In the winter of 1650/51 the Unity with John Law aboard arrived in Boston Harbor. He was in shackles, among dispirited men from different clans, a prisoner of Cromwell's war. The Unity's cargo was the first foreign drop of undesirables into a heretofore virgin sanctuary. Unlike John Winthrop a swarm of similar ilk would not follow after this John. Thus a teenage John Law, an outcast, an indentured prisoner began his life anew as an immigrant in a Puritan theocracy. Virtually alone, he faced life's challenges that we all must overcome as we mature. But events beyond his control and an intolerant theocracy provided added hurdles. Through all of John's ordeals he wondered if God ever heard him. One day God did. More than a historical narrative, The Immigrant like a perfectly steamed artichoke has many meaningful layers to savor.
