Book The Forgiveness Factor Anthology

Download or read book The Forgiveness Factor Anthology written by Margery Warder and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unwillingness to forgive can destroy us, rob us of joy and peace, and it can dismantle our relationships. True forgiveness, by its nature, forces us to sign an unspoken contract about an offense that tried to alter our world. Sometimes we forgivers move forward in humility because it's our turn to ask someone we've offended to forgive us, to restore us to the relationship we both hoped for as our friendship, marriage, or work relationship began developing. We eventually feel good about a cleared conscience. And then there are the big ones, those "I-don't-think-I-could-ever-forgive" situations. Some contributors in this anthology struggled to forgive abusers and even killers. When they finally were able to do that, they were rewarded. Following most accounts, thoughts and questions are included to help a reader or discussion group personalize what was just read. A basic truth that anchored most contributors is that because we have been forgiven much, we can forgive. This is Margery Kisby Warder's second anthology. The first, Celebrating Christmas, had forty contributors who found writing about Christmas help fulfill more of their dreams about getting published. However, writing about forgiveness required authors to dig deeper because each account had to be lifted from a real life experience. Transitions have been included between the entries, and the readers may skip around to find situations particularly helpful to them. Suitable for private reading or group discussion, the contributors hope their experiences will help others deal with whatever tough situations they encounter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For psychologists and psychotherapists, the notion of forgiveness has been enjoying a substantial vogue. For their patients, it holds the promise of "moving on" and healing emotional wounds. The forgiveness of others - and of one's self - would seem to offer the kind of peace that psychotherapy alone has never been able to provide. In this volume, psychologist Sharon Lamb and philosopher Jeffrie Murphy argue that forgiveness has been accepted as a therapeutic strategy without serious, critical examination. They intend this volume to be a closer, critical look at some of these questions: why is forgiveness so popular now? What exactly does it entail? When might it be appropriate for a therapist not to advise forgiveness? When is forgiveness in fact harmful? Lamb and Murphy have collected many previously-unpublished chapters by both philosophers and psychologists that examine what is at stake for those who are injured, those who injure them, and society in general when such a practice becomes commonplace. Some chapters offer cautionary tales about forgiveness therapy, while others paint complex portraits of the social, cultural, and philosophical factors that come into play with forgiveness. The value of this volume lies not only in its presentation of a nuanced view of this therapeutic trend, but also as a general critique of psychotherapy, and as a valuable testimony of the theoretical and practical possibilities in an interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophy and clinical psychology.

Book excerpt: Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Chair of The Elders, and Chair of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, along with his daughter, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, offer a manual on the art of forgiveness—helping us to realize that we are all capable of healing and transformation. Tutu's role as the Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission taught him much about forgiveness. If you asked anyone what they thought was going to happen to South Africa after apartheid, almost universally it was predicted that the country would be devastated by a comprehensive bloodbath. Yet, instead of revenge and retribution, this new nation chose to tread the difficult path of confession, forgiveness, and reconciliation. Each of us has a deep need to forgive and to be forgiven. After much reflection on the process of forgiveness, Tutu has seen that there are four important steps to healing: Admitting the wrong and acknowledging the harm; Telling one's story and witnessing the anguish; Asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness; and renewing or releasing the relationship. Forgiveness is hard work. Sometimes it even feels like an impossible task. But it is only through walking this fourfold path that Tutu says we can free ourselves of the endless and unyielding cycle of pain and retribution. The Book of Forgiving is both a touchstone and a tool, offering Tutu's wise advice and showing the way to experience forgiveness. Ultimately, forgiving is the only means we have to heal ourselves and our aching world.

Book excerpt: A fascinating book about our struggle to forgive—and how we can—from a renowned psychologist and award-winning author. Why do we harden our hearts, even against those we want to love? Why do we find it so hard to admit being wrong? Why are the worst grudges the ones we hold against ourselves? When we nurse our resentments, Robert Karen says, we are acting from an insecure aspect of the self that harbors unresolved pain from childhood. But we also have a forgiving self which is not compliant or fake, but rather the strongest, most loving part of who we are. Through it, we are able to voice anger without doing damage, to acknowledge our own part in what has gone wrong, to see the flaws in ourselves and others as part of our humanity. Using movies, people in the news, and sessions from his practice, Karan illuminate how we can move beyond our feelings of being wronged without betraying our legitimate anger and need for repair. The forgiving self, when we are able to locate it, brings relief from compulsive self-hatred and bitterness, and allows for a re-emergence of love.

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Forgiveness written by Eugene L. Olsen and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people view forgiveness is a pivotal process in avoiding unnecessary conflict and our ability to maintain valued relationships. The chapters in this book explore a range of cognitive and social factors that are purported to contribute to forgiveness and which ultimately influence one's memory for the offending incidents; the relationship between forgiveness and psychological and physical health; forgiveness in parent-child relationships; forgiveness between people who act as parents and carry out their parental role and forgiveness between couples and in intimate relationships; the act of forgiveness and reconciliation in war survivors; research on people's disposition to forgive the self when they have done harm to another person (intrapersonal or self-forgiveness) as well as the victim's response to the wrongdoing, and the relationship between the offender and the victim in the self-forgiveness process. In the final chapter, the psychological process of forgiveness is questioned, and forgiveness as both a psychological capability and normalitive ideal is examined. The author argues that any sense of forgiveness as a moral relationship (and achievement) between two people is lost in a world in which ideally, the psychology and morality of forgiveness reinforce each other at times, and conversely, are at times in conflict.

Book Forgiveness and Retribution

Download or read book Forgiveness and Retribution written by Margaret R. Holmgren and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgiveness and Retribution: Responding to Wrongdoing argues that ultimately, forgiveness is always the appropriate response to wrongdoing. In recent decades, many philosophers have claimed that unless certain conditions are met, we should resent those who have wronged us personally and that criminal offenders deserve to be punished. Conversely, Margaret Holmgren posits that we should forgive those who have ill-treated us, but only after working through a process of addressing the wrong. Holmgren then reflects on the kinds of laws and social practices a properly forgiving society would adopt.
