Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty-Second Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan for the Year 1912 The year That has gone by has been one where many of us have met our "Waterloo" and I feel sometimes as though in many respects we have been a failure in another way. Personally I feel that way, and especially as by my advice a good many in years past have been induced to go into the apple business and today they are plying me with questions and advice as to how they can get out of the orchard business what they were to believe was in it but which they have been unable to secure. This past year they have raised their apples; they have got fruit but there are no buyers in the field, and they do not know what to do with their products. This is not the condition that is peculiar to our own state alone, it is general. Orchardists of other states have met with the same difficult I cannot believe that the comparatively few hundreds of people who have been induced to go into this business have been able to raise so much fruit that there is such an enormous over-production as to cause the present low price. Especially do I think so when there are right here in our own country ninety-five million of people to eat it for nine months of the year. The whole trouble I believe is that there is something wrong in the marketing. If we can do anything to help that end of the problem it is the thing we must do. We must try to get at the bottom of this matter and inaugurate some plans or methods by which our fruits can be marketed and we receive something like a price commensurate with the costs of production. This will probably all come out later in the discussion and now without any further words go on and take up the first thing on the program. Before we take up the regular program, the first topic for consideration is: "How Best to Feed the Apple Orchard," by Mr. Luther E. Hall, of Ionia, who will address you. Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - When your Secretary asked me to prepare something on this topic, he intimated that he would like to have it very brief and to the point. Now the topic of feeding the apple orchard may be made very brief, and I will try to be brief, but I hope I may be able to contribute a few hints that may help in feeding the apple orchard so as to get it to a condition of productiveness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forty-Fourth Annual Report of the Secretary of the State Horticultural Society of Michigan for the Year 1914 Closely connected to the subject of location is the proper choice of varieties, as I am led to believe by experience and also by observation that certain varieties are better suited for some locations than other varieties. In other words, it is a point in profitable peach production to consider the adaptability of the commercial varieties to our particular site. The ability to do this is best obtained by previous experience with the varieties upon the same land, thus a new beginner must necessarily be somewhat handicapped in this part of the work. To illustrate this point, I refer to the Engle Mammoth variety. With us this has always been one of the best commercial varieties, yet with some growers ln our vicinity it has given very unsatisfactory results. We have certain locations upon our farm where the Elberta has been without an equal and yet in some other places upon the same farm this variety has not been profitable. Those varieties which are inclined to bear heavily should be chosen for the land that is abundant in fertility as they re quire this sort of a condition in order to maintain their vigor and health. We are commencing to perceive that there is more to the choice of varieties than the consideration of the market qualities. It is not profit able to devote all of the orchard to one variety and then lose a large amount of fruit because of the inability to obtain sufficient help to handle the crop. It is better to use more varieties and thus distribute the harvest over a longer period of time. Pruning and thinning are two Operations widely different in the time and mode of application yet very similar in the results that are sought. Pruning is done to shape the tree while young. But, as it becomes older, the pruning is continued in order to maintain bearing wood near the ground, produce fruit of the best quality and to conserve the vitality of the tree. Thinning is also necessary in order to produce fruit of the best quality and to maintain the vigor and producing power 'of the tree. Varieties which bear heavily and regularly must be pruned and thinned severely, while those sorts which are not inclined to be so prolific require more gentle treatment. The market demands a peach of large size in order to insure a good price, and proper pruning and thinning are neces sary in order to produce this kind of fruit.
