Book excerpt: Gathering and interpreting material that is not readily available elsewhere, this book discusses the thought of the Japanese Buddhist philosophers Dogen, Hisamatsu, and Nishitani. Stambaugh develops ideas about the self culminating in the concept of the Formless Self as formulated by Hisamarsu in his book The Fullness of Nothingness and the essay "The Characteristics of Oriental Nothingness," and further explicated by Nishitani in his book Religion and Nothingness. These works show that Oriental nothingness has nothing to do with the nineteenth- and twentieth-century Western concept of nihilism. Instead, it is a positive phenomenon, enabling things to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Be Formless means to become something without a form. It's to live a life without limits, without validation from others, and become fearless. Too often, we lived in a world where we're boxed in and blocked off. We block ourselves of our full potential because of fear within, and fear of what others may think about us. We live in a world where people are too afraid to step out of their comfort zones and become the person they're designed to be. We instead, live life through illusions and filters to block the true essence of who we are. We rather live life seeking validation and acceptance of others to feel self-fulfilled. In the end, we're all human, we have flaws, we suffer, we strive, and we live. You matter through it all. Don't change who you are because you don't know who you can become until you stretch out and reach the sky.

What will follow is a life in which you have complete control, a higher level of consciousness, and a stronger connection to your inner true self. Take your time and read each sentence carefully. Consider reading some chapters more than once, perhaps even multiple times. Allow your soul to digest the information it is receiving and the wisdom it is revealing. Where you take it is up to you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're used to thinking about the self as an independent entity, something that we either have or are. In The Ego Tunnel, philosopher Thomas Metzinger claims otherwise: No such thing as a self exists. The conscious self is the content of a model created by our brain - an internal image, but one we cannot experience as an image. Everything we experience is ''a virtual self in a virtual reality.'' But if the self is not ''real,'' why and how did it evolve? How does the brain construct it? Do we still have souls, free will, personal autonomy, or moral accountability? In a time when the science of cognition is becoming as controversial as evolution, The Ego Tunnel provides a stunningly original take on the mystery of the mind.

Book excerpt: Have you had a realisation of your true nature? Have you seen yourself to be the formless awareness? Many of us are having such revelations of our true Self and yet few come to live and move in the world as the Sage does. We must deeply assimilate what it means to be formless and allow that knowledge to pervade our entire consciousness. Questions such as "How can I come to know that I cannot die?" and "How do I live from this place of truth?" begin to become very important to us. In this book we will look at specific points of contemplation that are designed to help us come to know beyond doubt that to be formless means we cannot die, we cannot suffer and we are infinite. It is one thing to have seen what we truly are and another thing altogether to have totally transcended any doubts, fears and challenges to living as this formlessness. This book embodies the process that every awakened being has gone through and will direct you to contemplate important questions that will allow you to let go of all doubt and fear. Many Saints, Teachers and Sages advise us to "stay as the Self" or "be the awareness" but this teaching can be vague when we need it most. Think of this book as a road map or signpost to the fully lived awakened state of Being. It is the distilled down essence of every Sages journey and it will allow you to bring forth the Sage that is in you right now. This book is the answer to every students question of "How do I live as this?"

Download or read book Zen and the Modern World written by Masao Abe and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of Japan's foremost contemporary thinkers and scholars, Zen and Modern Society is the third in a series of essay collections on Zen Buddhism as seen in the context of Western thought. Throughout his career, Masao Abe has articulated the meaning of Zen thought in a uniquely compelling way - at once, true to the original tradition and appropriately relevant to a variety of comparative standpoints, ranging from Biblical Judeo-Christianity to modern existentialism, phenomenology, and postmodernism. As a leading representative of the Kyoto School, which has sought a critical, comparative linking of Eastern and Western thought, Abe has based his approach on constructive, mutually respectful yet critical intellectual interaction and dialogue with some of the leading figures in the West (including Paul Tillich, Hans Kung, and Eugene Borowitz) as well as dozens of colleagues, students, and disciples. Together with the previous volumes, this work examines and exemplifies some key features of Kyoto School thought. While the essays presented here should be read in light of the socio-political criticism that has since been lodged against the Kyoto School and, more particularly, i

Book Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha

Download or read book Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha written by Daniel Ingram and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 715 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very idea that the teachings can be mastered will arouse controversy within Buddhist circles. Even so, Ingram insists that enlightenment is an attainable goal, once our fanciful notions of it are stripped away, and we have learned to use meditation as a method for examining reality rather than an opportunity to wallow in self-absorbed mind-noise. Ingram sets out concisely the difference between concentration-based and insight (vipassana) meditation; he provides example practices; and most importantly he presents detailed maps of the states of mind we are likely to encounter, and the stages we must negotiate as we move through clearly-defined cycles of insight. Its easy to feel overawed, at first, by Ingram's assurance and ease in the higher levels of consciousness, but consistently he writes as a down-to-earth and compassionate guide, and to the practitioner willing to commit themselves this is a glittering gift of a book.In this new edition of the bestselling book, the author rearranges, revises and expands upon the original material, as well as adding new sections that bring further clarity to his ideas.

Book Impermanence Is Buddha Nature

Download or read book Impermanence Is Buddha Nature written by Joan Stambaugh and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1990-06-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D?gen Zenji was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Ky?to, and the founder of the S?t? school of Zen in Japan after travelling to China and training under the Chinese Caodong lineage there. D?gen is known for his extensive writing including the Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma or Sh?b?genz?, a collection of ninety-five fascicles concerning Buddhist practice and enlightenment. The primary concept underlying D?gen's Zen practice is "oneness of practice-enlightenment". In fact, this concept is considered so fundamental to D?gen's variety of Zen-and, consequently, to the S?t? school as a whole-that it formed the basis for the work Shush?-gi, which was compiled in 1890 by Takiya Takush? of Eihei-ji and Azegami Baisen of S?ji-ji as an introductory and prescriptive abstract of D?gen's massive work, the Sh?b?genz? ("Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma"). Dogen is a profoundly original and difficult 13th century Buddhist thinker whose works have begun attracting increasing attention in the West. Admittedly difficult for even the most advanced and sophisticated scholar of Eastern thought, he is bound, initially, to present an almost insurmountable barrier to the Western mind. Yet the task of penetrating that barrier must be undertaken and, in fact, is being carried out by many gifted scholars toiling in the Dogen vineyard.

Book Shaping Formless Fire

Download or read book Shaping Formless Fire written by Stephen Mace and published by . This book was released on 2019-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magick depends upon no abstract philosophies, and doing it requires neither devotion to any god or demon nor knowledge of the True Keys of the Mysteries. Instead it is a technique for recognizing and manipulating psychic energy, both within the psyche and outside it, and for acquiring the mental skills we need to do this effectively. If the details of this technique can seem involved, well, the psyche is a complicated instrument, and psychic energy is slippery stuff to deal with. We must learn to manage it within our psyches and also to split it off so it can act independently to produce the "meaningful coincidences" we require. Magick is a psychic technology, a collection of observations about psychic energy and the techniques for manipulating it. Shaping Formless Fire presents these with a simple elegance that contradicts the notion that Magick must remain a hidden art. There is psychic energy with us and all around us. We use its power to make our worlds, and to master it is to learn how to make the worlds we require. To see it as merely the way we perceive the world is to put ourselves at its mercy, and forfeit its power.
