Book excerpt: "McKnight distinguishes associations from not-for-profit corporations, though they are often combined as the third leg of a "three-legged stool," the other legs being business and government. He points out their differences: not-for-profit corporations are usually formal and hierarchical, whereas associations tend to be informal and horizontal; not-for-profits use the special knowledge of professionals and experts to perform their functions, while associations generally use the experience and knowledge of member citizens. Society, McKnight argues, is actually like a four-legged stool, with associations being the fourth support. However, our focus on the three institutional legs has obscured the presence and vitality of the fourth." --Kettering Foundation web site

She found herself asking such questions as Why me? Does God still love me? How can I survive this? In the midst of her sorrow, she learned that these questions are common among those who grieve or are facing troubles; more than that, how we answer them has a great impact on our growth and development as human beings. Personal growth is challenging, especially by todays standards. In Four Legs of the Stool, Sue shares the lessons she learned and demonstrates how to apply them to our daily lives, offering thoughts, insights, and strategies for understanding these life lessons and striving to achieve personal development. She considers suffering, dying, healing, and joy; she explores how to survive when your world has changed irrevocably. If you have ever felt alone, wondered if God was still with you during trials in your life, or wondered how youd be able to go on after drastic changes in your life, Four Legs of the Stool will provide you with the thought-provoking answers that you need to carry on.

Book Artifacts from Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Artifacts from Ancient Egypt written by Barbara Mendoza and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary source documents and detailed entries reveal what ancient Egypt was like, using the objects and artifacts of daily life from the period covering the Predynastic era through the Græco-Roman period (5000 BCE to 300 CE). Historians have found that valuable knowledge about long-ago civilizations can be derived from examining the simple routines of daily life. This fascinating study presents a collection of everyday objects and artifacts from ancient Egypt, shedding light on the social life and culture of ancient Egyptians. The work starts with a popular notion of ancient Egyptian beauty and gradually moves on to address various aspects of life, including home, work, communication, and transition and afterlife. Organized by topics, the work contains the following sections: beauty, adornment, and clothing; household items, furniture, and games; food and drink; tools and weapons; literacy and writing; death and funerary equipment; and religion, ritual, and magic. Each object holds equal importance and dates from the Predynastic era to the Græco-Roman period of ancient Egypt (5000 BCE to 300 CE). A special section provides guidance on evaluating objects and artifacts by asking questions—Who created it? Who used it? What did it do/what was its purpose? When and where was it made? Why was it made?—to help assess the historical context of the object.

Book The Immigrant

Download or read book The Immigrant written by Alfred Woollacott, III and published by . This book was released on 2014-07-04 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1630 the Arbella carrying its leader, John Winthrop, and families from same parishes arrived in Boston Harbor. They were united in religious purpose, supported by Lord Cromwell and inspired to begin life anew. A Great Migration ensued and the wilderness was carved to their specifications, a covenant with God was crafted and fledgling settlements grew into a Puritan theocracy. In the winter of 1650/51 the Unity with John Law aboard arrived in Boston Harbor. He was in shackles, among dispirited men from different clans, a prisoner of Cromwell's war. The Unity's cargo was the first foreign drop of undesirables into a heretofore virgin sanctuary. Unlike John Winthrop a swarm of similar ilk would not follow after this John. Thus a teenage John Law, an outcast, an indentured prisoner began his life anew as an immigrant in a Puritan theocracy. Virtually alone, he faced life's challenges that we all must overcome as we mature. But events beyond his control and an intolerant theocracy provided added hurdles. Through all of John's ordeals he wondered if God ever heard him. One day God did. More than a historical narrative, The Immigrant like a perfectly steamed artichoke has many meaningful layers to savor.

Book A critical engagement with theological education in Africa

Download or read book A critical engagement with theological education in Africa written by Johannes J. Knoetze and published by AOSIS. This book was released on 2022-02-07 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The higher education landscape has arguably become one of the most arduous to traverse. More so in the African context, where a host of variables continiously challenge educators to reflect critically on their philosophies and practices as they engage an ever-changing audience. In this book, a critical engagement with theological education in Africa is offered. As the book originates from South Africa, it is presented as a South African perspective, although contributors are situated accross the African continent and abroad. The common denominator is that all contributers are, in some way or another, invested in theological education in Africa. The main contribution of this collaborative work is to be sought in the insights it offers on four main areas of theological education: A historical and current orientation on theological edcuation in Africa, some paradigm shifts in theological education in Africa, ministerial formation needs versus theological education challenges, and a critical reflection on elective models and methods. The book presents the original and innovative research of scholars for fellow scholars involved in theological higher education as it is grounded in the respective fields of interest of each contributor. It contributes to a better understanding of the complex African theological higher education landscape that is also mindful of post-COVID-19 realities. Methodologically the work draws on a combination of methods, including literature studies, empirical work, and in some cases sectional offerings from doctoral studies, as indicated in the various chapters.

Book African Hermeneutics

  • Author : Elizabeth Mburu
  • Publisher : Langham Publishing
  • Release : 2019-02-28
  • ISBN : 1783685387
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book African Hermeneutics written by Elizabeth Mburu and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretation of Scripture occurs within one’s worldview and culture, which enhances our understanding and ability to apply Scripture in the world. However, few books address Bible interpretation from an African perspective and no other textbook uses the intercultural approach found here. This book brings both an awareness of how one’s African context gives a lens to hermeneutics, but also how to interpret texts with integrity despite our cultural influences. African Hermeneutics was born of Prof Elizabeth Mburu’s frustration at only having textbooks that predominantly followed a Western worldview to teach her African students. Mburu’s approach to hermeneutics is one that begins in Africa, moving from the known to the unknown as students learn to apply her ‘four-legged stool model’ to biblical texts, namely examining: the parallels to African contexts, the theological context, the literary context, and the historical and cultural context. This textbook will help students and pastors interpret Scripture with greater accuracy in their own context, allowing for faithful application in their local contexts.
