Book Elementary Treatise on Military Science and the Art of War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Treatise on Military Science and the Art of War Classic Reprint written by Herbert Everett Tutherly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Treatise on Military Science and the Art of War The following lectures have been prepared as a military science course in the University, to meet the requirements of the "theoretical instruction" prescribed in General Order No. 93, Adjutant's General's Office, series 1893, for institutions of learning receiving the detail of an Army Officer to act as professor of military science and tactics. The lectures have been prepared upon the assumption that students have drilled one year and have become proficient in infantry drill regulations to include battalion movements, and in artillery drill regulations to include the "School of the Cannoneers." These lectures will be bound in three "parts," Part I being intended as a text-book for sophomores, Part II for juniors and Part III for seniors. These books may also be found useful to National Guard Officers, and Noncommissioned Officers, as they constitute a progressive course, leading up from armory drill to battle tactics. Preface to Second Edition. In this edition the three "parts" are hound as one book of 12 chapters for use as a text-book for volunteer troops as well as national guardsmen and military colleges; - it having been suggested by officers who have used the separate "parts" of the first edition, that the twelve lectures, taken together, afford a complete elementary course for those who are hastily preparing for military service, and just what they need to go with "drill regulations." The appendix contains some practical lessons gathered from my recent service with our Army in Cuba. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Wars of the Century and the Development of Military Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wars of the Century and the Development of Military Science Classic Reprint written by Oscar Browning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wars of the Century and the Development of Military Science No account of the Nineteenth Century would be complete without a narrative of its wars which are not inferior in interest to any which History records. The campaigns of Napoleon are not only replete with instruction for the military student, but are full of striking dramatic incidents, and from the marvellous personality of the principal actor in them exercise a fascination over the mind of the reader independent of his sympathies. The War of Secession in America touches us nearly both from the science and heroism displayed in it, and from the fact that the two combatants were of the same race and language, while the great War of 1870 must remain far many years the classical example of every branch of the military art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New World of Science: Its Development During the War The bearing of such varied and productive goes far beyond the immediate issues of war. And reaches down to the very foundations of national welfare. The problems of peace are inextricably entangled with those of war, and if scientific methods and the aid of scientific research were needed in overcoming the menace of the enemy they will be no less urgently needed during the turmoil of reconstruction and the future competitions of peace. Remember the case of the aniline dyes. The first of which. Mauve. Was discovered by Sir William Perkin in 1856. Here, as in so many other instances, a great achievement of British initiative met with no recognition from the home government. And the fruits of Perkin's discovery were gathered abroad. Aniline. From which mauve is derived. Is one of the products of coal-tar. Formerly regarded as useless waste. Thousands of chemists. Thoroughly infused with the spirit of research in the German universities, and supported by great corporations. Enjoying the powerful encouragement of the Government. Have built upon this foundation the great dye industry of Germany. The basic processes involved in the preparation of the dyes are precisely those required for the manufacture of tri-nitm toluol and other high explosives. Thus the German govern ment. Bent on its preparations for war. Quite naturally developed an industry that brought great commercial prosperity and at the same time provided the factories. Equipment. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the Art and Science of War and Their Application in Modern Warfare: With Remarks on the Handling of Troops on the Field of Battle, as at Present Practiced The idea of preparing this work occurred to me during the course of instruction in Mahan's Outpost at this school last fall. The above text-book having been published before the introduction of breech loading weapons, and previous to the modifications in tactics made necessary by their introduction, as exemplified in recent wars, it is desirable that some of the principles developed during the progress of these wars should be embraced in a preliminary study of the Art of War. It is hoped that this result will to some extent be accomplished by this volume, which is a compilation from the best works bearing on these subjects, embodying the principles deduced from a study of the history of these wars, and the opinions of many active participants in them who are considered to be authorities on the questions they have considered. Book The Foundations of Strategy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Strategy Classic Reprint written by Henry Melvill Johnstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Strategy Foundations are broad and solid, but do not exhibit much detail. The art of Strategy, fully described, would be the work of a lifetime, and from its very bulk would be the despair of a publisher. But the foundations can be drawn on a reasonable expanse of paper. The object of this preface is to justify the creation of the new technical phrase, Full Strength, which is the comer-stone of this book. It is recognised every where that there is a master principle for success in war. Various efforts have been made to express this principle. Surprise and the initiative are the secret of success in war is one of these efforts. But this is not the real foundation, for you may gain all the advantage of surprise and still fail to produce as great a relative strength as was possible. Economy of force on secondary objects is another effort. This is good as far as it goes, but it does not cover the ground. You may operate in so correct a manner with regard to detachments that you have everything available for the decisive collision, While omitting to take measures that would prevent the enemy having a similar totality of available strength.
