Book excerpt: The Old Testament quotations in the Gospel of Mt can be studies in different ways, and from various points of view. We may, with Stendahl, study the text-type of these quotations, so as to find out their milieu of origin and eventually the Sitz im Leben of the Gospel itself. Or we may, as Strecker and now Rothfuchs have done, examine the function of the quotations in the Gospel narrative, and so gain a new insight into Matthew's theology. Or again, we may, like Gundry, compare the meaning which the OT passages quoted now have in their new Matthean context with their original literal sense, in order to justify the way in which Matthew handles his OT texts. None of these points of view in ours in the examination of the specialized group of OT quotations in Mt's Infancy Narrative that we undertake here. Neither the text- type of these quotations, nor their function, nor the hermeneutics of their use, is our primary concern. Instead, we are interested in their context. Our aim is to study the way in which these quotations have been integrated into the Infancy Narrative, in the hope that this will throw light on its tradition history: show us, that is, the sources which Matthew may have used in composing his narrative, nad the way in which he has adapted and integrated them.

Book Marked Quotations from Psalms in the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book Marked Quotations from Psalms in the Gospel of Matthew written by Piotr Herok and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are five marked quotations from Psalms in the Gospel of Matthew. These are: (1) Ps 91:1–12 in Matt 4:6; (2) Ps 78:2 in Matt 13:35; (3) Ps 8:3 in Matt 21:16; (4) Ps 118:22–23 in Matt 21:42; and (5) Ps 110:1 in Matt 22:44. Piotr Herok argues that the investigated texts are related to each other not only by the presence of the introductory formulas, making clear that a given citation comes from Scripture, but also through mutual thematic convergence, concerning in various degrees king David, the temple, and the theme of Jesus' identity. Thanks to the new literary context, in which the quotations are embedded, Matthew reinterprets them significantly while giving them a new dimension clearly distinguishing them from the rest of the psalm quotations found in his work. This aims at presenting Jesus as not only the Son of David, but first of all the Son of God.

Book Studies in Matthew s Gospel

Download or read book Studies in Matthew s Gospel written by W.J.C. Weren and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-28 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Studies in Matthew’s Gospel by Wim J.C. Weren are the result of scholarly work carried out using recent methods in Biblical exegesis such as structural analysis, text semantics and intertextuality. Part One presents a new proposal regarding the macrostructure of Matthew’s Gospel and discusses meanings of textual units from this Gospel on the basis of synchronic research. In Part Two, intertextual theories are described and practical tools are developed that enable us to identify various types of relations between texts from Matthew’s Gospel and co-generic or co-thematic textual units from the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint and early Jewish and early Christian writings. Part Three answers the question to what extent the ways in which the disciples are portrayed in Matthew is related to ‘real’ groups in the Matthean communities. The three successive steps are deliberately chosen and are in a complementary relationship to each other.

Download or read book The Vision of Matthew written by John P. Meier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Father Meier explores how Matthew remodeled the form, the Christological message, and the moral demand of the gospel. Part I shows Matthew's church in crisis. It was experiencing a shift in its Christian existence: from a narrow Jewish-Christian past to a universal Gentile future. To preserve yet reinterpret the particularistic traditions of that Jewish-Christian past, Matthew drew up a model of salvation history and then reshaped the gospel message to fit it. Part II offers a mini-commentary on the whole gospel to illustrate this reshaping of the message. Pericope by pericope, Matthew presents Jesus as Son of God and Son of Man, and therefore as 'the' definitive teacher of his Church. Indeed, the nexus between Christ and his Church emerges as the outstanding characteristic of Matthew's gospel. Part III studies Matthew's construction of a unified moral vision on the basis of this connection between Christ and Church. The basic stance of Jesus and his disciples towards the Mosaic Law is one of fulfillment - a 'prophetic' fulfillment which involves at times a deepening of, at times the abrogation of, the letter of the Law.

Book Translation Theory and the Old Testament in Matthew

Download or read book Translation Theory and the Old Testament in Matthew written by Woojin Chung and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Translation Theory and the Old Testament in Matthew, Woojin Chung employs a rigorous method of Skopos theory to examine Matthew’s citation technique in his infancy narrative and locates the specific purpose of his use of Scripture. He argues that the complex nature of the formulaic quotations and allusion in Matthew 1‒2 can be understood in light of new methodological insights. The way Matthew cites the Old Testament for his communicative purpose is congruent to the approach of a Skopos translator who is motivated by a specific purpose of translation. The theory of interpretation of his use of Scripture, therefore, can be informed by the theory and method of translation.

Book Matthew s Presentation of the Son of David

Download or read book Matthew s Presentation of the Son of David written by H. Daniel Zacharias and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Daniel Zacharias presents a literary-critical analysis of the Gospel of Matthew and its interaction with Davidic tradition and use of Davidic typology. Throughout the narrative, the evangelist makes pervasive use of Davidic tradition from the Old Testament in his portrayal of Jesus. This begins from the first verse and the declaration that Jesus is the Son of David, and culminates in Jesus' usage of Psalm 22's Davidic lament on the cross. Davidic material is present throughout Matthew, in allusion, in specific citations, in thematic material. In addition, Matthew makes use of Davidic typology numerous times, with David as type and Jesus as anti-type. Zacharias shows how the use of Davidic material presents to the reader a scripturally-grounded redefinition of what it means for Jesus to be the Son of David: not as a violent militant leader, as some expected, but as a physical descendant of David, a healing shepherd, and a humble king. Within the Gospel, Matthew utilizes Davidic typology to show how the Son of David even has similar experiences as his royal predecessor. Even David's own words from the psalms are utilized as testimony to the legitimacy of Jesus as the Davidic Messiah.
