves, fairies, mermaids, talking animals, trolls, unicorns, or witches, and usually magic or enchantments. Myth: a sacred story of the gods; a religious account of the beginning of the world; the deeds of Gods and heroes; as a result of which the world, nature, and culture were created and given order. The Fox and the Rose combines the best of both of these traditions, literary and spiritual, magical and mystical. Most of the tales in this collection follow the recognizable fairy tale scheme: once, in such-and-such a land, there lived ?. There are tests to pass and promises to keep and, if the hero proves worthy, a happily ever after is won. Sometimes, though, the endings are bittersweet or justly tragic, particularly when promises are broken, pride overrules compassion, and respect is denied.

Book excerpt: ONCE UPON A TIME, WHAT IF...What if the Sleeping Beauty left to make her own life? What if Bluebeard's wife seized the opportunity for justice? What if the witch truly loved Rapunzel? What if Snow White learned the virtues of right rulership from the dwarves, and Jack learned wisdom from the giants? In this provocative collection, Rebecca Buchanan (author of Asphalt Gods) re-examines classic fairy tales from Mother Goose, Aesop, the Brothers Grimm, and other sources with a sharp and modern eye, deepening the impact of the original tales and often inverting the perceived moral. These re-imaginings show us not-so-noble frog princes, environmentalist knights, wicked witches revealed as wise women, the cynical politics of fairy godmothers, and unexpected humanity in the hearts of monsters.Dig Deeper ? Twist The Tales Around ? Fairy Tales Are RevolutionaryIllustrated throughout with classic art by Harry Clarke, Walter Crane, Gustave Doré, Albrecht Dürer and others.". . . beautifully rich imagery and twists you won't see coming . . . there's both pain and triumph in these fairy tale renderings, where villains are the heroes and heroes more complex than you could ever imagine. Don't try to put this book down once you start it. Instead make yourself comfortable and settle in. It's quite a ride." --Gerri Leen, Rhysling and Pushcart Prize nominated poet"[These] poems crackle with blood and life, revenge and death, life and war, and many satisfying comeuppances. For those of you who, like me, have read countless fairy tale retellings, you'll be surprised at Buchanan's way of reimagining even the most famous stories. For those less immersed in the world of fairy tales, prepare to be entertained, dazzled, shocked, and woken up. Book The Irish Voice in America

Download or read book The Irish Voice in America written by Charles Fanning and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Charles Fanning has written the first general account of the origins and development of a literary tradition among American writers of Irish birth or background who have explored the Irish immigrant or ethnic experience in works of fiction. The result is a portrait of the evolving fictional self-consciousness of an immigrant group over a span of 250 years. Fanning traces the roots of Irish-American writing back to the eighteenth century and carries it forward through the traumatic years of the Famine to the present time with an intensely productive period in the twentieth century beginning with James T. Farrell. Later writers treated in depth include Edwin O'Connor, Elizabeth Cullinan, Maureen Howard, and William Kennedy. Along the way he places in the historical record many all but forgotten writers, including the prolific Mary Ann Sadlier. The Irish Voice in America is not only a highly readable contribution to American literary history but also a valuable reference to many writers and their works. For this second edition, Fanning has added a chapter that covers the fiction of the past decade. He argues that contemporary writers continue to draw on Ireland as a source and are important chroniclers of the modern American experience.

Book Ovid and the Politics of Emotion in Elizabethan England

Download or read book Ovid and the Politics of Emotion in Elizabethan England written by C. Fox and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-11-23 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabethan English culture is saturated with tales and figures from Ovid s Metamorphoses. While most of these narratives interrogate metamorphosis and transformation, many tales - such as those of Philomela, Hecuba, or Orpheus - also highlight heightened states of emotion, especially in powerless or seemingly powerless characters. When these tales are translated and retold in the new cultural context of Renaissance England, a distinct politics of Ovidian emotion emerges. Through intertextual readings in diverse cultural contexts, Ovid and the Politics of Emotion in Elizabethan England reveals the ways these representations helped redefine emotions and the political efficacy of emotional expression in sixteenth-century England.

Book The Old Songs of Skye

Download or read book The Old Songs of Skye written by Ethel Bassin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977. Frances Tolmie (1840-1926) was one of the foremost Gaelic folklore and folksong experts. This account of her life and work places her unique contribution to human song against a full personal, historical and cultural background. The book includes a selection of the songs she heard and wrote down, together with the part they played in her life and that of her circle and the larger community. Moving in a variety of circles, Frances Tolmie experienced the warm domesticity of an enlightened Skye manse, the cultural bustle of upper middle-class Edinburgh ‘entrepreneurs’, the romantic serious-mindedness of the first Cambridge women students, the sensitive nature-loving community round Ruskin at Coniston, and spent her later sociable years back in Scotland. This book, with its historical introduction by Flora MacLeod and musical introduction by Frank Howes along with Ethel Bassin's own detailed introduction, reflects her profound study of the song and folklore of her people, and describes how she recorded a precious part of British traditional culture, catching it alive and sharing it as truly as possible.
