Book The Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel

Download or read book The Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel written by Andrew H. Plaks and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2025-03-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new interpretation of some of the great works of Chinese fiction of the late Ming dynasty In this book, Andrew Plaks reinterprets the great texts of Chinese fiction known as the “Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel” (ssu ta ch'i-shu). Arguing that these are far more than collections of popular narratives, Plaks shows that their fullest critical revisions represent a sophisticated new genre of Chinese prose fiction arising in the late Ming dynasty, especially in the sixteenth century. He then analyzes these radical transformations of prior source materials, which reflect the values and intellectual concerns of the literati of the period.

Book People Jen State and Inter state Relations

Download or read book People Jen State and Inter state Relations written by Huipeng Shang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-18 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between the “human constant” (Jen) of the four large-scale civilizational societies—China, the USA, Japan, and India—and their international behavior, response patterns, and interaction with the international system. The book analyzes the characteristics and limitations of the current international system, as well as the way it is related to the Western type of “human constant”. It also analyzes the challenges facing China in its integration into the international system. This book aims to explore international relations from the combined psychological and cultural perspective. The key concept of this book is “Jen”, which contains a distinct Chinese cultural experience, into the theory of international relations. Unlike other IR books to treat state as the main political actor, the book analyzes both the political aspects of state as an “organizational entity” and its civilizational aspects as a “civilizational entity”; hence, it proposes a new ontology of international relations. By integrating the concept of “Jen” based on the unique Chinese cultural experience into the theory of international relations, the book reveals the interactive nature of relationship between the international system and “human constant”. The book explains the causal relationship between state’s behavior and its “human constant”, analyzes the cultural characteristics of state actors and the international system, and tries to provide a new theoretical framework for understanding culture and modernity.

Book excerpt: A young couple's toxic Instagram crush spins out of control and unleashes a sinister creature in this twisted, viciously funny, "bananas good" story (Carmen Maria Machado). "Um, holy shit...This novel will be the most fun you'll have this summer." —Emily Temple, Literary Hub Remy and Alicia, a couple of insecure service workers, are not particularly happy together. But they are bound by a shared obsession with Jen, a beautiful former co-worker of Remy’s who now seems to be following her bliss as a globe-trotting jewelry designer. In and outside the bedroom, Remy and Alicia's entire relationship revolves around fantasies of Jen, whose every Instagram caption, outfit, and new age mantra they know by heart. Imagine their confused excitement when they run into Jen, in the flesh, and she invites them on a surfing trip to the Hamptons with her wealthy boyfriend and their group. Once there, Remy and Alicia try (a little too hard) to fit into Jen’s exalted social circle, but violent desire and class resentment bubble beneath the surface of this beachside paradise, threatening to erupt. As small disturbances escalate into outright horror, we find ourselves tumbling with Remy and Alicia into an uncanny alternate reality, one shaped by their most unspeakable, deviant, and intoxicating fantasies. Is this what “self-actualization” looks like? Part millennial social comedy, part psychedelic horror, and all wildly entertaining, A Touch of Jen is a sly, unflinching examination of the hidden drives that lurk just outside the frame of our carefully curated selves.

With humor, fierceness and generosity, The Off-Season grapples with the question of how to be in the world.

Book The Korean Neo Confucianism of Yi Yulgok

Download or read book The Korean Neo Confucianism of Yi Yulgok written by Young-chan Ro and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1988-07-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the philosophical and religious dimensions of Korean Neo-Confuciansim as expounded by one of the foremost Korean Neo-Confucian thinkers, Yi Yulgok (1536-1584). Yulgok's creative interpretations reformulate some fundamental issues of Confucian philosophy. This book explores the significance of the fundamental assumption which underlies the entire system of Yulgok's Confucian thought. That philosophical assumption is characterized by the author as 'non-dualistic' and 'anthropocosmic'. It is a unique aspect of Korean Neo-Confucianism which leads to a new way of understanding the Confucian world view and spirituality. This 'non-dualistic' vision sheds a new and critical light on the dialectical framework of thinking at work in Western formulations of understanding the ultimate reality, nature, the universe, and human being. The 'anthropocosmic' vision in this respect will challenge fundamental assumptions of Western theological formulation and suggest a new understanding of human nature and the universe. A 'non-dualistic' and 'anthropocosmic' interpretation of Yulgok's thought is a fruitful way of approaching the Korean way of thinking and of coming to grips with one Neo-Confucian mode of attaining human self-understanding.

Book Wang Kuo wei s Jen chien Tz u hua

Download or read book Wang Kuo wei s Jen chien Tz u hua written by A.A. Rickett and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1977-09-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decade of the twentieth century while other intellectuals were concerned with translating works of political and scientific import into Chinese, Wang Kuo-wei (1877-1927) looked to Western philosophy to find answers to the fundamental questions of human life. He was the first Chinese to translate Schopenhauer and Nietzsche into Chinese and to apply their views of aesthetics to Chinese literature. The influence of their concepts of genius and the sublime can easily be seen in his J en-chien tz'u-hua 人間詞話. Wang was also indebted to Chinese critics for the development of his theories regarding the sphere of individuality that each poem represents (ching-chieh), a theory that places him among the ranks of China's greatest literary critics. Innovative as he was in his concepts of poetry, however, Wang chose to convey those concepts in the traditional form of poetic criticism, the tz'u-hua, or "talks on poetry." Thus this translation of the complete edition of his Jen-chien tz'u-hua not only adds to the Westerner's knowledge of Chinese literary criticism but also provides insight into the way in which Chinese communicated with each other about their literature.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I met Marco at the restaurant where we both worked. I was a waitress to make the money that did not seem to be materializing from my acting and modeling careers. Two years out of college, I had quit my job as an analyst at a hedge fund and decided to become a full-time actor. #2 At the end of the training, we went to a local dive bar two blocks away. I sat next to Marco, and we began talking about our relationships. I thought, I am going to marry that man. It was a quick, involuntary thought, and I recoiled as soon as it had passed through my mind. #3 I met a man named Marco at a bar, and we ended up talking for hours. I felt like I was speaking only for him, and I was aware of his intense eyes on me the entire time. I told him about my parents, who were the parents that my friends wished they had. #4 I met a man named Marco, who was from Argentina, and we began to talk. He was very open about his past, and I found it fascinating. I wanted to know everything about him, but in the next moment, he cleared his throat and smiled. I think they’re closing up. You better go inside right now.

Download or read book Dialogues with Jen written by Donald R. Fletcher and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dialogues with Jen: On Issues of Daily Living, five friends, representing three generations, get together to discuss contemporary topics that touch their lives. The six dialogues unfold dramatically, reflecting situations of the participants, who share personal insights, sometimes surprisingly. Jen, the senior member, suggests the lead topic of romantic love, and the discussion moves from carnal attraction to conscious, purposeful love, citing Shakespeare’s “marriage of two minds.” Events of the tragic death of one member’s sister and a terrorist attack witnessed by another member lead them to consider guilt, justice, and forgiveness. The dialogues are deeply rooted in spirituality, while not specific to any particular religious tradition. The author loosely draws on the classic Dialogues of Plato to develop arguments through the exchange of ideas of his fictional characters. This book is a sequel to Dialogues with Jay: On Life and Afterlife, but can be read independently.
