Book The Formation of Monothiocarbonates During the Reaction Between Xanthates and Sulphide Minerals in Flotation Systems

Download or read book The Formation of Monothiocarbonates During the Reaction Between Xanthates and Sulphide Minerals in Flotation Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reactions between galena, pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcocite and a number of xanthate homologues have been studied. It has been shown that both galena and pyrite from a soluble product, the appropriate monothiocarbonate, as well as the characteristic adsorbed products. With galena and ethyl xanthate in the presence of excess oxygen, all the adsorbed xanthate returns to the solution in the form of monothiocarbonate, whereas ethyl xanthate adsorbed at a pyrite surface cannot be removed in this manner. In reactions between these two minerals and the higher xanthate homologues, the amount and rate of formation of soluble monothiocarbonate are much less than those observed with ethyl xanthate. It is suggested that the formation of monothiocarbonate takes place via mixed metal hydroxy-xanthate species adsorbed at the surface and not from adsorbed dixanthogen. Soluble monothiocarbonate is not formed during reactions between chalcocite and sphalerite and xanthate solutions. The former result is in harmony with the postulated mechanism, the latter apparently not. The adsorption of monothiocarbonate at the surfaces of the minerals, both in the presence and absence of xanthate is considered, and it is concluded that the adsorption of monothiocarbonates is much weaker than that of the corresponding xanthates.

Book Interactions Between Sulphide Minerals and Xanthates 1 The Formation of Monothiocarbonate at Galena and Pyrite Surfaces

This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of decomposition of potassium ethyl monothiocarbonate has been determined at pH values between 5 and 10, and its molar absorptivity at 221 nm determined to be 1.24x10000 mol/cm. A novel apparatus for use in the study of reactions between sulphide minerals, oxygen and thiol reagents has been developed, and applied to the reactions of potassium ethyl xanthate with galena and pyrite. It has been shown that both minerals react with ethyl xanthate in the presence of oxygen or oxidation products to form soluble as well as adsorbed xanthate derivatives. The soluble derivative has been identified to be ethyl monothiocarbonate. The adsorbed xanthate at a galena surface, unlike that at a pyrite surface, is gradually converted to a soluble monothiocarbonate under the action of dissolved oxygen. The effect of variables such as pH, the initial xanthate and oxygen concentrations, and the initial state of oxidation of the mineral on the formation of monothiocarbonate has been studied. It is tentatively proposed that an intermediate adsorbed mixed xanthate-hydroxide species is involved in the formation of monothiocarbonate at both galena and pyrite surfaces. The significance of the formation of monothiocarbonate to flotation practice is discussed briefly. The formation of monothiocarbonate represents a wastage of reagent, and could lead to a decrease in flotability of xanthated galena with time of exposure to aerated solutions. (AUAB).

Book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation

Download or read book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation written by S. Ramachandra Rao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th The technology of froth flotation, invented in the early 20 century was first used for the concentration of sulfide minerals. Since then it has been applied for the processing of many nonsulfide ores as weIl, including oxides, carbonates, silicates, soluble minerals like halite and sylvite and energy minerals like coal and bitumen. In recent years it has been used for several nonrnineral applications, such as waste water treatment, deinking of paper for recycling and resource recovery from industrial wastes he technology continues to grow with new applications reported every year. Flotation is based on chemical phenomena occurring at the interfaces, solid/water and air/water. Surface Chemistry principles have played a significant role in the development of flotation technology. Knowledge of aqueous solution chemistry and electrochemistry has added to our understanding of the reactions in flotation systems. Professor Jan Leja's book has weIl served researchers and students as they tried to understand the chemistry of flotation, and it is a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge. However, since the book was first published, new research techniques and ever growing information have made an update necessary. The revised edition compiled by Dr. S. R. Rao has brought together fundamental aspects of the chemistry of flotation and how they apply to practical systems. It should serve all who are working in the area of flotation and interested in exploring new applications of flotation technology.

Download or read book A Determination of the Products of Reaction Between Various Sulphide Minerals and Aqueous Xanthate Solution and a Correlation of the Products with Electrode Rest Potentials written by and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surface reaction products formed when sulphide minerals react with xanthates were analyzed by spectrophotometric methods. These products were found to be predominantly either metal xanthate or dixanthogen, depending on the particular sulphide mineral. Dixanthogen is formed on those minerals that, in a solution of xanthate, assume a rest potential greater than the equilibrium potential for the reduction of dixanthogen or xanthate.

Book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation

Download or read book Surface Chemistry of Froth Flotation written by Jan Leja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of froth flotation is an outstanding example of applied surface chemistry. It is extensively used in the mining, mineral, metallurgical, and chemical industries for separation and selective concentration of individual minerals and other solids. Substances so concentrated serve as raw materials for producing appropriate metals and chemicals. The importance of flotation in technology is chiefly due to the ease with which it can be made selective and versatile and to the economy of the process. The objective of this book is to review the fundamentals of surface chemistry together with the relevant aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry that-in the opinion of the author-are important ~ control of the froth flotation process. The review updates the information that had been available in books by Sutherland and Wark (1955), Gaudin (1957), Klassen and Mokrousov (1963), and GIembotsky et al. (1963). It emphasizes mainly the surface chemical aspects of the process, leaving other relevant topics such as hydrodynamics, mechanical and electrical technology, cir cuit design and engineering, operations research, instrumentation tech nology, modeling, etc., to appropriate specialized treatments.
