Book excerpt: Daniel Defoe's 'The Fortunate Mistress' is a groundbreaking work of literature that provides a unique perspective on the role of women in 18th-century society. The novel follows the life of Roxana as she navigates the complexities of love, power, and survival in a male-dominated world. Defoe's style is characterized by its realistic portrayal of urban life and its moral ambiguity, setting it apart from other novels of the time. The novel's exploration of themes such as class, gender, and morality make it a compelling read for those interested in the social issues of the period. Defoe's use of first-person narration adds a personal touch to the story, immersing the reader in Roxana's world and innermost thoughts. The vivid descriptions and psychological depth of the characters make 'The Fortunate Mistress' a classic work of English literature that continues to resonate with readers today.

Download or read book The Fortunate Mistress Vol 1 of 2 written by Daniel Defoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortunate Mistress, Vol. 1 of 2: Or a History of the Life of Mademoiselle De Beleau, Known by the Name of the Lady Roxana I have said that in The Fortunate Mistress Defoe has come nearer than usual to writing what we to day call a novel; the reason is that he has had more success than usual in making his characters real. Though many of them are still wooden - lifeless types, rather than individuals yet the Prince, the Quakeress, and the Dutch merchant occasionally wake to life; so rather more does the unfortunate daughter; and more yet, Amy and Roxana. With the exception of Moll Flanders, these last two are more vitalised than any personages Defoe invented. In this pair, furthermore, Defoe seems to have been interested in bringing out the contrast between characters. The servant, Amy, thrown with another mistress, might have been a totally different woman. The vulgarity of a servant she would have retained under any circumstances, as she did even when pro moted from being the maid to being the companion of Roxana; but it was unreasoning devotion to her mistress, combined with weakness of character, which led Amy to be vicious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fortunate Mistress, Vol. 2 of 2: Or a History of the Life of Mademoiselle De Beleau, Known by the Name of the Lady Roxana After my coming to England I was greatly desirous to hear how things stood with them, and whether they were all alive or not, and in what 'manner they had been maintained; and yet I resolved not to discover myself to them in the least, or to let any of the people that had the breeding of them up know that there was such a body left in the world as their mother. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Roxana: The Fortunate Mistress" is a 1724 novel by Daniel Defoe. It is the autobiography of a woman who gives up her virtue for survival initially, then for fame and fortune later. It has been called a post-feminist work, examining the contemporary patriarchal society through the enterprising and independent character of Roxana before a feminist ideology had been fully formed. Daniel Defoe (1660 - 1731), was an English trader, journalist, writer, pamphleteer, and spy best known for his novel "Robinson Crusoe." He was a prolific writer, producing over five hundred books, journals, and pamphlets on a variety of topics ranging from religion, politics, and crime to psychology and the supernatural. Defoe is recognised as being among the earliest pioneers of the novel and as being one of the founders of the English novel. This classic novel is highly recommended for all lovers of the English language. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of erotic literature.
